Spent a couple of days exploring and wandering round between the sites. Be ready to wave off sellers / guides if you just want to go at your own pace.

Fascinating history well preserved. Have a guide explain Hindu history! Loved standing in front of Lord Krishna mural as he lifted up the mountain.

“Splendour in the open air museum”
Reviewed 2 April 2014

Mahabalipuram has a history with the Pallava dynasty and the king Narasimha who encouraged art and architecture. the place is teeming with local tourists and bus loads of school children during weekends.I did not opt for a guide because the scorching heat discouraged me to haggle. (DO NOT go in the summer heat). It has its splendour with its open "museum"- see the monolithic carvings- the Pancha Rathas sculpted in bas relief, Arjuna's penance, and the shore temple.
you can rest in the shade and watch children play around Krishna's Butter Ball.

Mahabalipuram is full of monuments and it will not long time to see but you must have very good guide and please do not visit in summer otherwise you will appreciate. most of monuments are rock cut. all monuments are in close vicinity, so you can cover in 3-4 hours.
