I've stayed here twice recently on business trips. The location is idyllic in a 'lost in time' Norfolk village with the collapsed church opposite, an old style village green and a moated National Trust stately home just down the lane.
On both occasions I stayed in the 'Coach House' rooms which are technically the budget options in the courtyard and very reasonably priced but are far from 'budget' being solid and well-built, refurbished, warm and tastefully decorated with new shower rooms and a big comfy bed. My colleague was upgraded on our last visit to the blue room in the main building and was apparently very pleased.
The pub itself has a log fire going almost permanently, is bright and welcoming and the owners have refurbished it excellently. It's new inside but it's not, so they've retained the character and history of the place but made it feel clean modern and comfortable at the same time. You'll see what I mean when you get there.
A fine selection of beers, wines and spirits await from knowledgeable, friendly professional respectful staff and the atmosphere is one of the friendliest and welcoming I have experienced in a 'local' with the landed gentry jovially rubbing shoulders with farm hands, rock stars with engineers and retired villagers buying drinks for travelling workers like myself.
Then there's the food! On the first stay they held a steak and cheese night with a high quality abundance and variety of both with selected wines with each course. Simply a stunning gastro-evening but still good value. The second stay was more 'regular' but starters and mains were all superb as was the ale!
Finally, there's the owners. They are both great characters and yes they are posh but so friendly that they're not. You know when you've been 'Catkinned'!
We will be back!
