Since its inception in 1959, Kala Vikash Kendra in Cuttack is the centre for teaching and organising performances of Indian Classical and Folk dance and music especially the beautifu and charming Odissi dance. It rund a college of Indian dances and music having classes in Hindustani vocal, Odissi vocal, Pakhwaj, Tabla and Odissi dance upto post-graduate level. It is reckoned to be the "Mother Centre of Odissi Dance" and the illustrious guru Kelucharan Mohapatra contributed his talent to raise the credentials of this school.
I attended several days (21st - 31st Jan 2014) of the 14th Global Theatre Festival organised by the Theatre Movement of Cuttack that was held at the Kala Vikash Kendra auditorium and brought together dancers and performers from many parts of India and also Thailand for a festival and competition of dance and drama. It was wonderful to see the many forms of classical and folk dance, music and plays throught the festival from the children, youth and seniors. The costumes were fabulous and so were the enthusiasm and dedication of the performers to their art form. Being there during India's Republic Day also was a poignant reminder of the huge cultural diversity of the many states and regions in India and the differences and similarities of dance, music and drama.
This really is a great place to visit and if only the performance received wide publicity it can receive the full acclaim and honour to all the dedicated and committed artists that teach and perform here.
