Stayed here for four nights at the beginning of April and it truly was paradise. Taam and her staff can't do enough for you! Lovely people in an amazing location. Taam even came to wave us off when we left on the long tail. Would definitely return, great value for money. Simply amazing!

Great hotel on a lovely beach. An unspoilt bit of Thailand. Friendly & very relaxing.
Just a few places to stay along this beach & a couple of quiet relaxed beach bars.
Worth hiring a kayak to paddle round to neighbouring bays.

Room Tip: Rooms built up the hillside. All pleasant but ask for a lower level room, if you don't fancy cli...

I am so tempted to say that this resort is horrendous and the island is disgusting - don't go there, stay away!! However that is a big fat lie!!! I just hope that Koh Jum and Ting Rai don't get spoilt so that we can return in 10 years time to be greeted by Tam and her smiley staff!

You know you're on to a good thing when long tail boats have to come out to meet the ferry to get you to the island paradise of Koh Jum / Koh Pu. All the hoards of travellers on the ferry stayed on the ferry, while we disembarked on to the Ting Ray boat. Although we had been in Thailand for 4 nights already, this is the moment we felt like we arrived!

The longtail boat took us to a gorgeous deserted beach, where our rucksacks were carried up a lot of steps to reception. From the sea you can barely tell there is a resort here - everything is nestled into the jungle in a very understated way. Reception is where Tam greeted us with a winning smile and the most refreshing fruit juice I've ever had! We were booked in and made to feel at home, then when we were ready our bags were again taken up even more steps, right to the highest bungalow (the down side of staying in the honeymoon hut - it's at the top of the hill!! However the walk up to it from the beach is brilliant exercise!!)

The Honeymoon hut was beautiful and rustic - a four poster bed, basic shower/toilet room and a veranda with the perfect view. The only way it could have been better is with air conditioning, however since mains electric only arrived on Koh Jum in recent years it is understandable! There were 2 big fans in the room, which was adequate.

After making ourselves at home, we went back down to the reception / restaurant and enjoyed a drink and bite to eat in the open restaurant looking down onto the beach.

The beach itself is beautiful, there are swings from the trees, shaded beach huts lovely sea to cool off in when the sun overheats you.

In addition to the restaurant where the waiters are friendly and always smiling and laughing; there is also Mr Boys bar which opens up in the evening. Lying on the decking by the beach with cushions and a beer, watching the night sky whilst listing to music and the sound of the jungle was just brilliant. Mr Boy and his staff are lovely, lovely people!

We were originally booked in for 2 nights, but ended up staying for 4! The resort, food and drink is such good value. Plus you can book ferry tickets through the resort which is very useful. If you don't like rustic accommodation, and sharing your hut with jungle insects and reptiles, then this may not be the resort for you! During our time here we hired the sea Kayak, hired a motorbike to explore the island and spent a lot of time relaxing on the beach with a book, and in the sea with a snorkel.

On our final night we were treated to an epic thunder storm, which knocked the power out for a while - we resigned ourselves to the fact that we wouldn't be able to pack in the darkness, but the power returned after an hour or so.

We would return in a flash, and we wish we had stayed at Ting Rai longer.

Thank you Tam and the Ting Rai team :-)

Our stay at Ting Rai was really good. The value of this place is fantastic. We had an issue with the electricity in our room on the first night and they came and fixed the next morning as it was late but it then broke the following evening. I went to see the manager and she was really apologetic and upgraded us to the deluxe bungalow for the remainder of our stay, they also took some money off our bill at the end. The food was really good and pretty good value too. The only reason I wouldn't give it five stars is because as a beach resort, it should really have some loungers for the beach, especially as the tide gets so high that when you lie in the beach once the tide has gone out, the sand is really wet so lying on a towel isn't really an option. They do have some mats but there aren't enough to go round. Otherwise - 5 stars.

I had a few issues with this resort which is why I wouldn't come back. They weren't massive... but there was enough for me to try somewhere else next time.

My first problem with this place, is that it really isn't set up for a group. We realised this was a quiet island but Ting Rai Bay Resort didn't have enough of anything for us to all do an activity. Infact, it seems that most of the guests could easily miss out. There were only 4 snorkells to hire (50 baht) and two that we had tried were leaky. 1 life jacket, 1 kayak to hire and 3 motorbikes to hire (300baht/day).

The snorkelling wasn't very good - Koh Lipe has better snorkelling from the beach.

