“The Spicers Review”
Reviewed 9 August 2014

We stayed at this hotel last Sept and Oct 2013 and it was a must that we stayed again in July 2014.
It is a pleasure to stay here as owners and staff are friendly, efficient and helpful. The rooms are spacious, clean and very comfortable. Its also nice to meet and chat with the locals. Breakfast is across the road (which is not a problem) and just perfect. The cost is reasonable and in keeping with the quality of this establishment and locality. We will definitely stay here again and have no hesitation in giving it our full recommendation.

Haven't been here for a few years as this long established venue had become tired.
Was in for a surprise as seems to have changed hands. The car park was almost full and upon entry found the place was full with families, walkers and locals.
The greeting was very warm with excellent bar staff attending very quickly and in a most friendly fashion.
We both had the sweet and sour chicken which was excellent. The specials looked very inviting.
Overall good value although £4.20 for a Stella was a bit eye watering.
The memsahib was very complimentary re the food and this is indeed a very rare thing!!
Will definitely return - good venue.

After a long hot day of walking, this place was terrific. Very friendly and helpful young man behind the bar. The room was very large and very clean. Obviously staff who care about their place. There had been an issue with the online booking company and the wrong reservation date but this problem was smoothly and easily handled by Joan. No problem at all. The food was great, the locals were friendly...I hated to leave.

Took a drive out to Castle Coombe where we were going to eat lunch, but if you know CC you know it is not the best place for parking! Decided to eat at a nice country pub on our way back to Bristol. Chanced upon The Dog(have never visited before). Glad we did,it is much better looking inside than out,a real old pub, very pretty. The three of us all had differant meals and found the food to be very good(only complaint,we were only given one pat of butter each) The crusty bread was a nice touch. It was at lunch time mid-week,so we didn't have to wait overly long. We all said we would be very happy to eat there again. And as we live in Bristol we will!

Room Tip: Only ate here

We went to this pub for a drink and although it was running late was offered a meal. We declined having already eaten but was so impressed by the service and ambience of the pub that we returned a couple of nights later.

Although a completely different set of staff on duty - the service and friendliness was the same - excellent.

As was the food. My wife took the Steak and Kidney Pie (which came with a complimentary soup dish starter incidentally), and she loved her meal, whilst I have finally found the ONLY pub to ever serve Cockles as a starter, despite it being one of the more inland pubs.

In fact if you are a lover of fish dishes then this is definitely the pub for you. They have loads on the menu and apparently a friendly Cornish fisherman delivers freshly caught supplies 3 times a week.

The lager and house wine (several choices) were "average" in price but well kept and good in taste.
Interestingly they have a number of historical documents about the pub and the surrounding area that are available to the customer to read.

Definitely a pub I would return to to eat if I were in the area.

Downside - probably only the Wi-FI which was almost non-existent and even 3G seems difficult to raise in this particular area. I suppose this is an upside if you want to get your partner off the phone!!!!

This pub is great, very well coming and warm atmosphere on arriving, soaked from 'the Cotswold way' walk, lovely landlady and helpful and charming barman, good pub food and the rooms comfortable and warm and a nice bed - and very quiet.

Broke our journey from the Midlands to Hampshire late on a Sunday afternoon to sample the food as I had been impressed by the on-line menu. Was glad we had. We received a warm and friendly welcome and the food was delightful. Being a Sunday, we stuck to rather traditional roasts but on our next visit will hit the fish specials. Great value, good portions, promptly served: what more can you ask for? Well kept ales of course! And they were here. Good job the wife agreed to drive the rest of the way.
