Mahabalipuram is full of monuments and it will not long time to see but you must have very good guide and please do not visit in summer otherwise you will appreciate. most of monuments are rock cut. all monuments are in close vicinity, so you can cover in 3-4 hours.

Has beautiful stone sculptures and provides a peak into the distant past. Dont miss to take picture with the huge stone elephant. The beach is treacherous and I agree with the warning posted. Try to hote a good guide even if you are a local. The history is simply mindboggling. Please avoid going in the hot sun as there are no shelters.

Age-old monument, lovely historical stories/myths behind the monuments. Amazing rock-cut carvings and temple, just along the sea shore. Well maintained, a must-visit while in Chennai, spend a day travelling to Mahabalipuram.

One should never miss this site if you are visiting Chennai. It is very difficult to see all the attractions there without a guide. The reason being they are not properly marked. I hope the Archeological Survey of India will do something in this regard. A must see here is the "Five Rathas" exquisitely carved in huge rocks more than a thousand years ago. Krishna's "Butter Ball"
(the huge round stone) is staying there defying gravity!!. No details are there at the sites so the visitors are requested to read in advance and visit the sites or take a good guide.
There is a beautiful beach but unfortunately littered with plastic bags. The visit will not be complete without climbing the old light house. You can enjoy a marvellous view of Mahabalipuram from this.

A great point is that this interesting place is so close to chennai...at about 1 hr driving distance and is a good tour for half a day. If you are fond of monuments, you will find a lot here to appreciate. An ASI protected town, there are many sculptures, temples, and carvings from 7th Century AD. The Ocean is beautiful to see from the beach side.

But ASI still needs to work to make it all accessible for wheel chair. The sand paths are difficult at five rathas and ramp is too steep.
