“Luxury in Lagrasse”

Stayed here at Easter. Lovely to be welcomed in English by our host, Guy. Immediately took us on a fascinating tour of this beautifully restored building and pointed out all local amenities. Accommodation was considerably more luxurious than the gites we had previously stayed at in France. Nice not to have to take bed linen and towels which take up lots of room. Spotlessly clean and every modern appliance provided-boys enjoyed English TV. Kitchen very well eqipped for preparation of evening meals-a bonus if on a budget. Beds weere comfy and large living area for relaxing in for all four of us. 2 fantastic showers whichwas a bonus with 2 teenage boys.
Village is lovely, timeless beauty but with modern necessities such as bakery, restaurants, post office and mini supermarket.
Ideally situated for many day trips. Carcassonne was beautiful-recommend to pay to enter castle. Narbonne indoor market was a real sensory experience, underground Roman warehouse(horreum) was fascinating. Sigean wildlife park was a hit for all the family-amazing being able to drive so close to lions, rhinos, giraffes etc-well worth the money. Recommend getting there early and taking a picnic, lovely picnic site within park. Peyrepertuse was truly astonishing! Drive up to it was corkscrew and we when we eventuallly clambered to top it was literally a breathtaking experience.
Would certainly recommend this lovely apartment as great base to explore this fascinating area.

“lovely apartment but lacked special touches”
Reviewed 15 October 2011 for a stay in October 2011

The conversion of this old house into three apartments has been done very well and looks great.
We had a perfectly comfortable time but unlike many other places the apartment lacked any of those special touches that stay with you after you've left. There was nothing in the fridge where some milk, bread and a bottle of wine on a Sunday evening would have been thoughtful. There was a minimum of loo paper, not enough for the week. No shampoos/soap etc in the shower room. None of these things are expected but they make such a difference.
Also make sure you read the small print because unlike most places we've stayed electricity costs were deducted from our security deposit. We were told that the reading left on the table on arrival was only to check fair usage so didn't bother to double check it. We only cooked in one night and hardly used any electricity but still had 13 Euros knocked off. It's not a huge amount of money - but it feels a bit mean.
Overall it's a shame because it's a lovely house and the caretaker/owners's friend was perfectly sociable - there was just a lack of thoughtfulness which would have really transformed it.
