This is a part of the UNESCO site, Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram different from the others. Unlike the "Five Rathas," here you find rock reliefs that illustrate the Descent of the Ganges. Apparently a wise king begged Siva to force the Ganges to come to Earth and nourish the world. Like the other monuments, this intricate artwork dates from the 7th-8th centuries, but unlike the shore temples and the rathas, this has been protected from the elements by the cave-like setting. If you're checking this out, you're hopefully headed for the monuments, and you'll easily find this one. As others have suggested, if you decide to buy from local venders, do bargain thoughtfully - you'll have plenty of opportunity here.

This is a must visit place in Mahabalipurum. Very hard stone and the carving on the stone is too amazing. Very well maintained.

Good wall carvings, in good condition with great detail and scale. It is free and can be seen 24h/day, although I do suggest going in daylight ;) Like the Panch Pandovas, this is another monument with a misleading title, as it has nothing to do with Arjuna.
Touts here are ridiculous with their prices, I've heard them offer soap stone balls for 1500R to Western Tourists, and then 100R to Indians. Bargain hard people!
