This was my third visit to Japan but my first stay at a traditional ryokan. The hot baths, views of Mt. Fuji and wonderful traditional meals made it a great place to recover from traveling halfway around the world for a week of business meetings in Japan. Mt. Fuji was shrouded in the clouds on the first day, but on day two we had spectacular views. The area around the hotel has seen better days, but the hotel property is great. The staff was excellent and we usually had no problem with the language barrier.

Was initially unsure about the hotel as there were no recent reviews but had an exceptional stay.

Hotel Maruei goes by the name of Wakakusa no Yado Maruei. It is a good 10 to 15min mini-bus ride (provided free by the hotel) from Kawaguchi-ko train/bus station - pop into the adjacent tourist info booth to call for the mini-bus. The hotel faces a very quiet side of the lake, with the back of the hotel facing the mountains.

The Maruei experience starts upon arrival. We were ushered to sit in the lounge while staff prepared our room. There, we were served macha and a snack while savouring the lake view. We were then ushered to our room, 421, which has our name at the door. There, staff made us tea while explaining the services available.

The room was large and had a see thru glass wall at the rear where the in-room onsen tub, shower and toilet was - another toilet found by the main door. The room had a picture-framed view of Mt Fuji from the onsen tub. Simple but tastful, good quality furnishing throughout.

Dinner was served in the room. 3 rounds of many small dishes. Good fresh sashimi, sake, hot pot and even ginseng tempura. Staff came by with 2 rice balls for night snack. The lady boss followed just after dinner to greet us goodnight. Breakfast was just as colourful, albeit served in the dining hall downstairs.

The public outdoor onsens - Mt Fuji view or Lake view - had, again picture perfect views and warm (not scalding) water which made it very easy for those unused to hot onsen baths to enjoy. They, together with the observatory on 5th floor and the roof top viewing patio on 6th floor are one of the main reasons why people stay here. Non-Japanese who haven tried onsen would understand why its so popular here....after you tried it, especially after a long day walking about and nursing sore muscles.

Staff spoke a good splash of English and were always ready to assist, even if it meant trying hard to use English. Smiles all around and service made you feel like a king.

2 things though, (1) I wouldnt bet on the locally run hotel-town shuttle bus's schedule - I gave up waiting for a bus. Better off getting the hotel to arrange their own bus to take you back and forth the town centre (2) there is not much available around the hotel, except some old private homes, a carpark, a seemingly derelict wakeboarding shop and some boat moorings.

I would stay there again without any hesitation.
