“We had a good time at the Pig of Lead; a good base for many.”
Reviewed 15 August 2013

We enjoyed our 2 day stay at the Pig. The breakfasts were well cooked. We were well looked after.

The room was well decorated. The bed was large and impressive. I noticed that the bed under the thick well sprung mattress was solid. The pillows felt hard to me, but likely are fine for others.
The big TV had a satellite feed; very nice.

We stayed in the summer and kept the window open to reduce the temperature,
So maybe it was an ‘own goal’ for us that we heard the motorbikes on Sunday morning and the heavy trucks on Monday morning. – The Pig abuts the Via Gellia , one of the main roads through the Peak District, hence the traffic.

I appreciated that there was an electric fan in the room for use if required.

Bonsall is in The Peak District, very good for those who like scenery and / or walking.

Minor points

The toilet had no holder for the toilet roll.

The seats in the room were comfy enough, of an ‘IKEA’ style, but were low; at my age, I would have found this a nuisance over a longer stay.

Chosen with the help of good reviews on Trip Advisor, this B & B lived up to all our expectations.
The double en-suite had a super kingsize bed and a large screen TV in a spacious room. The modern fully tiled bathroom was equipped with a bath and a shower and there was no shortage of hot water. The breakfast was as good as any I've ever had in a b & b. Julie and John are excellent hosts and I would have no hesitation in recommending the Pig of Lead.
We didn't find the traffic noise a problem as some guests reported, but it should be considered if you want to leave the front window open all night.

Room Tip: The two second floor rooms have opening windows at the back, away from the road. They have ensuite b...

We booked up only 3 days beforehand for an 8-day holiday in the Peak District. As it happens the weather was excellent and we had some superb walks locally and up to 15-20 miles away.

The accommodation is an 18th century family house originally built by some wealthy landowner, it has visible wooden beams throughout and has been superbly refurbished. None of it is grotty with age, but all of it has character.

We had WONDERFUL breakfasts each day which set us up for the day, the proprietor was VERY helpful and friendly, the room was very clean - nothing can be faulted.

The only slight disadvantage was that the accommodation is approx 1 mile from the nearest pub for an evening meal. We found a great pub in Cromford (the Boat Inn, real ale paradise! live music on Friday nights), it was good to walk our meal down afterwards

Easy to find and easy to get around locality from here. Room was lovely, clean and spacious with lovely shower room en suite. Given the weather was cold and damp, the room was warm and cosy.

John and Julie were riendly and welcoming hosts - served us an enormous breakfast which kept us going most of the day.

both were happy to share their sense of humour and make their guests feel welcome without being intrusive

Room Tip: Our room was at the front of the house but the place is so well insulated it was quiet and dark enou...

We had our first experience of the Peak District and couldn't have chosen a better place to stay. Pig of Lead was our choice after looking st reviews on Trip Advisor. The location is withing easy access of major routes yet secluded enough to give a country feeling. Julie and her husband were very hospitable with plenty of information on locations to visit around Peak District. The B&B was very clean with a very special charm to it. Even had the pleasure of enjoying a nice fire by the fireplace in the month of May. The rooms were big and kept to a high standard with enough room for a travel cot in it. The big flat screen tv was nice with a choice of dvds to pick from if wanting to relax in the evening after long walks at Chatsworth, Keddleston and Sudbury halls. I would gladly recommend Pig of Lead to anyone who would like to see Peak District.
