You do get to walk through a very nice forest, the cave should be avoided by old, fat or tall people.
To be honest I was expecting the caves to be more extensive, but it was still worth visiting; it's always interesting to walk through a magma tunnel.
The cave is a natural lava flow tunnel underground. That bats make their home in the caves in summer is evident by the guano on the ground.
WARNING! If you are 1.8 m taller and above do not enter! Not unless you don't mind having to go on all fours to crawl through certain parts of the cave where the ceiling is very low and the ground rises. Before you say yes, note that while there are no bats in autumn and winter, their guano is still on the ground and with some natural ground water still dripping through the cave you might want to think twice before putting you hands on the ground or letting your clothes touch the ground as you will find its a mildly wet brown mess down there.
So, if I had seen any bats I would have given this a different review.
Paid for my Bat tour and met up with the guide (obviously my complete lack of naturist Japanese didn't help here) and proceeded on a 2 hr walk through the woods expecting to end up at a cave with bats in. Ohhhhh noooo, we ended back up at the centre, where I eventually found out that the Bats were hibernating and cannot be disturbed. Probably best to check before hand eh?
Anyway still had a great walk hence the 3 stars. Guide seemed very knowledgeable and very respectful of the environment. Great day out even if there where no Bats.
Wasn't sure what to expect but it's a small system of caves, didn't see any bats. The kids that were there were really scared as it's terribly dark in some areas and the floor is all uneven. If you small children with you or have mobility problems then I don't recommend a visit, you'll need to be pretty agile to get around, as some areas require kneeling and crouching to get through.
We took about 20 minutes to see everything. Glad we made the bus on the way back, would've hated to be stuck in this area for a few hours: food options are really limited (ice cream and some snacks) and nothing else really.
