Torridge House Cottages
Reviewed 10 August 2013

The cottage was very clean kitchen had all the things you would expect from a large family cottage but the lounge downstairs very dated and dull the conservatory was in much need of doing up roof leaked when it rained bedrooms very very clean as were the bathrooms the only one which was not so good was the 3 single bed one downstairs had a very funny smell .the garden was ok but if you had a small child and small dog they could very easily get out ,the farm which we only went to ones was just as advertised but there was no way you could allow or even want to walk there from the cottage very small lanes and a very very busy road to cross this was the most disappointed part of our stay as the children were hoping to go to the farm and pool most days so keep this in mind when considering southwood cottage

We have had a lovely relaxing week in Southwood House, perched on a hill down a quiet lane with Dartmoor in the distance. Ten of us stayed, ages from 85 to 7 years old and we all felt well catered for. The house is spacious and comfortable with two sitting rooms and plenty of space for playing, reading, or watching TV in comfort. The location is great for a wide range of outings, the beaches at Croyde, riding, walking and wild swimming on Dartmoor. The beautiful gardens at RHS Rosemoor are just down the road and the lovely Tarka Trail is a mile away. Torridge House and Cottages are a short walk away and the younger members of our party loved playing table tennis, visiting the swimming pool, and the amazing array of baby animals to see. Barry and Barbara were welcoming, helpful and very patient when we put laundry tablets in the dishwasher by mistake. We would happily return.

We went as a 3 generation, 3 adults and 2 children (5 & 11) group and were enchanted and entertained from the outset. Barry, Barbara and their family will ensure you have a great time and the cottages are so well equipped. A browse of the website will give you full details and there are no exagerations! If you are not already pet owners, be prepared for the children to return home wanting a rabbit, kitten or some such, as they will have had plenty of hands on experience....
Many attractions both beach and inland are within a short drive. We trust you'll have a great time during your visit.

We went to stop at the cottages in June, we were welcomed with a brew and shown round the site when we arrived. Its a beautiful location, just out of the way of the main town. Barbara and Barry were so welcoming and brilliant with the children.
Everything we needed was provided, including baby gates, bed guards and a cot at no extra cost. We stopped in the spacious Duck cottage, it was clean and homely and we loved our stay there.
The facilities on site are amazing for the, Barbara and Sandy who run the animal feeding are so engaging and fun with the children, also educational as we learnt something new each day. Outdoor Toys are provided and there is a heated pool on site too. So if you wanted a lazy day there is plenty to do on site, you have no need to go anywhere else.

I can not recommend staying at Torridge House Cottages enough, we will certainly be returning again. It is run with care and attention to detail which can only come from the time and love Barbara and Barry and there family and friends put into the cottages.
We even left with a bunny, (my son has named Bandit) he is our reminder of a lovely 10 day holiday!
Thank you for making our stay so enjoyable, and we will see you again soon. The Rushton Family x

We have just returned from our first holiday at the farm and it certainly will not be our last!
We have two young daughters (2 years and a half and a baby 5 months) and we had the most perfect stay. The cottages were clean and well equipped for children and other items that we had forgotten were sourced during our stay by Barbara. The complex itself has everything you need for a family break- laundry, play room for wet days, pool and various swim items, huge number of outside toys such as push alongs, slides etc and a well resourced library full of DVDs for young and old. The highlight was the animals though. Our toddler loved the twice daily feeding sessions. Barbara was so very good at involving her at her own level and she relished the 'responsibility' of feeding and looking after the animals and has talked non stop about it since our return. We will return...

We found this place by a search for family friendly holidays and would definitely say it is family friendly. Kids and adults can do as much or as little as they want in helping out around the farm (although the helping out was our boy's favourite part of the holiday). The welcome is fantastic and everyone does everything they can to make the stay as relaxing as possible. The cottage we stayed in was great and aside from the farm (plus pool and big outside and indoor play areas on site) there are plenty of days out in the area for any type of interest. We'll be back next year!

We have just come back from a wonderful week at Torridge House Cottages in Devon. We stayed in Stag cottage (spacious, clean and very comfortable). We’ve been coming to this farm for a few years now and always have a fantastic time. Our children, aged 9 and 11 enjoy it as much now as when they were younger. One of the things we love is that the children have the freedom to play on the farm, in an entirely safe way. Last week, they spent most evenings playing outside with the other children staying in the cottages. They went swimming (rather chilly!), played football , table tennis and endless games of “man-hunt”.

The farm is great for children who love looking after animals – there are cats, kittens, pigs, rabbits, ducks, chickens, mice, quails and a small pony. From young toddler to teenager, children can be involved in caring for them as much or as little as they want. Sandie clearly loves both animals and children and is brilliant at keeping attention and interest. She tells excellent stories and the children love her.

There are some great day trips within 5 to 30 mins drives: beautiful north Devon beaches (eg Westward Ho! and Hartland Quay – the latter is further away but exceptionally beautiful), cycling (tarka trail very close by), rafting in the Torridge river, the Big Sheep, Appledore, Rosemoor gardens , the milky way adventure park. I could go on. There are a huge number of things to do in the local area.

Barbara, Barry, Sandie and everyone else on the farm are friendly and welcoming and they create a lovely, safe environment. For us, the best thing about the holiday is the combination of lots of things to do whilst on the farm and some great day trips. The children are never bored and this year, (indeed every year), they asked us to rebook within hours of arriving.

Room Tip: Check out the website and ring the farm to discuss your preferences
