“joyous luxury with great service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 March 2011

Koh Kood as an island is idyllic full of unspoiled forest and secluded beaches. Shantaa is the perfect escape resort for those looking for peace and quiet. The food is wonderful and varied - Ok there are only a few western dishes and if its Tony’s thin crust you are after this is not the place. I recommend the delicious salads - fried tiny fish with onion, tomato, carrot, fish sauce, lime juice and palm sugar or Poh Poah, raw fish with shredded veg and chilli............ Beats a sandwich and soup!

The room my wife and I had was very special, well designed, well laid out, very clean and very comfortable. It sat back a little from the landscaped gardens, surrounded by huge palms. The short walk to the beach bar and jetty, through the gardens, was a delight and something we miss doing.

The staff were very friendly and informative and could not have done anything more to make our stay amazing.

I hope we can come back soon

We chose Shantaa based on Trip Advisor reviews. However, we wouldn't have said this was the no1 resort on the island, for a few reasons.

Unfortunately it started early - we got to the resort, got off the speedboat at the pier, were put on the back of a rickety old jeep and driven (too fast) to the resort, where we were sat down at reception with a drink, then eventually taken to our room. We had a very quick and mumbled explanation of things such as restaurant opening times, etc but as tired travellers, only half listened, expecting there would be something in the room to explain everything in a written form. It wasn't there! There was nothing in the room to tell us about all those little essentials, a map of the island, a bit of background on the island, where's the nearest shop, etc. No minibar, no telephone to call reception. We were in a 'sweet' and expected these basic things at least! So many things they got right - the bathroom was amazing, the beds were clean and comfortable, there was loads of wardrobe space. But there was something missing, that extra mile that would have made all the difference.

The girls who worked in the restaurant did nothing for the reputation of thai people as happy and friendly, they were miserable and never responded to us asking if they were ok, saying good morning, saying thank you, etc. The owner lady seemed very nice and friendly - it is a surprise and a shame that this didn't pass onto her staff who seemed like they didn't really want to be there.

The food in the restaurant was good, but the menu was not varied enough and the Thai food was extremely spicy, even though we are Thai restaurant regulars in the UK.

Finally, we hired scooters and were so pleased we did. You must, must, must go and see Alex at the Italian restaurant on the island - he was fantastic! As well as cooking some great food, he was so friendly and gave us all of the amazing sightseeing tips that Shantaa unfortunately didn't. Thanks to him we found the secret waterfall! If we hadn't hired the scooters, to be quite honest we would have felt completely claustrophobic in the hotel, there just wasn't enough to do - no TV, no wifi, not even any other cafes or restaurants nearby. And because the staff weren't the friendliest around, you didn't even feel comfortable going up to reception to ask for a cold drink.

By the end of our stay we absolutely loved Koh Kood and didn't want to leave, but if we came back again, we definitely wouldn't come back to Shantaa. It was also somewhat spoiled by being near the noisy local jetty.

I hate to be cliched, but it really is amazing- like the other reviews say. My only regret is leaving to go to Koh Mak (we had a bad experience at the hotel, probably due to being so spoiled at Shantaa).

The rooms are amazing, we were in S2 (a sweet). It is one of the best rooms we have ever stayed in, from the bed, all you can see are a million palm trees and the ocean. The bathroom was just stunning, tropical plants amid a rain shower and a massive round bathtub. The best thing about the resort was that we felt we had it to ourselves, in fact we felt like we had the whole island to ourselves. I walked to the beach on the left during the daytimes and wandered along the shore for a km each day, and did not bump into anyone. It was heavenly. Perfect white sand, no buildings or rubbish. Food was cheap and fantastic. The staff could not have been more subtle, helpful and polite. Highly recommended. A rare touch of paradise. We stayed for our first wedding anniversary and had a prefect trip.

Our 6 night stay was wonderful. The place is very tranquil & romantic. We agree with all previous good feedback written about Shanta. The resort is quite isolated, but that's not a bad thing if you are looking at relaxing/chilling out. If you take one of their free bikes on offer, there's a local shop about 10-15mins ride away that has cold beers & basic snacks. The resturant supply ice & eskies free of charge, Kayaking to the next big bay is also worth it. Much busier, but its got a very wide white sand beach....or if you paddle up the river mouth (at the entrance to this beach just mentioned) there's a nice resturant called Mangrove that we recommend for lunch. Phon, the main reception girl at Shanta, will give you specific directions as she was the one that recommended it to us. On another day, we actually rode the bikes there....great ride despite a few hills.
Fantastic place with wonderful staff at a fabulous location!

I can't recommend this place enough after spending four nights there with my husband and mother. The hotel excels on all fronts--property, food, rooms, service, the Thai massages. So much time and thought has been put into every detail and the beach is gorgeous! Never had such glorious swims anywhere.

We've just returned from a week at the Shantaa & would agree with most of what has been written previously. The Shantaa was one of the best resorts we have stayed at in SE Asia, excellent clean rooms, we were in a "Shantaa Sweet", very friendly & helpful staff and delicious food, it is unusual to stay in a resort for a week and still find the food interesting. In summary, the Shantaa is an excellent hotel on an, as yet, unspoilt island - but get there soon.

if you have "done" phuket and phi phi etc, love the food, the people and the country but want somewhere a bit different then koh kood and shantaa are for you. i actually think it beats all the usual destinations hands down. koh kood is a small under developed island reachable from bangkok by a 4 hour car + 1 hour speedboat journey; but it is a million miles from the pace of bangkok. the island is still covered in forest and hides away 2 stunning natural waterfalls that are a must see. hire a scooter for about 400bht/day and you can literally go round the entire island in one day taking in the fishermans village in the north - definately stay for food - and many little bays and beaches and just enjoy real local life plus the beautiful waterfalls.
But the jewel in the koh kood crown is Shantaa. Being family run with a maximum 30guests it is truly up there with the best hotels in the world. in fact the six senses have a hotel on this island but whilst costing about 10 times more probably doesnt come close to Shantaas laid back ambience.
if you treat yourself to stay in one of the 5 "sweets" you have a fantastic outdoor bathroom/shower (no issue with damp or creepy crawlies etc) and king size bed with a perfect sea and sunset view through the palm trees. the hotel's private beach next to the quiet pier (only guests/fisherman) is reasonably compact but just the overside of the pier is over a mile of empty palm fringed beach. grab some water, towels and beach mats from the beach bar, pack yr book and suncream and find your secluded spot for the day. the sea is a stunning turquoise and is shallow and warm enough to cater for all abilities.
one of the many highlights is the food. we stayed 8nights which is always a concern if the place doesnt live up to expectations. we had therefore planned to eat out a bit but after our first night and read through of the menu we felt no need. if you love thai, fresh seafood, and quirky house specialities then you will also eat in everynight. i think i only ordered the same dish twice - the house salad - because the variety on offer was simply amazing. plus although not included in the room rate the food and drink prices are incredibly reasonable.
we have recommended this place to all our friends and family because we cant think of a better hotel in thailand that can match Shantaa's hospitality, food, location and incredible value for money. go now before time catches up with this place.
