Personal attention right from the start, when the owner met us at the station, despite us being an hour later than planned. The gite was surprisingly high quality for the price. I think they undersell themselves on their website. There are 4 floors with a main room on each floor, plus 3 loos, a bath and a shower. All equipment you could need, including hair dryer, iron and board. Thedecor is what I'd describe as 'new quirky', with effort made to show historical details such as beams, stone walls etc in clever ways. Beautifully done.
Villefranche de Conflent is a small medieval walled town. Very touristy in the day but quiet from late in the evening. While the gite was excellent, it wasn't clear before booking that the town only has a tiny food shop (mostly bakery products) and if you are not coming by car you will have to eat out every night and won't be able to buy washing liquid etc. There are several great restaurants though.
The owner was very pleasant and helpful but did not speak any English (at least, not to us!). We were fine with this but it wouldn't suit everyone. We translated the information book in the house, so non-French speakers might now find things a little easier! Payment also had to be in cash.
