When i stayed at the Portcullis Hotel i really enjoyed the food. It was a good price, for what you get! The staff that work there were really welcoming and helpful. The bar was tidy, and the hotel room was spotless. When i went up to my room it felt homely, the bed was made, it was all clean. The room is newly furnished. I was told before staying here that it is a very lively pub in the evening (thursday, friday and saturday), this was till 2am with loud music. This did not bother me as i stayed downstairs partying with everyone. I think the portcullis was a really good and happy pub/ hotel to stay in and would love to stay there again! I would recommend staying there!

Myself and my wife stayed at the Portcullis in August 2012.
The room was newly furnished and very clean. It had en suite, which consisted of a toilet, sink and a wet room style shower. The en suite was very small but the shower area was plentiful.
Be warned, the Portcullis is a very lively pub and at weekends is open til 2am with very loud music. But you are given warning to this on the web site and on arrival so I'm not going to knock down the rating as it was as expected. We didn't get back to our room til after 1am so had very little disturbance. For £45 we found this an excellent place to stay and definitely would stay here again.

After watching the four rooms show on channel 4 we thought it would be fun to stay here for the weekend, We arrived to find its not clear where you check in , no reception but spoke to a member of bar staff and we got sorted quite quickly. After checking into our rooms we found ourselves at the bar talking to a number of locals which were good company and friendly, funny enough the topic of conversation was the Landlady Jenna and her Mother which were on the Channel 4 Four Rooms show. I asked a few general questions to find out that it is actually Jenna and her partner louis which run the pub, One of the locals pointed Louis And Jenna out i was amazed as i thought it must of been Father and daughter anyhow to the point staff friendly, food was acceptable, I didn't agree with the increase in price of alcohol after a certain time late evening 22.30 i think it was so we decided to try another pub, after roaming around for 30 mins or so we decided we had enough and were ready to retire for the evening but to be greeted by a big doorman to be told no one else was allowed in after 23.00, i explained we were staying in the hotel but had forgot our key, he was quite rude and to the point saying they were not letting anyone in. I telephoned the pub in which resulted another doorman ushering us in. Went to bed (Not Very Comfertable) finally got to sleep at 3.30am after all the loud shouting music etc, went for breakfast to find no cereal cold toast and best of all no jam. I won't be staying here again!!!

On arrival, it's not clear where you check into this hotel as there is no actual reception area. WE were directed to the bar where we paid the balance of our booking, and were shown up to our room. Chipping Sodbury is a lovely town, we had a lovely walk around the around a great meal out at the local Thai restaurant. Arrived back at the "hotel" - where it felt like a completely different place - it was very busy - which is great to see in this day and age - pubs don't thrive any more! We stayed and enjoyed a few drinks and eventually retired, but had been warned that this night was "quiet!" - and that "Tomorrow night will be twice as busy".... this rang alarm bells! We had been warned about the noise, so when we went back up to the room I was interested to see, or hear, what the noise level was like from our room. We were put into Room 10 which is right above the smoking area. The noise of people enjoying themselves outside was actually louder than the music itself but I guess this was due to very thin windows. The room itself was spotlessly clean and very modern looking, but very small. We were both quite tired and had had quite a bit to drink so actually slept quite well - but it wasn't the noise in the evening which bothered us. At approx 7am, the noise of moving barrels from/to the cellar was unreal! Loud bangs and crashes!! This went on for about an hour, it ended, I tried to get more sleep but then the crashing noise of empty glass bottles started for another hour or so. We were warned that the hotel was also a busy noisy pub but we were not warned about the noisy early start!! We slept in later than unusual due to quite a disrupted night's sleep - I was ill during the night but this was through no fault of the Portcullis. Thinking that Saturday night would be even louder, we decided to check out early. Thankfully we were given our money back, we did have to put up quite a good argument for it but I think that was fair enough as they had no notice of our early departure. Overall, I would say that this place should be a hotel or a pub/club. Not both.

We had a great nights sleep in a comfortable bed and a good shower in the morning. Christine and Jenna were welcoming hosts and looked after us really well. We enjoyed an exceptionally tasty and good value carvery in the evening and a delicious breakfast with good coffee in the morning. The music does go on until late but we stayed up and enjoyed it, lying in bed later than usual and having breakfast just before 10.

Room Tip: Room 11 is furthest from the lively bar and therefore quieter
