Linda and Robert are the best hosts in the world <3 ! This was our second visit and we hope the third will be soon. Igor and Lola and the cats took our hearts as well as the horses and chickens. And the old stonehouse itself is from a farytale!

We only stayed for a long weekend, but wish it had been longer. Robert and Linda are great hosts and nothing is too much trouble. We had a great room with a huge terrace. Plenty to eat for breakfast which was very tasty. Well positioned with a short walk into the town and close to the station to catch the little yellow train. The Grottes (caves) are close too and are well worth a visit. We didn't use the pool due to time constraints but it looked inviting and was a good size. We are looking forward to returning again soon!

My wife and I stayed at this B&B in a traditional French country house for three nights in April 2014. We found it a very pleasant place in which to stay. The Dutch owners are very welcoming, friendly, and helpful. Our room was large, clean, and comfortable with a view of the river close to the B&B. Breakfasts were excellent. The B&B has a wonderful resident dog and an attractive parrot who livens up the dining room. A l'Ombre du Fort served us well as a base for exploring a number of outstanding attractions in the area, not least of which is the walled village of Villefranche itself, a one minute drive from the B&B. Lovers of Romanesque art will be delighted with the area. St-Michel-de-Cuxa, St-Martin-de-Canegou, and Serrabone are within easy driving distance of Villefranche, all wonderful places. St-Martin-de-Canegou is reached by a beautiful 45 minute uphill walk from the village below where one parks. The capitals of Serrabone are in pink to red marble which makes them especially beautiful. A little further afield are the little church of St-Martin-de-Fenollar south of Perpignan with its ancient frescoes, and the outstanding cloister of the Elene cathedral. A detailed discussion of all these places can be found in the highly recommended book by Peter Strafford, "Romanesque Churches of France, A Traveller's Guide." The small, picturesque villages of Eus and Mosset are both within easy driving distance of Villefranche and fun to walk about in. Villefranche has an excellent restaurant, l'Odyssee. We also enjoyed a pleasant dinner at the El Patio restaurant near the center of the nearby large market town of Prades.

Room Tip: Nice to have a room with a view of the river.

We were driving through the area and spotted this charming B&B. we decided to stop and inquire about availability and are so glad we did! The hosts, Linda and Robert are so welcoming and passionate about their property. Our room was spacious and spotless! It is in a fantastic location right outside the city walls and it is an easy walk to town. We enjoyed drinks in the garden while our four yo wandered around the property! He loved the swing area, and the animals! We are already planning our return visit. I would absolutely recommend this place!

We chose to stay at A l'Ombre du Fort because of the consistently glowing reviews, and we were not disappointed. A point of difference for our stay was that we were in the Gite. As a family of six with four children aged from 9 years to 17, we like to stay in places which allow us some independence for self catering, and the Gite was perfect. The Gite has accommodation for four, so our two older children stayed in the B&B at a reduced rate.

Robert and Linda were indeed generous and knowledgeable hosts, giving us information about the area so that we had a full itinerary and for the week we had booked; we could have stayed longer! A special part of our stay was Linda's menagerie of cats, dogs and horses. She most generously gave our two youngest daughters an opportunity to groom the horses, they are still talking about this as a highlight. Another feature of our stay were the great restaurants we ate at in Villefranche, only a 10 minute walk from the gite.
We loved the history of the area, our favourites being the walled city of Villefranche and the Abbey of St Martin du Canigou. What surprised us was the number of possibilities for adventure sport activities.
Once in Villefranche I noticed there were a number of businesses for guiding adventure sports: hiking, canyoning, rafting in thermal springs, caving to name only a few. We had already organised to go snow shoeing with a guide who took us on the adventure of our lives up Mt Mantet.

I would thoroughly recommend A l'Ombre du Fort and the Gite to any family or group of people interested in outdoor adventures with perhaps a side trip into history and gourmet wine and cheese tours.

A remark about transport: we were backpacking as a family around Europe, and also chose A l'Ombre du Fort because of its proximity to the train line. We were not disappointed in this, but discovered that buying supplies for cooking/ doing laundry were more complex than we anticipated without a car. Linda and Robert came to the rescue and generously offered us a lift to the nearest town of Prades for grocery shopping twice during our week, but it would certainly be more convenient with your own vehicle. Buses, although cheap do not run frequently enough to make these day to day tasks a simple thing.

This is the finest bed and breakfast that we've ever stayed in. We planned to spend a night and stayed three. The rooms are spacious and spotless. The beds are very comfortable. The breakfasts are hearty and plentiful. The proprietors, Robert and Linda, are extremely kind, generous and helpful with any need you may have (train and bus schedules, driving instructions, places to visit, good values, etc.). This place is rated one of the top 25 B&Bs in France, and it's easy to understand why. They made us feel that we were in our home away from home.
Within an easy 10 minute walk to the walled 11th century medieval city of Villefranche-de-Conflent, set gloriously in a gorge amidst the towering Pyrenees mountains on all sides. It is a sight to behold. My wife and I have been fortunate enough to travel to every continent, except Antarctica. This place is as beautiful as any we have ever seen. Additionally, there are magnificent caves to explore teeming with giant stalactites and stalagmites, the "little yellow train" which offers an hour and a half ride through the stunning scenery of the Pyrenees Mts., a fort perched high in the mountains which can be reached through a strenuous climb or a 4X4 for a couple of Euros offering magnificent vistas, numerous hiking trails leading to natural wonders, and on and on - too many other things to list - the possibilities are endless. We will certainly return with friends and family to this piece of paradise.
And once again, this B&B is a must!

Room Tip: Everything worked perfectly in our room - WiFi, etc. Great views from our double exposure windows.
