“Unlike anything I have experienced before!”
Reviewed 31 July 2014

The tidal bore rafting tour from Shubenacadie River Adventure Tours was unlike anything I have ever experienced (in a great way). I visited on a July 2014 weekend. I went with my fiancee and her family (6 total). We were put in our own boat with Cam as our guide. Cam was fantastic! (as was all of the staff). The staff were friendly, courteous, and efficient. We were on our way shortly after arriving, getting suited up, and hearing the safety protocol. Cam did a great job navigating the waters, being attentive to our group, and maximizing the fun and adventure. The tour is perfectly spaced out. You hit some tides, you take a break and get a drink, you go back on the water, hit more tides, go play in the mud and do some mud slides, and then do some more tides and swim. Afterwards, they have a great BBQ with hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, soda, etc... There is also the opportunity to shower off. We watched the video of tidal bore rafting beforehand, but nothing can really prepare you for the awesome experience that is the Shubie River tides. And thankfully we had Cam and the rest of the staff to make it an incredible experience.

“Awesome as always!”
Reviewed 28 June 2014

This was the third year we've gone tidal bore rafting with Shubenacadie Adventure Tours, and for the third year we've had an AWESOME time!

Our son is eight now, we went for the first time when he was six and we were hooked. DS is a great swimmer, but you don't have to be a swimmer to enjoy this, my DH doesn't swim at all and still has a great time.

You can do a three hour tour or just do half and get 90 minutes for a slightly discounted price. We've only done the 90 minute version of 'White Water Tango' which is the middle of the road as far as tide height/waves go. We're up for, "The Ultimate," but it all depends on the date you're going and the tide on that date, it's just never worked out to hit that one yet.

This time around we had Garret piloting our boat, a very friendly new guide and he was great. We saw about seven eagles, several eagle nests, caught some fabulous waves, went for a swim in the middle of the river. For DS, one of the highlights of the second half of the tour is the mudsliding. They park the boat on a muddy riverbank, you take off your shoes and life jacket and climb up the bank, slide down the squishy warm mud into the river.

Mudsliding is REALLY fun, not only for kids, but take into account that the slippery brown clay will stain, so don't wear anything you care about. Even if you don't go mudsliding, the water is brown and muddy, you're going to get wet and you're going to get dirty.

You really can't bring anything with you on the boat that's not attached to you, there's no place to put it, and keep in mind anything and everything on the boat is going to get wet. There's a bowl for everyone's car keys at the 'Main Lodge' (for lack of another word). Anything you wear has to stay on, they can't risk items going into the river and getting caught in a propeller. Wear old sneakers or water shoes, something that will stay on your feet (no Crocs or flipflops), but choose something you don't mind getting muddy or wet. We normally keep a pair of sneakers that have worn out during the year and are no longer suitable for walking/running, but they work fine for this. They will supply boots if you don't have the right stuff, but they look like more of a PITA as they just fill up with water. They have rain gear too, but I've never seen the point. You're not there to stay dry, all that it might do is keep the wind off so you don't get chilly. Today it was 28 degrees celcius on land, far more comfortable out on the water, at times a bit cool.

If you're scared of water or don't want to get your hair wet, this activity is probably not for you. But if you're OK with muddy water splashing up in your face, a zodiac filling up with water, and the boat flying into the air a bit, you really must go! For the most splash action, sit in front!

After you return, they barbeque burgers and hot dogs served with pop and chips, veggie burgers are available too but you need to request them when you make your reservation. Eat all you want. Nothing fancy, but after 90 minutes on the water you're hungry and it fills the void. They also sell disposable waterproof cameras for $20, you can probably get them for less elsewhere, but they do fine, we bought one last year. Developing actual film is getting trickier these days, but we found the cheapest option was going to Walmart and having them put the pics on a CD, then you can print what you want.

Bring sunscreen, bug spray (only needed at the lodge, on the water it's too breezy for bugs), a swimsuit for the pool if you want to take a swim before the tour, a towel, old clothes/shoes and a camera of some sort that is totally waterproof and has a strap to keep it on your wrist. Same goes for a hat if you wear one, needs something to keep it on your head!

“Peter is wild!!”
Reviewed 15 August 2013 via mobile

Peter was an amazing guide! Very experienced, told us interesting stories and facts, and pointed out different birds, but more importantly, took us on an unbelievable ride. He hit more waves than any other boat out there--didn't waste any of the time out on the water--and kept circling around to get just one more wave. Super exciting, yet felt safe at all times (he would call out instructions when it was necessary to keep the boat in balance). Mud sliding was awesome! Remember to wear dark old clothes because they get stained with red silt. Hot showers and bbq waiting for us at the end.
