We arrived today. We caught the bus from South Shanghai Bus Station as buses leave every half hour. If you go straight to the information desk they will help you as they speak great English! Bus took 1 hr and then a tuk tuk driver took us to our hotel. We gave him 100 cyn and our tickets at the hotel to see all the museums are 50. Without his help I don't think we would have easily found this place. The girls here speak very little English however they went above and beyond to help us. As soon as we arrived we wanted to stay another night! It's busy but so peaceful! The girls used a translator on the computer to help work out what we needed. As we had to cancel one nights accommodation in shanghai. Soo glad we are staying for 2 nights! We are in the oscar room it's huge! Lovely room!!!

Previous trips to China's quaint water-villages were day-trips, but this time at Xitang (西塘) we wanted to experience an overnight stay. We started by searching for inns along the canal-margins which would give us a water-view, but finding one in Xitang with a total of 6 rooms for our group of friends was a big problem. Finally, Secret Garden---exactly 6 rooms, minus the water-view.

Situated at the western edge of the village, arrival was literally by the back-door direct into the inn, saving us the hassle of lugging and dragging our luggages through the village proper. The young ladies who manage the inn were extremely friendly and approachable. Because we bypassed the village's main-entrance and ticketing office, one of them offered to scoot out to pay the entrance fees and collect the tickets for us.

Far away from the pub row (塘东街), the inn is in a peaceful enclave, yet its alley links directly onto the MistyRain Corridor (烟雨长廊), the main village 'street'. Pay heed and recognize the alley that leads back into the inn, for you may miss it when returning, especially in the night.

The 6 rooms are thematic, each a different size, different price, and a different decor. For the records, 3 are on ground (French Garden, South China, S.E. Asian) with the other 3 on upper level (Oscar Night, DongQing, XiangYun). Generally, the lower rooms are smaller, but all are comfortably furnished with attached baths. The rooms cloister around a chic hall, where friends can gather for chats, snacks and wine-tasting (Xitang's famous 'yellow' wine 黄酒) after returning from dinner and an evening-stroll. Nice way to end an enchanting evening in an ancient water-village!

Apart from low water pressure reported in one of the rooms, in all other aspects we found the inn more than adequate for a very cosy stay.

Room Tip: The 'Oscar Night' (what a strange name to a room in an old Chinese village) is a huge room...

My friends and I spent one day in Xitang and boarded in this little inn, each room furnished differently. Our transport drove us right to the back door where we could unload the luggage. The young ladies manning the inn were all helpful and pleasant. At such a reasonable rate, I found the stay comfortable enough.

Room Tip: If you do not wish to carry your luggage up the stairs, ask for a room at ground level.

From the Xitang corridor you have to walk for a few yards (meters) in a very narrow alley. At the end of the alley, you'll see the entrance to the hotel. You can't miss it.
The receptionist could speak a little bit of English. She was extremely sweet and she apologized probably a million time for her English, that was totally fine. She gave us tips on where to go to eat and how to go back to Shanghai the day after. She also offer us a ride with scooter to the bus station, but we preferred to walk.
The rooms we got (2 out of 8) were extremely clean and well furnished. We choose the Western style ones. All of the 8 rooms are differently furnished and decorated and you can choose yours at time of reservation.
When we arrived the hotel was fully booked, so we were glad we already had our reservation. You don't want to spend time looking for a place to stay, when you can enjoy Xitang.
The price for each room was extremely inexpensive, even compare to rest of China. No breakfast, but you can find nice food around for very cheap deals.
If I will ever go back to this area of China, I will pass here again and again and again. Best Chinese experience ever!

Interesting little guest house with 8 rooms (big for Xitang) in the heart of the old water town. None of the staff speaks English but with a smattering of very basic Chinese we got by. The staff went out of their way though to assist. We called the hotel from the station and someone came on a scooter to meet us and called a taxi to take us to the hotel (which we'd never have found on our own). We had chosen to book the room with a traditional Chinese bed, having been warned at the time of reservation that it might not be a good choice for Westerners. After going through a maze of narrow passages connecting one building to another, we found our room at the top of some steep stairs. It was perfectly adequate but the bed was quite uncomfortable (we enjoyed the experience anyway)! We'd recommend this hotel for an overnight stay in Xitang: it's basic but clean and inexpensive. Does not serve breakfast but does serve coffee and tea in the lobby and courtyard.
