“Not Suitable For Family Weekends”
Reviewed 15 September 2013

Missenden Abbey is a conference centre. As such, the majority of the rooms are cubicles for single delegates staying overnight while attending a conference. The rooms are too small for a couple to stay in for a comfortable weekend break. Beds are three quarter doubles. We also found the room and corridors quite scruffy with marks on walls and scratched doorplates.
We were attending a wedding and asked why we had been put into a single room. We were told that this was a standard double room and no other rooms were available.
Most of those attending the wedding felt the rooms were too small. Those with children were given blow up airbeds to put at the foot of their bed. Guests had to ask for extra towels, pillows, etc.
Though the centre is pleasant enough, the food good and the building is set in attractive grounds, we felt we should warm others who may be considering booking the venue for a wedding event with guests staying over.

Rooms are small, basic and clean. Wifi is hit and miss and the showers are rubbish.
The hotel and grounds are beautiful.
Breakfast is good.

Great building. Great location. Efficient and reasonably priced. But...bed was probably reused, if not laundry and making awful. Door to communal garden from room shouldn't have been left open. Bin should've been emptied & visible rubbish under bed removed. Shower and sink probably shouldn't have been covered in gel and toothpaste either. Ordered paper never appeared. Stayed at worse but should be better.

My husband and I got married at the Abbey at the beginning of May 2013. Form the moment we booked the abbey, the service that we received was second to none. We were able to visit the venue on numerous occasions leading up to the big day and met with our wedding planner Louise regularly to discuss all our plans/ideas. Louise was very professional, friendly and extremely helpful, she ensured that our day ran smoothly and she was with us for the whole day and evening.

All our guests have told us since what an amazing venue the Abbey is and how well looked after they felt by all the staff. The grounds are stunning and idea for wedding pictures and all our guests were able to walk around or just sit and relax.

The food was amazing with generous portion sizes and everyone was very impressed with their breakfast in the morning.

Everyone we encountered who works at the Abbey were all very friendly, polite and helpful and they made us and our guests feel completely comfortable and 'at home'.

We would recommend this venue 100% for anyone looking for a place to get married. You won't be disappointed.

The location of this historic building with its modern hotel and conference facilities is very hard to match in the English countryside. Fire gutted the property some years ago and the restoration is excellent. There are grounds for a stroll, the Chiltern scarp is only 15 minutes drive and if you dont drive the railway station is an easy walk for the able bodied. The main street, London Road, is mainly ancient and fascinating with thriving businesses. To finish of well; the staff are helpful, relaxed freindly but professional. I really enjoyed my nights there.

Room Tip: I stayed in the old main building that; on discussion with colleagues, may have been slightly bigger...

Booked for 3 nights for a wedding, beautiful building and grounds, however the rooms in the separate accommodation block are tiny and the supposed 'double bed' was only a 3/4. The shower didn't work properly and the bathroom radiator was stuck on full, apparently the case in all of the rooms, which meant the whole bedroom was ridiculously hot even though we had the windows open all day and night. The breakfast was fine and the staff are friendly however after 2 sleepless nights we decided to drive home even though we still had to pay £70 for the 3rd night as we just couldn't face another cramped night in the room. The wedding day itself was lovely and the staff were great but we should have booked accommodation at one of the local pub/hotels I think which are within easy walking distance. We didn't see the bedrooms in the main abbey building I assume these are of a better standard. The hotel should state that it's double rooms are not actually suitable for 2 people to stay, I suppose as a conference venue they are ideal for single attendees, but not for wedding guests which is a real shame as it took the shine off the venue.

Room Tip: All the rooms we saw in the separate accommodation block were tiny with a very small bed, I don'...
