The hotel is average as far as luxury is concerned as the property looks old. However, it is maintained well except for some scratches on doors. The hotel has excellent Spa and Pool for the family and my kids thoroughly enjoyed the pool. There are children play area, which kids enjoyed and a TV room. Though there are two restaurants, the choice of food are limited. Even the breakfast is average. The place is too crowded when we went and it was making us little uncomfortable in the pool and at breakfast.

Room Tip: Take a room facing the Sea, which has a excellent view. The other side is not so good as a view.

We stayed here mid-week during the Easter holiday with our 3 children. This was our first time here and we had previously read some reviews and did not expect too much...

Although it is quite pricey to stay for one night we did think the price did compensate for the fact that they offer a lot of children activities and pool. Having done some research for other accommodation in the area, Vildmarkshotellet was most suitable for children.

Called and spoke to their booking dept. where I asked several questions and booked a large family room with no water views, as apparently these large rooms are not available with water views but are on the reception/restaurant level with views towards wood/rock/road.

One disappointment was that when we arrived to the hotel to check in, there were a few things which I had queried with the booking dept which were inaccurate... also when we went to our room there was an area right outside our window where staff had their breaks and where they stood smoking cigarettes. We then went back to reception and got another room further along the corridor. The service at reception was not as service minded as I would have imagined. When I pointed out that we had been informed differently from the booking dept and reason for changing rooms (staff standing and smoking) they didn't seem too bothered or apologetic.

The family room had enough space for us all and comes with two single beds which can easily be moved around, a camping bed and two bunk beds which are folded out when needed. We did not require the camping bed but instead we had a cot for our youngest and the room was not too crammed.

The pool area was great as it was not packed with people (I can imagine it is much more busy during summer time) so kids and us had plenty of space to use the pool area. They have a pool with current swirling you around, a pool outside, a small (baby) pool with a waterfall, two jacuzzi and a normal indoor pool. The pools are not so large.

Kids also played in the play room area which is staffed and has lots of activities for kids. There is also a room where kids can watch films.

We had dinner in the evening at the restaurant. For the kids there was a buffet of pancakes or pasta with bolognese sauce which they could help themselves to and they could also have from the a la carte menu at half price. The dishes from the a la carte menu ranges from main courses around 200 kr upwards and to have potatoes/vegetables/salad with your meal you had to pay an extra 25 kr. For the price you pay it does not reflect the quality of a 4 star hotel...

In the evening there was a disco for the kids which was good fun for them. We also took the oppotunity to go swimming late at night with the kids which they enjoyed (pool closes at 10pm).

Breakfast provided was standard buffet - plenty available but nothing special.

Next day we went to Kolmården which is accessed nearby the hotel followed by a walk up a steep hill.

In all it is a convenient hotel when visiting Kolmården and definitely geared towards children but in some areas it is not quite a four star hotel.

My son and I decided to pop by the hotel last minute to see if they had any room available. Their standard room cost incl. breakfast and 2 days entrance to Scandinavians largest zoo costed just under EUR 400. Steep, but considering a 2 day pass for an adult is EUR 59 and for a kid is EUR 47 with parking included...it would seem fair you think. Hrm...consider the following: the room was clean, but really out-dated with long winding corridors and low ceilings. It felt stuffy walking to/from the room. The bathroom was just ok. The only reason you are residing there is for the zoo, it's located way off the beaten track, not in a city providing you with options of entertainment or dining off premises. So why the high standard room price?
On the upside: the SPA area was wonderful. We went in August when most of the schools already started in Sweden, so it was not overly crowded. They had 2 floors for the SPA and pool area. Too bad I was alone with child, otherwise I would have scheduled a massage and a facial.

Room Tip: Do opt for a view of the lake...otherwise you only get a mountain wall/ vegetation.

Not the cosiest of hotels due to its size but adequate rooms and great surroundings. Good food. Enjoyed the spa-area of the hotel and the bath-robe and slippers that were provided were a bonus.

Room Tip: Try to get a room viewing the water.
