Torridge House Cottages
Reviewed 13 October 2013

We holidayed here for the second year running as a family from grandparents down to a five & seven year old. The house is lovely, very spacious & well appointed without making you feel that the children shouldn't touch anything. There's ample space for playing outside, the pool is very close by, as are the farm animals which provided hours of amusement. It's a very safe environment, well away from any roads. Barbara, Barry, family & helpers couldn't be more helpful, & we would struggle to find a replacement holiday anywhere else. We would recommend it highly.

We stayed at Southwood with 5 children aged 3 and under (2 families). The house is well stocked with all cleaning products, dishwasher and washing machine tablets etc as well as kids cutlery, plates, highchairs, cots and even fun bed linen. The double garage has been turned into a playrm full of scooters, cars etc, a lifesaver for a wet day. House was v clean (apart from spiders and cobwebs!!) and beds comfortable. Main lounge is tired but upstairs lounge is perfect, v modern with spectacular views. Our only gripe was that there's no bathrm upstairs and the beautiful bathrm at the bottom of the stairs had no shower despite it being huge. This meant borrowing either of the ensuits or using the sauna shower which is a bit dingy, all options involve walking through the lounge potentially in a towel!
Farm is exceptional for children and Sandy is so enthusiastic and great with the kids. It would be more convenient to stay in a cottage on the farm with children but Southwood is in such a stunning setting and a great size house and garden that the short drive doesn't matter.

We rented courtyard cottage for a week and it was a wonderful family holiday. The cottage was very clean, well equipped and considering it was an old cottage, every effort had been made to ensure it was child safe. The farm was brilliant for children and our daughter was not bored once. The staff absolutely made the holiday by being super helpful and were great with the children - my daughter even got a present when leaving. It was the personal touches that really made it such a wonderful experience and we would not hesitate to book again.

We rented Duck Cottage (one of the larger cottages) for a week for an extended family break, 4 grandparents, 2 parents and 4 children (2yrs-10yrs). Duck Cottage was clean, comfortable, spacious and extremely well equipped with everything one could reasonably wish for (Check the cottage description on the website).

Barbara and Barry were really helpful and friendly and the children thought they were in paradise with a free fun of the very safe grounds although most of the time was spent playing with and helping with the feeding of the kittens, rabbits and various other small livestock. The children also loved helping to search for and collect the eggs from the hens. There was also two spacious playrooms with various toys and games, table tennis etc when the weather was wet. You also have access to a huge library of DVD's, Videos and books to suit all tastes from toddlers to senior citizens. The library also has a PC linked to the internet and wifi in you have your own device. There is a large playing field with balls, swings and ride-on toys so there is plenty to keep the kids occupied. Should you feel like eating in but not cooking there is a good selection of home-cooked frozen meals available at a very reasonable cost.

One of the highlights of the week was the grandparents and children spending a morning at the adjacent Tarka Pottery where they were introduced into the pleasures of making and decorating small pots.

The beautiful Devon moors are only a short drive away as are the towns of Torrington and Bideford which offer a good variety of shops ranging from a Lidl to a very large Supermarket and from small village butchers selling local meat to local craft shops and farmers markets.

All n all a very friendly family orientated base for a holiday in the beautiful Devon countryside

As a way to keep grandchildren amused for a week, this is the answer to grandparents' prayers! Plenty of outside space within a safe environment, with approachable animals always around. Friendly, relaxed staff encouraging the children to make contact with the small mammals. Very well-appointed accommodation-read the specification!
Within the immediate vicinity, good walks, great beaches and some good theme parks. All-in-all a real treat for family!

Room Tip: All good. Get as big as you can!

I Could go on and on about this wonderful, enchanting and relaxing haven in beautiful Devon and never do it justice. In 8 years we have visited Torridge House 5 times... (Should be Torridge Farm) after a recommendation from friends.

This is the real deal, Barbara, Sandy and Barry make you feel so at home, there is no fussing, no dont touch this, dont touch that, stop this , stop that!! you are moulded into a part of the farm by their enthusiasm, excitement and loving commitment.

Kids go daily to collect the tastiest, fresh eggs you will ever have, feed the chickens, cuddle the ducklings, maybe feed the orphaned lambs, feed the pigs, pony etc etc etc. There is always something to do, or if you prefer..NOTHING to do, .its your holiday and you will never feel that you have to do anything but relax...You can be the full farmer or just a happy bystander...the choice is yours and its just so refreshing.

Having kids is fretful, scared of dropping a chick ,rabbit, lamb, mouse... don't fret, they take it all in their stride, they have seen it , done , it got the T shirt... from the most reclusive kid to the utter horror child, they have a way, I don't know how, or why.. but they just have a brilliant knack of making it all work seamlessly they promote the quiet and suppress the naughty...

All around are the best beaches, attractions, pubs, restaurants and towns this country have to offer, The most fantastic butchers, fresh veg...... its all there

I love it, love and I am 46.. my 3 girls cried from Torrington to Exeter this year as they just didn't want to leave...

I can't speak any more highly of this experience ( its not just a holiday) Big kisses from Lucy, Phoebe and Connie to everybody their... ESPECIALLY Sandy... they all love you so much XXXX

See you all soon
