“Alpen(wonder)land!”
Reviewed 24 February 2013

A wonderfully situated, clean, comfortable and efficient alpine hotel. Located at the start of a great X-country skiing circuit, as well as at the bottom of a downhill ski-lift, the hotel overlooks a wooded valley, at the end of which three impressive peaks dominate the view: the Spitzhorn, the Galtenhorn and the Wildhorn.
Functional, spacious rooms. Excellent restaurant with all the regional dishes (try the Rösti with cream spinach and fried egg!), where also an excellent breakfast is served. Lovely outdoors terrace, for lunch in the sun!
Easy to reach, the hotel is a great place to relax, do some sports (in a low-key, family fashion; outstanding hiking in the summer) and/or go to the slopes, exclusive restaurants, spots and shops in nearby Gstaad. Lauenen is a picture postcard; visit the beautiful little church on the eastern outskirts of the village!
The most important asset of the hotel is its staff: while Swiss efficiency can be taken for granted, Alpenland friendliness is worth a special mention!
Book ahead; the place is no longer a secret!

Room Tip: Nicest rooms face the Spitzhorn, the Galtenhorn and the Wildhorn!

The drive out from Gstaad to this hidden gem is spellbinding. If the sun is out, there is no place nicer to order lunch and admire the majesty of the mountains in the distance. We had lunch on New Year's Eve and basked in sun outdoors whilst enjoying a lovely meal. There is a small ski run in front of the hotel and a lovely trail for hiking or cross country skiing along a river. A highlight of our ski trip to Gstaad.

The hotel is a 5 to 10 minute drive away from the city center of Gstaad but it's so worth it! The views are amazing and breathtaking! We stayed here for one night and had room 110 on the first floor with a great balcony that covered the front and the side of the hotel = lots of space! The room was very clean and nice. We had dinner a the hotel as well and that was really good. Breakfast was excellent as well and the staff is very friendly and helpfull. I will be there again next year for the Country festival!

Gstaad is among the most wonderful skiing locations in the world for many reason, and that also means that hotel rates are very high. Hotel Alpenland Lauenen is a hidden gem, only 10 minutes from Gstaad, in a wonderful small village called Lauenen at the end of a valley with only one road into the valley. Alpenland is located at the very end of the road, with amazing views. It even has its own small ski lift system ideal for beginners, and a langlauf course.
Alpenland is a common chalet, with average rooms, but the combination of excellent service, location and value is unbeatable. Ivonne is the manager, and she is probably the reason why the service and management at this hotel is far above average for a small property like this.
I hope my review will not cause the Alpenland to always be fully booked. Fortunately we are booked again for 2011 and we can't wait.

This hotel is just on the edge of the village of Lauenen-do not let this put you off. It is a great location for walking to Lauensee-the lake nearby, about an hour's walk if you don't mind a little uphill hiking. The wooden sculptures on the way make it all worth it !
Back to the hotel-both ladies on the desk could not have been more helpful. We were shown to our room (206) which was huge.It also had a balcony as well as settee in the room and was very attractively furnished. The sloping roof of the room meant standing in the bath for the shower was a slight problem if you were over 5 foot 2 inches. But, nothing is insuperable. The bed was really comfortable and we were on half board so sampled both breakfast and a set evening meal. Interestingly, many locals seemed to drop in for a light breakfast or evening drink/meal so I think that's always a good sign.Breakfast was a good selection of cereals, yogurts, hams, cheeses, jams, fruit, boiled eggs etc. etc. Evening meal was fine with good service throughout-all staff had enough English.
The village is a little walk away-10 mins. at most but again well worth it. Some beautiful old houses and a medieval church plus tourist information office. It is situated about 15mins. drive out of Gstaad which is well worth a visit. Also reasonably easy to go to Glacier 3000 but check the weather first.
