“Fantastic, absolutely love this place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 August 2013

I stayed at the Red Lion with my bridal party the night before my wedding. Everything about our stay was completely perfect and I cannot express how happy I am that we chose to stay here. The staff were friendly and attentive from the moment we arrived until the moment we left and nothing was too much trouble for them. John, the manager is an absolute star, a proper old fashioned landlord and all round gentleman! We took three bedrooms, all of which were beautifully kept - extremely clean and comfortable. The staff and locals in the bar welcomed us all as if we were old friends. We had a lovely evening meal, there is a great choice and everything is great value for money. The food was fantastic! On the morning of my wedding the staff gave us a beautiful cooked breakfast and took care of everything we could possibly need, welcoming my family members and directing them along with my hairdresser, make up artist and photographer straight up to our room. And even doing their best to calm down a nervous and stressed out bride! Everything was stress free and easy and I was treated like royalty by all of the staff. The whole place is charming and beautiful and I will definitely be going back for a weekend with my husband!

Room Tip: All of rooms were beautiful and spacious. Room two is huge and absolutely charming. My only tip woul...

I stayed here alone for a couple of nights. The bars really are lovely, the beer kept perfectly, the food excellent (and plentiful!) and the rooms extremely comfortable. I really cannot recommend the Red Lion enough. I have been back there for a drink several times, and have always been made very welcome.Excellent!

Room Tip: Please book in advance, especially during the summer months.

This place is just lovely. If you want history and the feel of the real Kent then this is heaven. Room 2 is stunning; spacious, comfortable, fab decor with original Tudor fireplace and thick beams rising into a vaulted ceiling. Also the bed is huge and so comfortable i slept through the alarm clock.
Bathroom is different with traditional beamed walls spaced by lime plaster panels. For the moaners out there, yes the paint could do with touching up, but it is only 700 years oldish.
Also the floor does slop and there are uneven surfaces, but that just adds to the charm, as does the ghost that likes to rattle the bathroom door.
Down points, only two. The plumbing is a touch noisy but i am assuming that is to do with the saniflow type system that is needed because plumbing in a place like this is not really practical. Second point, there is no lock on the room door. Not a problem for us, quite like the idea of a trust worthy place, but i can imagine some people may be a little unhappy.
we only stayed one night but did not wish to leave. My parents stayed in the room next door and also had no complaints.
Breakfast was very nice. All freshly cooked and served by a nice lady. Found all staff very helpful.
When we go back, we have family in the area, then we will happily stay there again

We are a couple of experienced independent NZ travellers.
We enjoy the small village atmosphere and stay in the local pub if we can.
We stayed two nights.
This pub has it all.
1st. The building is 13th century. With some additives.
2nd. The room (room 2) was spacious, The bed huge and comfy.
Because of its age the floor sloped downwards to the door and bathroom.
This only added to the experience.
3rd. It has a real bar. Not like some with only a restaurant.
And each night we became locals and enjoyed their company.
Especially Margo. Thank you.
4th The staff, Emma, and the owner John are just the greatest.
They really know how to make you welcome.
5th. The food was yummy and freshly cooked.

Trust us. Stay here if you are near Wingham, near Canterbury.

Room Tip: Rooms 1 and 2 are the biggest
