I stayed here back in 1993 as a guest of the Taj Mahal Hotel Group. Now that I am on my own ticket, I wanted to return. On the hillside are tiers of self-contained cottages and about 15 quaint super-deluxe villas set on 88 acres of landscaped hilltop, situated on Sinquerim Beach, in North Goa, 45kms away from the airport. From atop the hill, in your warm and private villa you witness the drama of the waves crashing on the beach hundreds of feet below. Each room has its own private garden, a verandah and Goa's most exclusive view of the Aguada beach and its lush green valley and foothills. For long stays, you'd have to be a very rich hermit to live at The Hermitage at Taj Aguada in Goa, but what a retreat! I put this resort in the top 25 places of the world for its sheer location, even as I would turn a blind eye to its slightly run down status. But I am told refurbishment is starting soon. Each villa or cottage has a separate living room, a dining area, one, two, or three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a balcony and a private garden. These cottages and villas were built as a retreat for delegates during the 1983 meeting of the Commonwealth heads of state and was a favourite of Indira Gandhi. Margaret Thatcher stayed there in 1983 during the Commonwealth Conference. I think I have her room this time. I strolled the wind-swept beach for 3 hours, virtually empty save for some locals and a few sunbathers. I enjoyed dinner in the Beach House adjoining the village.Typical and delicious Goan food—Bekti Fish, Curried Prawns, Chicken, Curds, Naan, Chic Pea Curry...

This is easily one of the most beautiful properties we have ever stayed in. The landscaping around our 2 bedroom villa was exquisite - see photos.
Cons: The bathrooms are inexcusably outdated. Service is not comparable to other Taj properties like for instance the Lake Palace. The location of the villas is quite aways from the main resort, Golf carts were slow to arrive, service was slow in general. Food ordered through room service turned cold by the time it arrived to our room. The fitness center was really stinky, it smelt of some chemical. It was very hot, the airconditioning was only turned on when someone entered and by the time the room reached a decent temperature I had finished working out and was ready to faint from the heat.
We would still stay here again at 700+ a night that we paid, but only if we have a dedicated butler and a golf cart exclusively for our use. We could live with the outdated but functional bathrooms.

I was staying in aguada hermitgae when i visited goa with my family last year. It was a beautiful place with very nicely done up villas. we were about 10 people and before this never thought that we'd be able to stay together in our own 5 bedroom villa.
Its vicinity to the famous beaches like baga n to the market makes it even better.
The shack kind of restaurant gives a very goan feel.

We were members of a wedding party who had been put up at the hotel. We stayed three nights in a villa which we shared with two other couples. We were the only bedroom on the ground floor while the two other couples had bedrooms on the first. The rooms were very very basic with hardly anything to boast about. There was a bathroom, but it wasn't attached. You have to walk out of your room to use it. Another annoyance was that the villa only had one key which had to be kept at reception, which meant you either kept the villa open all day thus putting your belongings at risk, or you kept having to walk to reception to collect the key and return it.

The food was pretty poor. We were a stone's throw away from Fort Aguada, so we just headed there for breakfast which was 1000x better.

The staff were find, but there were one or two annoying ones who were always in your face. One even called us up on the phone a few times over some issue, which was quite uncalled for.

We had a pool just outside our villa which was a nice touch.

Overall, I would recommend this for large groups travelling to Goa who can't afford the fancier hotels.

We got married in that hotel, and stayed in one of the Hermitage villas for three nights. It was quite amazing! These villas were built for presidents of Commonwealth countries, so you can expect perfect relaxation, stunning views of North Goa, flawless service, and basically a great time. Food in Aguada is brilliant, but drinks are overpriced.
