“Once in a lifetime experience!”
Reviewed 1 March 2012

My husband and I were traveling through South Africa in Feb and almost didn't set aside time to stay at a game reserve. On the recommendation of a friend, we decided to stay one night at Hlosi and had the MOST AMAZING experience there, that it became one of our favorite memories from our trip. The service there is above and beyond what one would expect! We stayed in the honeymoon suite, which could not have been more gorgeous. It was huge and very luxurious with an indoor and outdoor shower and a spa bathtub. The service was outstanding! Upon arrival, staff greeted us with cold drinks and towels and then served us a wonderful high tea snack and while we were out on our first game drive they came to our room to turn down the bed. We were given drinks again after the afternoon game drive and then dinner was served an hour later and was absolutely fantastic! They really thought of everything and my husband and I went to bed completely stuffed! Everyone was very professional and friendly. We had to leave a little bit on the early side the following day to make it to our flight and the staff completely accomodated us by arranging a game drive that would return in time for us to get to the airport. We had a wonderful time at Hlosi and got to see so many different animals. I would definitely return and would definitely recommend to friends. Also, it is located only about 45 minutes away from Port Elizabeth airport, so easy to get to.

A beautiful, tranquil place with a fantastic team of staff who made us very welcome. To sit on the terrace and watch the animals in such natural surroundings was wonderful. Great fun on the game drives with a final siting on lions - thank you!

I stayed at Hlosi recently with my 2 children and can only say WOW WOW WOW!!! What a special place. The room was stunning with very high quality finishes and lots of attention to detail in terms of decor. The game drives were excellent and we saw a wide range of animals. The attention to detail and high level of service was excellent.

The Amakhala reserve is a perfect size for a 2/3 night safari stay. We were there for 2 nights, and were lucky to see nearly all the animals and fit in a trip down the river on the reserves boat.

The huge attraction to us was the fact Hlosi cater for young children - we were on honeymoon and desperate to do a safari, but so many will not let children even stay in the lodge. Our little one (15 months) was welcomed in open arms (literally!) by all the staff though, and it made the visit all the more enjoyable and relaxing. One of the staff from the lodge stayed in our room with the little one for all the drives we did, and their love for kids shone through.

The price may seem expensive, but it covers every meal you eat plus beers and house wines too so you don't spend anything while you stay. The food was exceptional - a hearty brunch when you get back from the morning drive, and a 5 course feast when you return in the evening.

Deanne our ranger ticked every box - clearly passionate about the animals but also really personable and easy to chat to throughout the trips. We were lucky - 2 of the 4 drives we did was just the two of us due to the arrangements of the others staying in the lodge, which made the trip all the more special.

Highly recommend a stay at Hlosi.

This was to be the highlight of our trip to South Africa and boy it did not disappoint even a second. The Amakhala game reserve is located close to Port Elizabeth and is a malaria free big 5 game reserve. We had made reservations at the Hlosi game lodge which had two distinct propositions for us (1) It allowed young kids on the safari (2) Provided vegetarian food. The welcome was very friendly and we were ushered into our hut which was truly luxurious and had expansive views of the reserve.

We spent three wonderful days at Hlosi Game Lodge on the Amakhala game reserve. They certainly offer a full-on safari experience with superb accommodation and excellent meals.
A typical day goes like this:
Early start – first game drive is at 6.30 after a simple breakfast
Game drive lasting around three and a half hours (more on this later)
Around 11.00 brunch is served, in the main dining room or on the terrace if the weather permits – a very satisfying meal with both cold and hot courses
After brunch a little down time in your cottage or around the main lodge
15.00 High Tea. Snacks and savouries to set you up for the next game drive
15.30 Game drive – again around three and a half hours
Around 19.00 welcomed back to the lodge with hot towels and a warm drink:
a chance to return to the cottage, freshen up, change and return to the lodge for dinner – top quality food and drink. A chance to chat and share experiences with other guests
Finally, off to bed to ensure you’re up for that next early morning start.

Everything described here is included in the price, so although it may appear expensive, you are certainly getting a lot for your money.

The game drives:
Amakhala is a very large and well stocked game reserve. On each day we were taken on a different route by Deanne our excellent ranger. Her knowledge of the animals, birds and vegetation was borne of a deep love and respect for the natural world. Over the three days she succeeded in showing us all the different creatures on the reserve with dedication, enthusiasm and a sense of humour.
The accommodation:
A large cottage, beautifully furnished with an enormous king size bed. During darkness you are escorted to and from the main lodge as the area around the lodge and cottages is not fenced.
The main lodge is elegant and spacious. There is a terrace with extensive views over the reserve and an inviting swimming pool.
Meals were invariably excellent.

Overall:
For just a few days you have a chance to sample the luxury safari experience. It is intense, thrilling and immensely satisfying.

Hlosi had outstanding service! My husband and I are "picky" eaters and the staff bent over backwards to accommodate us-even getting some fat-free milk for our cereal. Deanne, our ranger was an excellent and enthusiastic guide who knew so much about all the wildlife, the area and vegetation. Loved the lttle touches like the hot towels and cocoa after the game drives.

Only drawback was that the game viweing vehicle used could have been more comfortable :-)
