We stayed for a week in an Ocean Villa and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The villas offer ample space and can easily accommodate two kids as the dressing room offered ample space and was effectively converted into a separate bedroom.
In combination with the beach club it offers the best of both worlds: Lounging in our villa, with access into the shallow ocean (I wouldn't call it much of a beach but it is still nice to wade into the shallow waters) and the beach club with its pristine sands, that definitely are second to none in Asia (the truly compare to Tahiti and the Maldives, absolutely clear water, no junk). And the personal buggy makes the commute between the two easy and was a favourite for our kids. Also beach service is excellent.
Dining options are good, especially breakfast stands out. Excellent choice and quality, almost over the top (or would you expect a cooled walk in pavilion just for cheeses and cold cuts in the middle of the jungle). Restaurant variety is good with ample choices (including villa service). Food quality was good but not outstanding - mostly really yummy and a few occasions not so much. I guess we just noted it since they spoiled us so much in general. Food prices are generally at the higher end of comparable resorts - however, they also throw in a lot of goodies for free (free mineral water, ice cream and chocolates all day - which makes you eat for to much of the latter ;-)
Their kids clubs are top notch - our kids enjoyed both the Den for over 5 year olds and the Eco Den, which took great care of our two year old. Staff is very nice overall, especially housekeeping. We also were very much satisfied with our Friday (we heard a mixed bag of reviews from other guests) but feel that the Friday concept is a bit flawed, since they are more like personal concierges (which at least we don't need during such a vacation) than a butler (since they serve 3-4 villas and you have little natural contact). While it is great that you have one Friday serving you from start to finish (I also wouldn't mind two alternating) that add much less value than e.g., St. Regis' butlers how really show up when meals are served (or serve them themselves), supervise housekeeping and so on. So combining these two concepts would make it perfect.
But at all in all a unique resort and a unique experience - from start to finish and everything in between (like their open air screenings at cinema paradiso or the cocktail on the beach, which unfortunately was offered only once).
Start and finish are special due their private airplane transfer, which is a bit less effective now since leaving from DMK not BKK airport, however still very effective. And it ist clearly benchmark for not wasting a minute of vacation - from leaving the villa to being airborne in under 30 mins.
Well done Soneva Kiri, we will be back!

- Official Description (provided by the hotel):
- Remote yet accessible, Soneva Kiri sits on Thailand's fourth largest but least populated island, Koh Kood, in the Gulf of Siam. Surrounded by lush, vibrant tropical vegetation and white beaches, fringed with palm trees, the resort has been tastefully and cleverly designed to complement the landscape and blends seamlessly into the outstanding natural beauty. Soneva Kiri epitomises the Soneva concept of 'intelligent luxury'. Only an hour's flight in the resort's private plane from Bangkok, it feels a million miles from the real world. The sense of tranquillity, seclusion and harmony with nature is second to none. Far away from the beaten track and well-trodden tourist attractions this is Thailand as it used to be thirty or even fifty years ago, genteel and untainted. And also just one hour by boat from the wonders of Cambodia. The 35 pool villa resort is perfect for groups or families, as it provides villas with up to 6 bedrooms. It also has a unique children's den in the form of a manta ray, and a newly launched Intrepid Explorer's Club for the children under 5 years old. It was recently awarded with The Smith Award "Best for Families" from Mr. & Mrs. Smith. ... more less
