Probably the best food in the Norwegian mountains, prepared with care and competence. No-nonsense dishes straight from nature. The breakfast is a perfect start for a hike in the mountains. The hotel is on the top of Høvringen, so you escape a boring up hill walk before you reach the real mountain terrain. We enjoyed each day up there and will be back.

This is my first review - ever. Moreover, I am doing so while still being on my vacation. Two reasons brought me to do so, one- to thank all prior tripadvisor critics who thanks to them we found out about brekkeseter and, second - to pay my little share of helping future readers to make the same decision and visit brekkeseter. Brekkeseter (the main house and all cabins) blend wonderfully with the magnificent wild scenery of Hovingen (a must place to visit in Norway!). The Cabins are well separated from one another and give you a sence of privacy whille still maintaining the feeling of a small and warn village. The cabins all look stunning. Once we entered our cabin our girls couldn't stop smiling, they felt in a fairy tail. We had both dinner and a breakfast, and the food was just excellent. We also were deeply impressesd by the warm and kind hospitality. All together our stay at brekkeseter left a highly authentic and unique impression on us. Well done!

This year was my eleventh time visiting Brekkeseter. One may ask why I have kept coming back every year and really, it’s a simple answer to that question. First of all, the surroundings are amazing. You can dine in the restaurant and yet at the same time gaze at the spectacular view of mountains. Speaking of dining -- the food is exquisite. The best meals that I have ever eaten, I have been served on Brekkeseter. Whether you rent a room or a cabin, you will be surrounded by a lovely atmosphere created by the two fantastic hosts: Kari and Bjørn. They are very welcoming and friendly -- always at your service. In addition they are both excellent cooks. A taste of Norwegian tradition and multiple choices of different activities, Brekkeseter truly is a fairytale. With an endless list of opportunities, you are allowed to create your own adventure as well as you may relax and connect with your inner self. I’ve had the time of my life here and I will keep coming back every year, as long as I live. In conclusion, Brekkeseter is a place beyond imagination -- only the best place in the world, and the closest to heaven that you’ll ever be.

I can only confirm the positive feedback of other reviewers. The cabin was comfortable, cosy and warm. The owners were very friendly and helpful. We were there early season and had a free upgrade to a larger cabin.
I really recommend the place, I had a great time there, thank you for that Kari & Bjorn!

We chose Brekkeseter on the basis of the warm reviews it has attracted on Trip Advisor because it's pretty much the only source of information on these small hotels. That's a big mistake on the part of Norwegian tourism because places like this offer some of the best travel experiences you can have. As you would expect in the mountains, its decor is quite spare with wooden floors and furniture, some decorated with traditional paintings, but it's charming none the less and the open fires, mountain vistas and huge warmth of the hosts Kari and Bjorn make the place seem as comfortable as you'd wish. There's a sauna and steam-room and in the grounds a lovely little wood fired sauna. Added to that, the food was superb. Rather than haute cuisine it's soups, salads, meat and beautifully cooked veg and of course plenty of fish; fresh, cured, smoked, pickled.... whatever it was it was good quality, often locally sourced and cooked perfectly. The Norwegian buffet on Easter day was outstanding. Try the Rommegrot sweet porridge if it's on offer, eaten with cured meat. If you want to get a genuine glimpse of Norway at leisure then this is one of the best ways to do it. Expect though to be in a tiny minority amongst the locals, something which we thought was to its a great advantage. We only went for the cross country skiing, but we got a lot more than that - what we felt was an authentic experience of Norway.

Room Tip: They have family log cabins in the grounds or rooms in the main building. All the rooms seem to hav...

Not knowing where we were going to spend the night in Hoveringen we skiied to do the door of Brekkeseter for a single night's stay on our way out of the mountains - and what a find! It was fantastic! The building itself is 'olde worlde' creating a very homely feel and the owners are very friendly and attentive. The food was amazing - everything on the plate was exquisite. The beds were super-comfortable. The lounges were lovely and there was even a sauna and tools for preparing skis. I can highly recommend Brekkeseter. It is also only a few minutes walk to the bus stop to get the bus to Otta train station.

We have stayed at Brekkeseter at multiple occasions. The place is just fantastic. Kari and Bjorn as hosts make you feel at home. We prefer renting one of the log cabins for the entire family, but have also stayed as a couple without children in one of the hotel rooms. The atmosphere is fantastic in the log cabins where you can choose between spacious cabins with multiple beds, or smaller cozy cabins with only room for two. They all have fully equipped kitchens as well as fireplaces. You can choose wether you want to make your own food, (can be purchased in the food store nearby, open every day) or dine in the restaurant. The view from Brekkeseter is gorgious giving you true feeling of space, as well as being on top of the world.
Bjorn and Kari are by far the best chefs for tens of miles and you will not be disappointed. The wine list is extensive and not expensive.
Activities you can choose between are multiple, and by far the best alternative is a mountain hike. Ask for hiking tours from Bjorn. Brekkeseter is ideal both for children as well as adults. Children will enjoy the freedom of playing outdoors without any dangerous boundaries. You may borrow mountain bikes, go ice skating on the skating rink, horseback riding, cross country skiing, etc etc.
