“Amazing building but oppressive atmosphere”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 March 2013

The haveli is beautiful and very interesting to visit however the staff seemed to follow us around everywhere and ask too many personal questions and as we seemed to be the only guests there, this was just too much. We were surrounded by 3 staff members who were watching us eat. Back in our room after dinner, we didn't feel like coming out again to sit in the patio as we feared being pestered again. I also had to ask repeatedly to get our passports back. The electricity kept cutting off and in the end we ended up packing our suitcases using our torches as the room was dark. Also, the massive step from the room to the bathroom was quite dangerous in the dark!

The staff at the reception and in the restaurant are really not welcoming and not friendly at all compared to the hotels we have been across Rajasthan. The rooms are very noisy and the electrical equipement is very old. They do not have wi-fi although the cost of rooms are really high compared to the other hotels in the area. I really do not recommend this place.

The hotel is very nice, beautifully decorated, with great rooms. The staff was otherwise quite friendly, but then they tried to charge 5 times normal price for a bottle of water. Dissapointing.
Would not visit again.

It sure is hit-or-miss when it comes to rooms at Grand Haveli! The hotel itself is stunning, but our room was very dark, with not so many details and decorations. We did have a big bathroom, and it was a nice stay, but others in our group had beautifully decorated rooms.

Food was good, be it a bit expensive.

We stayed here with a group of 8 fellow travelers (horse-riding across Rajasthan) on Christmas Eve 2012.

The property is interesting and the decoration of the haveli is pretty - there's a water-filled courtyard in the center - but the amenities are lacking. Our room was noisy (close to both the street outside and the courtyard inside), the bed lumpy, the electrical supply unreliable, and the bathroom queerly low-ceilinged with faucets that didn't work and only intermittent hot water. Several of our traveling companions had no hot water during their stay.

The food at the attached restaurant was dismal. The staff seemed to have difficulty with English; one guest asked for hot water for tea and was brought an unopened bottle of water that had been heated in a microwave. Since there are many foreign visitors who stay here, this could be a problem.

Nawalgarh is one of my preferred cities in the region (more than the neighboring well known Mandawa), unfortunately, you won't have much choice for a hotel.

The Grand Haveli is for sure a beautiful heritage property, however it is not what it is advertised on its website : "Every room has a traditional Jharokha where one can relax with the rays of sun filtering through the coloured gasses. All bedrooms are looking out over the old residential houses in the surrounding." - ours had no Jharokha, and was just overlooking a backside street with a couple of houses in a poor state.

But more disappointing was the lack of hot water... although they repeatedly told us to let water run for 10 minutes before it turns hot, after 45 minutes our water was still cold... and we had to leave.

Good diner on the roof top - average breakfast in the dining room on the ground floor.

This is a beautiful hotel and the food is good. Waiting staff are also nice. But beware - no hot water (not such a big problem); and, more serious, if you book travel through them it will be an overpriced disaster. We spent 8 hours (!) on the road being taken to a place which is actually 3 - 4 hours away. The hotel manager told us that the driver spoke English and knew where we were going. It was only once we were well underway that we realised that neither of these were true. We also paid for a comfortable air-conditioned car with seat belts and ended up in a rickety old jeep.
The previous day we booked to drive around several villages and once we go to the first were told that the driver would go no further unless we paid a lot more.
And the day before that the hotel manager had supposedly booked for us to eat in another hotel, then sent us on an (again) overpriced rickshaw ride. When we got there discovered that the hotel had not phoned, by which time the rickshaw driver had disappeared, leaving us in pitch darkness in the middle of nowhere. So ... not such a great experience.