Please don't hire the motorbikes unless you have a lot of experience. You pay your money and go, no helmets or advice. Here is the advice!! Most of the island's road is not sealed and chances are you will fall on the downhill once the road turns to lose sand/rocks (especially if there are two of you on a bike). Within our group we managed a very mashed/gooey knee for one person and an ankle bone bruise for another. But if you do want to give it a go, and need more bikes than is offered, they will be offered at a higher price. You will be told this is because it is more costly to hire one outside of the resort but this isn't true. You can take someone on the back into town and hire another for 200 - 250 baht.

Laundry is 80 baht / kg.

Anyway, the resort itself. I stayed in a honeymoon room. The room was ok. The fan isn't on the roof and instead there are two stand up fans, they generally kept the heat away at night. My main issue was the lack of curtains! There is only a mesh fabric for curtains which at night become VERY see-through. Possibly not what the honeymoon room is after. This room is at the very top of the resort which means an awful lot of stairs to climb. This isn't a problem exactly, just something people might want to know. But by the time you get to your room you want to go back down and get a cold drink.

This leads to the other issue, the drinks are not cold. Not the biggest problem in the world but really annoying if you are hanging out for a cold beer. It seemed a little odd but the fridge stops the drinks getting warm but doesn't actually manage to keep them cold. I would go for a fruit shake if you want a cold drink.

The menu is a little pricey, even for an island. A rice dish is the cheapest around 90 baht. Everything else is more around the 200 - 250 baht range. The food price is similar next door at Koh Jum and the menu is a lot larger. Oonlee on the other side is pricier, and even more stairs to climb =)

The bar at the bottom is terrible. The cocktails are the worst I have tried. The good news, next door at Koh Jum Resort has happy hour from 5-7pm and makes delicious cocktails. The Mango Cooler was a favourite.

Unfortunately there isn't a bunch good to say, although nothing was massively terrible. The beach is nice. There are a few hammocks around and they have some huts near the beach that you can lie in with shade which was nice.

Found this place on the 1st rank in Tripadvisor..and the price per night is very budget-friendly.
Well knowing the huts are in the jungle, we expected lizards in the room, which we dont mind. For some it can be an issue - but we didnt know about the monkeys, the rats or the wild dogs on the Island. The hotel warns you about them, when you check in, which we thought was a funny feature. For some it might be an issue.
The huts are placed on a hill, so if you're inmobil or can't manage climbing stairs, this isn't the place for you.
To get there, we went from Koh Ngai to Lanta and from Lanta with a longtail we booked through the hotel, because we werent able to make it at time with the ferry.
When we left, we went with a longtail and got on the ferry to Krabi, in the middle of the sea, which worked out very well.
PROS:
-Amazing location with a stunning view over the jungle and the sea.
-Only noice you will hear is the jungle and the animals.
-Food and drinks are very well made
-The staff is extremely friendly, they are laughing all day long and joking around with their guests. You'll only see BIG smiles from them.
The service they give to their customers is why they are on the 1st rank in Tripadvisor, i believe.
-Mr Boy's bar is the best place to watch the sunset from and Mr Boy is a loving, caring and funny guy who we spend some good times with.
-The beach (not the sea) is beautiful with powdery sand, many crabs and cozy sea-huts to relax in.
-When we needed a scooter with automatic gears, the hotel arranged it in 10 minutes (though they charged us 100 baht extra for the delivery...and didnt offer us to rent it for half a day, (which we found out other guests did) instead of 24 hours, so we could have saved some money when we just used it 5 hours)

CONS:
-Holes in the mosquitonet, which caused two nights with different insects in the bed with us.
-The rooms could use a good makeover and forexample close the BIG gaps in the floor, so you cant see the bare ground underneath you...and so the insects cant get into your room + a really good cleaning and maybe some white painting inside, so you can see what kind of insects you're sharing the room with.
-No aircon...but a fan though.
-The sea is not good for anything else than to cool of on shallow waters. Many rocks and too unclear to see anything when snorkling.
-The hotel charges 80 baht per kilo laundry. 1,5 km from the hotel they charge 40 baht per kilo.

Ok confession one. I'm very bad a getting around to writing reviews so this review is for Dec 2011. Firstly, if you're looking for the bright white sand and towering Karsts of the tourist brochure, move along (quietly please) because thats the the thing about this island....no loud parties, irritating truastafarians, or lobster coloured package tourists, just hammocks, day beds and peace and quiet. The resort food is good quality and great value. Take a wander northwards to Onlee for a classier bite and the best beach bar. Nothing is too much trouble, be it arranging a boats to and from or a taxi down to the town (you can walk it if you want allow a few hours). I recommend hiring a kayak from somewhere and taking a paddle down the beach as well. The real Thai friendless and warmth is on display in abundance around here and I promise you really won't want to leave. Just don't come expecting an antispetically clean five star resort with hot running water.

Room Tip: Top of the hill facing the ocean!!
