The very best way to see the real Africa. We were looked after from the moment we reached the reserve until we left. Sleeping in comfortable tents in the bush meant we were close to nature from the outset, hardly roughing it as there was running water and hot showers. The rangers who took us on drives, knew where the animals were and told us all we wanted to know and more. This was our first visit and exceeded our expectations. We had the whole deal of life in the bush, the sky at night full of stars and on our last evening there was a huge thunder storm. Hard to leave and return to the other world.

We had an amazing time at Quatermain's Camp! From the minute we arrived (or, even prior) we felt so welcome! Beautiful surroundings, and the feeling and atmosphere at the camp is so relaxed - we stayed for two nights, but if I would do it again I would stay longer! The game drives were of course the highlight, and the duration longer than we expected (big plus!). We got to get really up close to the animals, unfortunately we had some rain, so the road in Shamwari to the leopard "hang out" was closed, but apart from that the rain didn't bother us much - and don't worry, they offer cozy ponchos :) Great feeling to sleep in a tent, with all the noises and "wild" around, and still be able to take a warm shower - truly "glamping" :) I could just go on with the superlatives - but what really made Quatermaines stand out is the atmosphere and the crew! I mean - every Camp/Lodge would surely offer great game drives, but the genuine feel, the hospitality and personal touch is hard to find - but Julie & Riaan has managed to offer just that!

This was our first safari experience and it was absolutely incredible! What an experience! It completely exceeded our expectations which were high to begin with. This is probably as close as you can get to the real, authentic safari experience and as long as you are not looking for super-duper luxury you will absolutley love staying here - from beginning to end. It is a camp rather than a lodge but that`s what makes it so special, authentic and fun. However, there are still lots of home comforts and it`s definitely more glamping than camping.

You can expect:
•A lovely warm welcome and a super bunch of people - the owners, Riaan, Julie and their gorgeous little boy, Sam and the rangers, Craig, Duane and Blake are all lovely
•A maximum of 4 other guests (3 tents in total) and a very cosy and intimate atmosphere - you all eat and drink together around the same table / camp fire
•A truely personal touch with all meals hosted and eaten with either one of the owners or rangers
•Drives on both the Amakhala and Shamwari game reserves (plus a bush walk) - unique to Quatermain`s and giving you 2 quite different experiences / terraines and more liklehood of seeing different animals
•Sightings of LOADS of different animals including lions, cheetahs, zebras, elephants, rhinos etc etc. I lost count in the end but we came away more than satisfied. The rangers really know their stuff and go the extra mile to get the sightings and get up close. Something we were unaware of before we went is that both reserves operate a strict policy of only 2 vehicles at each sighting at any one time so your experience and photos are not runined by loads of other people. This is not the case at some other reserves or national parks
•Comfortable and cosy tents with great en suite bathrooms. Honestly, the showers are excellent and piping hot. Just so you know, their are 2 twin and 1 double tent. Ask at time of booking if you have a preference. We had the double and it was perfect.
•More cosiness due to the lack of electricity. Light in the evenings is by candles, oil lanterns, fire light and the occasssional torch. You might want to take an extra torch - useful to to e.g. leave in the bathroom if you get up in the night
•Delicious home cooked food (and lots of it) as well as very free flowing, not expensive drinks. The sundowners and snacks on the evening drive are a lovely touch and give you the opportunity to really drink in the beauty of your surroundings and in our case digest the drama of having just witnessed a lioness hunting a zebra and a zebra stallion chase 2 cheetah brothers off their patch!
•To be knackered from the early starts for the morning drives and loads of excitement and adrenalin. You will appreciate the free time in the afternoons for a snooze or a glass of vino on your deck outside your tent and the lovely relaxed atmosphere around the fire in the evenings to unwind.

All in all, this was most definitely one of the big highlights of our 3 week holiday in South Africa and Zanzibar. The only issue is that I think we might have started at the top and no other safari experience will measure up. Oh well, we will just have to go back again!!

What can one say? Perfect is an understatement. The best, friendliest, warmest hospitality in South Africa. Just wonderful. I don't have adjectives to describe it! Take a step out of your hum drum rat race and relax in a little piece of paradise.

Like written before, can only repeat it word by word... :) This was THE PERFECT safari experience, could not image to have a better way to do this. This was our first time, but I do not want to do safari any other way in the future.
The camp is way beyond expectations: amazing settings, lovely ambiance, great, knowledgeable and friendly staff, super guides, good food: we are so grateful that we were - if only for a day - a part of this. With the two reserves combined in one stay, we had the chance to see almost all the big names, and the animals we did not meet this time only give us the good reason to once return for more!! :)
Btw, that shower... the best I've ever had. :)
Thank you for everything.
Tip to fellow travelers: try to stay more than one night, it was so painful to leave after only 1 day!

Room Tip: Go for the double bed tent, aka honeymoon suite. You'll see why. :)
