Quatermains 1920s Safari Camp
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 8 August 2014

My friend and I stayed at Quatermains camp for 2 nights at the end of our trip along the Gardenroute. What a final, we absolutely saved the best for last !! Hosts Riaan & Julie are a wonderful and kind couple. They and their staff are real passionate about the wildlife and great hosts. The accommodation is well considered and brings you back to the early 20's with the comfort of 21th century. The beds aren't that comfi but that's a minor detail and overruled 200% by the complete experience.
The safari's were exciting. The wine and cheese at sunset, loved it!! The braai... can't eat that much meat ;-), breakfast with the family, felt like we're part of one big family. A bit of a bummer was the bushwalk which was more a kind of walk to nowhere. The ranger who took us had probably his off-day with us. But we had fun, and that's the most important. The other ranger who did most of our safari's was more than excellent, felt like he had a personal connection with the wildlife.
Oh, and lets not forget Tumi, everymans friend on 4 feet, especially if you play with him and trow his ball into the bush.

This game camp is amazing in so many ways. When you arrive, the tents are perfect replicas of 1920s safari camps. The furniture and decorations look like something out of a movie set. You are truly transported back in time. There is no electricity, so all of the lighting is by lantern which adds to the ambience. The only compromise to old time safari camps is running water! So you have flush toilets, sinks and showers with hot water. To show the detail in the camp, the shower heads are attached to buckets, like an old time water bucket shower.
The game drives take place on both Amakala and Shamwari game reserves, two of the top game reserves along the Garden Route or Eastern Cape. I would be willing to say that when the two reserves are combined, as Quatermain's Camp does, into one extended reserve it is far above the rest. We had amazing sightings of Lions, Cheetas, and even a baby rhino. There were a number of antelope here that we had not seen before elsewhere in SA.
But the best part of Qurtermain's Camp is the staff. Without great staff the experience at game lodges is never as good. Craig and Dwayne were amazing as the guides, game rangers. They take turns with the game drives and work hard to please. I especially liked the fact that they would stay at sightings until we wanted to leave, there was no push to move on and no schedule that had to be kept to the letter. Each night one of the rangers hosted dinner and spent time taking and sharing stories. Sam was the cook and her food was superb! We understand that Sam had been hired to upgrade the menu and from what we experienced she had done just that! Her breads made on the grill were a work of art.

My boyfriend and I stayed here the first three days of our SA trip, a better beginning of our holidays was just impossible. We instantly had a good feeling with the ranger who picked us up at the gate: Craig. A wonderfull guy with a great passion for the bush and the wildlife. He made our stay priceless with very exciting game drives, lovely food (with the only proper SA braai we had), great service and just his overall charming company.
The tent is comfortable, with our own shower and toilet, just perfect and we lost our city-rush (aka stress) within the first hour there. We were lucky enough to be the only guests at the time, and it felt so cosy and natural to spend time with our great ranger Craig and ofcourse the lovely owners Riaan and July. Sitting around the campfire with Craig and Riaan felt like having drinks with good friends, an absolute joy. We could do that every night. Riaan took us on a bushwalk, which we enjoyed very much. He explained the local nature, flora and fauna in a very exciting way, we loved it!
The game drives were just fantastic, the Shamwari reserve is beautiful and full of wildlife. But we also enjoyed Amakhala very much. Such a treat to experience both grounds.
Well, I have nothing else to say but: I'll be back!!

My husband and I spent three days at Quatermain's in June. It was the best part of our three week trip to SA.

We didn't want an ostentatious 5* experience - we wanted the real deal, and we got it at Quatemains. It's the bush with comfort - comfy tent with private outdoor bathroom and warm shower, and delicious meals cooked over the fire (cheese bread!). Oh and wine. Delicious wine.

It's an amazing setting, but the real magic of this place is the people. Sharing meals and campfires with the staff allowed us to get to know this group of amazing, interesting people - "arrive as guests leave as friends".

This was my first time on safari, I knew I'd enjoy it but had no idea how much. I credit Duane and Craig, they were amazing guides - extremely knowledgable, charming and entertaining and very professional - we always felt safe. But above all, just lovely people. They would get as excited about sightings as us first-timers; it's inspiring to be around people who are so passionate about their work. Sighting hi lights for me included a baby rhino, lions, cheetahs, and having morning coffee in the shadow of a 'tower' of giraffes.

All of this makes me recommend Quatermain's without reservation - add the access to do game drives in Shamwari and it's a no brainer.

I'll be back - likely on my way to a safari guide course! (What can I say, it's infectious).

We stayed two nights at quatermains camp and it was one of the highlights of our honeymoon.
We had a big tent with al the comfort you can get: a flushed toilet, warm shower, a nice bed and hot jugs! And above all: very nice dinners with the friendly staf. The hospitality of Duane, Ryaan and Julie is a big plus. We had wonderfull game drives with Duane and learned a lot about the wildlife. In one word: FANTASTIC

Quatermain's Camp is one of my best travel experiences ever! The owners Riaan and Julie are extremely lovely! Booking directly with Julie was a seamless process and Riaan is not only an energetic quide he also has great stories to tell over a drink by the fire after safari. We were lucky enough to also have Duane as a guide, he is awesome! He is so extremely lovely, and his stoke and passion for nature is contagious making for a super fun safari and camp experience! Get to Quatermain's Camp, I can't recommend it enough!
