Look, there's usually one reason people go to Vimmerby during the summer and that is Astrid Lindgrens Värld (theme park). Accomodation in the theme park itself is limited and Vimmerby Statshotell quite sensible handles the overflow plus the people (like us) that'd rather not stay next to a bunch of caravans and tents.

Everything people on here are complaining on stems from this: is it expensive for what it is? Sure, but not much more expensive than staying in a self-service cabin on the theme park's grounds. Are the (regular) rooms small and have a bunk bed crammed? Yes, but this is done during the summer to accomodate the majority of guests which are families which need the extra beds (and don't want to pay for two hotel rooms). It is quite easy to tell from the position of the leather headboards and the TV that what they've done is move the regular twin bed and put in a bunk bed. So finally, the question to ask yourself is: Am I in Vimmerby to hang out in my hotel room? No.

Having got that out of the way, let me say this: the hotel is in a beautiful pink building, smack on the main square in picturesque Vimmerby. The street in front of the hotel is closed for traffic in evenings, making it quiet and easy for the kids to run across the street for an ice cream. The rooms are fine but tight, but the bathroom is nicely appointed. The elevator is a bit dingy and should be renovated but otherwise everything was up to snuff.

The breakfast buffet can be, uhm, lively with all the kids but arrive early to secure a table outside on the patio and there's no problem. Parking is a bit of a hassle as the hotel only offers a drop-off/pick-up zone on a side-street but once you check-in, they give you a parking slip that allows you to park in the lower parking garage of the nearby Coop supermarket.

To conclude, is it the best hotel I ever stayed in at this price? No, but it was perfectly fine for what it was and I'd bet it is better in the off-season when the family rooms are converted back to regular doubles and there are less kids in the breakfast area. But if you're planning to visit Astrid Lindgrens Värld and can't or won't stay on campus, then this is a perfectly good alternative.

Room has 4 single beds in the form of 1 bunk bed and 2 single beds squashed into a very small room. No room for bags. Room is expensive by international standards and ridiculous for this backwater. Hotel restaurant offers basic dinner also at expensive prices. No quality here.

I had a single room with a sofa bed for my 5 yr old. It was a very small room, but it was a single. No problem for the two of us. It had been a couple of very warm days and the room was very, very hot. It was like a steam cooker in there. I couldn`t find the air condition button, so I went down to reception where I was told that there was no individual regulation of the ventilation system in the rooms. So, nothing to do about the room`s temperature except opening a window, which we did, and it helped a little, but not enough to make it a comfortable night.

Very friendly staff in the reception. They were all smiles and happy to help with directions and restaurant choices.

The room (apart from being very hot) had comfortable beds and very nice pillows. It looked like ut had been newly renovated (well done, too), so I was quite surprised to see an old fashioned, tiny TV in there. Bathroom was small, but very clean. Good shower. No toiletries (apart from hand soap and shower gel in a dispenser), so bring your own.

The location was good, in the center of the town, but it also makes it harder to park. After three rounds around in the town (my GPS led us astray), we eventually found the main entrance to the hotel and found a place to park while asking for the hotel`s parking lot. It was in the lower floor of a garage belonging to a shopping center near by. No signs.. The hotel is a 15 minute walk from Astrid Lindgren`s world, 20 minutes if you have small children.

Breakfast was adequate, but not more than that either, judging from a Scandinavian point of view.

All in all, a good hotel with excellent staff in a town almost entirely build up around the Astrid Lindgren`s world.

Room Tip: Bring a fan if you travel during the summer season.

The hotel is located at rhe central square in Vimmerby, a pitoresque smallish Swedish town. The surroundings are nice and the short distance to "Astrid Lindgrens värld" (Astrid Lindgren's World) an added value. The rooms ate far to small and get rather warm. Breakfast is OK, but not more than that.

Stayed there in autumn holidays (October).
The hotel has a perfect placement, but our room was so far away from reception as it could be.
Nice beds, but too tiny room for a family to stay there.
Too less furnitures as well, 2 chairs, missing table, no wardrobe for hanging clothes.
Staff was very friendly, internet worked ok, but you need to type in username/password each time you want to go online on the iphone. But nice speed.
Breakfast was very high standard, fresh orange-juice, boiled eggs and lot of different fruits.
Missed was a place to smoke, when stayed on the second floor in the end of the corridor.
Because of the placement it is worth to stay there, but rooms are too tiny for the requested price.
Notice that parking, is a bit away, but your car will be locked in for the night, so if you not need the car, then it's good. Also it's under a supermarket with fair prices, and a wonderfull pizzaria less than 50 meters from the hotel. :)

Room Tip: Ask for one with view to the square.
