Took a tour out here while visiting Phuket. The number of islands and the beautiful grottos are truly stunning.

A long boat trip brings you to these truly awesome outcrops. As you approach Phang Nga/James Bond Island (man with the golden gun), you see a tiny crescent beach covered in boats beached up and boats waiting to get on. We got on quite quickly. The place was mobbed. Everyone was taking photos of the island and other outcrops. You could climb up a short distance which gave good views and you could walk over to the other side of the island where there were only a few people. It was very noisy like headache level and there were so many people in a tiny space and all the boat engines were running and churning out exhaust! That said - had there been a third of the people there it would have been perfect as it really is a stunning location.

There were 6 of us including 4 adults and 2 children under 6, the kayaks were the proper sea kayaks not the slower sit ons and the scenery was fantastic, paddling between islands (Kohs) and into hidden caves that opened up to internal lakes (Hongs) we were treated to a smorgasbord of wildlife, we only saw 4 other people the whole day, at lunch time when we went to a beach to have the Thai lunch provided, the kids loved it as it wasn't Thai Hot but you could spice it to your own comfort level. A great trip and one we'll do again!

Phang Nga Bay or James Bond Island is simply a beautiful place off Phuket - the most popular limestone cliff (which was featured in the yesteryear Bond film) defies the laws of gravity and physics. There is a popular claim that these very limestone cliffs rising to several hundred feet into the air out of nowhere, were the very inspiration for the hanging mountains featured in James Cameron's award-winning film "Avatar" - but the truth is he found inspiration in China.

Nevertheless, this place is surreal and quite a few times you are bound to wonder how they came to existence. Much as this place is pristine it is, unfortunately, crowded and if you happen to choose a wrong day (public holiday etc.) the noise levels can give you a headache and kill the experience for you. So be wise in choosing your day of travel - Operators who offer this as a day-trip are dime-a-dozen and there is hardly much to differentiate between 2 operators. A standard motorboat ride to the island, food & beverages included, sight-seeing for a few hours by stopping at scenic locations is the standard package on offer.

If you do have the budget (which I din't have), you could rent a private boat - what that helps you do is to beat the traffic - you get to the island way before the average tourists do and then you literally have a private island to yourself. It will cost you an arm and leg though.

All in all, if you are in Phuket, you got to visit this place - either at a budget or with the works.

And here is a tip for the budget traveler - most people are besotted with the view of the most famous cliff - almost 90% of the crowd is stuck around this cliff trying to get some cool clicks. The real cool ones simply walk around to the other side of the island and lo and behold you find an untouched cave - nestled inside this is a small cafe that serves beverages and beer. Grab your drink and park yourself on the quaint bench. The noise levels diminish to a distant whisper, you hear the wind blowing, your eyes are set on the horizon and the calming effect of the waves. We spent most of our time on the island (which was about 2 hours) at this place and love the peace and quiet, away from the noisy crowds.

We booked for a private tour of water rafting and 1 hour of ATV through JC Tours. Instead of pick-up at 7am for group tours, we were picked up at 9am. So we didn't have to get up so early and yet could enjoy our lovely breakfast. The ride to the water rafting site took 2 hours. As we were driven in a mini van for our family of 4 only, we could stretched out and sleep, haha.
The water rafting had two paddle guides. The level 3 ride down the fast flowing waters were such a thrilled. I am so happy that I could still enjoy such fun in my late fifties (thanks to encouragement from grown up children). We had lunch and the food was good. Then it was time for our 1 hour ATV ride. This too as a first for our whole family. Initially it was not easy to manage the vehicle but after sometime, we were able to drive it. I think it is a good idea to have at least 1 hour for the ATV. Most standard tours offers only 1/2 hour ride and by the time you muster the vehicle, it is time up. We had great fun riding through water puddles, up slopes and made exciting turns. For this tour, a walk to the Paripat Waterfall was included. Both my son and daughter swam to the foot of the waterfall, climbed the rock and had a great photo taken.
