Nice place, shame about the statue

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 9 May 2016via mobile
Good food served in cosy surroundings. Friendly staff. Excellent glass extension and outdoor terrace. Comfy room though shower underpowered and cut out halfway through washing.

However, there was one ghastly mistake, and that is the horrible statue of John Lennon (!) in the garden. Tasteless, tacky, pointless and in front of the church some might mistake it for 'Jesus'. Please get rid of it, and let your guests enjoy the garden free of this hippie hideousness.

We went here for lunch with a large number of friends. We had pre booked and pre ordered our food. We had the garden room to ourselves and it was a lovely room. The food was excellent and the helpings ver generous. They coped very well with a large party although one person was served later than the rest of us however his food was freshly cooked for him.

Thank you JudithG10 for your lovely review.

Large numbers are always a challenge but part of making most occasions extra special - pre ordering certainly helps us be more efficient, although I am disappointed we missed out on one of your party - reassured however that the food was freshly cooked when it finally caught up with him!

We enjoy adding the WOW factor so please bear us in mind for any celebration.

Best wishes,

Catkin

I've stayed here twice recently on business trips. The location is idyllic in a 'lost in time' Norfolk village with the collapsed church opposite, an old style village green and a moated National Trust stately home just down the lane.

On both occasions I stayed in the 'Coach House' rooms which are technically the budget options in the courtyard and very reasonably priced but are far from 'budget' being solid and well-built, refurbished, warm and tastefully decorated with new shower rooms and a big comfy bed. My colleague was upgraded on our last visit to the blue room in the main building and was apparently very pleased.

The pub itself has a log fire going almost permanently, is bright and welcoming and the owners have refurbished it excellently. It's new inside but it's not, so they've retained the character and history of the place but made it feel clean modern and comfortable at the same time. You'll see what I mean when you get there.

A fine selection of beers, wines and spirits await from knowledgeable, friendly professional respectful staff and the atmosphere is one of the friendliest and welcoming I have experienced in a 'local' with the landed gentry jovially rubbing shoulders with farm hands, rock stars with engineers and retired villagers buying drinks for travelling workers like myself.

Then there's the food! On the first stay they held a steak and cheese night with a high quality abundance and variety of both with selected wines with each course. Simply a stunning gastro-evening but still good value. The second stay was more 'regular' but starters and mains were all superb as was the ale!

Finally, there's the owners. They are both great characters and yes they are posh but so friendly that they're not. You know when you've been 'Catkinned'!

We will be back!

Room tip: All seem fine.

Dear Harv1909

Hats off to you! Wow 55 reviews...

I feel honoured that we scored a FIVE in your consideration. Thank you!

I love your description of our location - so spot on and neatly expressed with the 'collapsed' church opposite, the old style village green and the village 'lost in time' although rather brutally ravaged by time too - such that there is no school, post office or shop and only a bus once a week and a church service, once a month!

I am proud you acknowledge that everyone from all walks of life are most welcome here and that our staff endeavour to be as helpful as possible to make everyone's stay feel worthwhile.

Ahh - I remember that epic evening of our first Steak and Cheese evening hosted by our excellent and most popular Giles Cunliffe (Chef Patron) - it was all such fun and has encouraged us to think of organising another similar event. We shall keep you posted via our website/Facebook page.

I am glad we are considered friendly and not too posh! Thank you and a pleasure to have had the chance to welcome you amongst our usual eclectic mix of characters visiting the Bedingfeld Arms...

Best wishes and please come back soon!

Catkin

My wife and I stayed here for two nights, we asked for a non pet friendly room but when we got our room there was a pet mat and dog hairs about the place, I went to reception and said that that is not what we booked and to give David is due he changed the room for us to a non pet friendly but still cleaning could be better.

We had dinner the first night and the food was excellent and the service was friendly, all staff we met were very nice.

Breakfast was slow and we had to wait a while particularly on the second day however when the food arrived it was fine. I don't understand when toast is served with nearly frozen butter.

If we were down there again we would stay there

Room tip: make sure it is non pet freindly

Dear Stefan P

Thank you for your useful feedback, seriously.

'Non Pet Friendly' is either a Booking.com or Laterooms.com term which I find often confusing! I wonder why they don't just say 'dog free' bedroom/dining room...

I see you where transferred immediately into another room by David, so that was good. The cleaning in the following room seems to have slipped a shade in this instance and will be instantly picked up on by my very efficient housekeepers, Toni, Isabelle and Margarida.

Staff, ambience and food all with a tick, again good!

Not so good I see is the service at breakfast - which is probably due to us being in the very early stages of moving from our usual breakfast room near the till and reception area, into our new stunning south facing garden extension (known as the 'Oak and Stone' Dining/Meeting Room) which is more private - so I think I ought to buy a bell or alarm of sorts to offer a way of attracting attention if there is an unfortunate lull in the level of service.

Toast should be served piping hot (perhaps also a back up toaster on the side?) and with butter fresh from the fridge - to melt naturally on the hot toast. Squidgy soft butter like those from roadside cafe is not an option here unless specifically requested!

Let's hope we do see you again when you are next visiting us all the way from Crewe...

With best wishes,

Catkin P

We stayed here overnight and were absolutely thrilled to bits with our choice of hotel! Firstly the friendly staff, from the moment we walked through the door, they were excellent!! We had room one in the courtyard and it was beautiful! It was very comfortable, spotlessly clean and very well equipped.
We had breakfast and it was superb! Well worth the money. Excellent choices, nice quality and great portions too!! I'm Gluten Free and they offered me GF sausages and lovely bread rolls, what a treat!
We would definitely go back and strongly recommend it to family and friends alike!!!

Delighted to hear our GLUTEN FREE sausages were appreciated and bread rolls too!
We try to have everyone catered for, wherever possible. Please just let us know before your visit if there is a special dietary requirement. It will help on the planning side a lot!

The National Trust Hall opposite us is attracting visitors by the minute - everyday in the School holidays and otherwise closed on a THURSDAY - also local businesses have discovered that we beginning to serve breakfasts to non-residents - extremely popular and especially in the new sunny Oak and Stone Room (recent extension just opened!).

We are also planning to be serving food for most of the day now - matching our change in style of living - a 'light bites' menu will back up our usual popular dishes on our normal menus...

We look forward to hearing from you or meeting you if you are intending a visit our way.

Thank you JIVEJAN for your lovely review. Best wishes, Catkin
