This is our third time at Sokala. We return back here like so many tenants at Sokala because of the great location, and wonderful staff. The owner, Lawrance and his team take excellent care of us. It is like coming back to family.

Sokala Villa's provides a level of service that simply can't be matched by the larger resorts - a big thanks to Susan, Lawrence and the gang for making our stay so memorable...These guys will bend over backwards to help in any situation, and they are just as likely to stop for a chat when on their rounds...the rooms and equipment were also kept in top condition, and a fresh supply of linen was supplied each day. Aside from the service, The Villas' seclusion and Location are two qualities that are likewise hard to match anywhere in Rarotonga. If you are seeking a holiday as a couple or small group, on an island that embodies the word "paradise", then Sokala Villa's is a must. We'll stay with them every time we visit Rarotonga in the future (which is hopefully quite often!!).

We found information about Sokala Villas on the Trip Advisor website and with so many positive reviews we were confident in our choice. It turned out to be even better than expected. We were celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary and were looking for something special.
Our arrival at midnight after a long flight from Australia we were greeted by Lawrence who was most welcoming. He and Susan were so friendly and helpful throughout our stay. Susan knows the best places for shopping no matter what you want. The other staff (including the cat) were all very friendly and helpful.
Our unit was clean. well designed and beautiful. We had booked a lagoon view villa but received an upgrade to a beachfront with pool although the other units were different they appeared just as nice. All aspects of the unit were perfect for us - the lounge with its outlook over the lagoon, the small but useful kitchen (I did not go to spend my time cooking), the bed was very comfortable with an outlook to the motu and the bathroom fine. Lazing/eating on the deck or in the pool was very pleasant..
The location suited us well being a short stroll to several eating places, we particularly liked the sailing club just a few minutes stroll down the beach. Also in walking distance were local village shops and tourist shops. We hired a motor scooter (max speed 40km/hr) and used this for getting around the island. As the villas are at the end of Muri Beach it was extremely quiet with very few people walking past or on the beach.
Kayaks and snorkelling gear available from Sokala gave us many hours of pleasure on the lagoon.
We recommend Sokala to anyone wanting a really peaceful and relaxing holiday. We will never forget our 40th wedding anniversary on Rarotonga.

I just returned from Rarotonga and I had the greatest time. I stayed at the Sokala Villas for 2 weeks and loved every minute of it. The villas were modern, clean and very comfortable. Of course the pool topped it off. Nothing better than to sit at your own pool having the morning coffee. Even on a rainy day you can sit back and relax in the spacious villa without the feeling of being trapped in a room with nothing to do. The staff - Lawrence, Susan and Sarina go out of their way to make the stay perfect. After on week I got an upgrade from the Lagoon view villa to a beachfront because they had some work to do behind the bungalows. Personally I do prefer the Lagoon villa because of the balcony. But both types are great. Sokala and Rarotonga absolutely met my expectation and I can highly recommend that place if you are looking for a relaxing holiday in paradise. There are even a few bars and restaurants in Avarua if one would like to get a night out. But all in all bars and restaurants do close early so don't expect a lot of nightlife. The best way to get around and explore the island is with a scooter. Cars can also be rented but since there really is only one main road which goes around the coastline of Rarotonga (32 km) there isn't much need for a car. For the night out, there are buses running till either 11pm on weekdays or 2am every Friday.

This was our first visit to the Cook Islands. We also revisited French Polynesia [Tahiti and Moorea] during this 6 weeks holiday. We suggest that the Cook Islands, though not as ‘developed’ as some tourist areas of French Polynesia, are as beautiful with a charm and ‘innocence’ that is now missing from parts of FP.
We thoroughly enjoyed Rarotonga [and Aitutaki] and would like to return. The seascape is glorious, with long sand beaches fringing a beautiful and accessible lagoon. The local people are very welcoming and the Muri Beach area where Sokala is located would again be our first choice, though parts of the west coast are appealing too.
Sokala’s staff and management are genuinely welcoming, friendly and professional. Electronic booking was efficient with lots of surprise additional information forwarded with their responses.
Our beach front villa [#2] was exactly that, right on the beach. We stood on our deck with the water just below us, and the islets across the lagoon framing the reef. Eating breakfast and soaking up the view was memorable. Our own pool, set in the expansive timber deck, provided a luxury touch. Umbrellas provided shade and allowed us to move around to avoid too much sun but still preserve the entrancing views.
We paddled the kayaks and marvelled at the lagoon’s fish, colour and beauty. With restaurants and shops a short walk down the beach or main road, and with the local buses servicing the whole coastal region at the end of the private lane, Sokala’s location is perfect.
Sadly, however, the villa’s owners need to be made aware that the villa’s positive features are spoiled by negatives serious enough for us to decide not to stay again until substantial internal villa renovations are undertaken. The bed is comfortable and the bathroom acceptable. However, the whole living area is urgently in need of a major overhaul. The kitchen is small, well worn, and relatively poorly equipped. Although the heavy timber dining table is of an interesting design its two levels and unusual shape make it impractical. The timber dining area chairs are uncomfortable and unyielding. Only with the piling up of many cushions was it possible to create some comfort on the sagging lounge furniture. Window treatments are just adequate and detract from the potential of the villa. We would love to return once renovations have been undertaken.

Arrived at Sokala at 6am after a long flight from the Uk to be greeted by a smiling Lawrence. The villas were lovely and large and Lawrence, Susan and the rest of the team could not do enough for us without intruding on our privacy. Brill Location, really close to the lagoon but far enough away to remain private. Also I loved the small things, such as the bottle of bubbly we received and the free daily papers ( interesting when following the pacific mini games!!)

We used Trip Advisor to choose our accommodation and it was as good as the reviews lead us to believe. Large living areas, adequate kitchen and expansive decking. Fantastic location - can't fault it!

Definitely hire a scooter for the period that you're there. Do a tour early in your trip to find out local information. Take advantage of Sunday plated meals available in shops to try the local food. Go to the Saturday market in Avarua (don't buy the paua, it's not the same thing as in New Zealand). Do the walk across the island, the rooster at the top likes Mars bars. The RSA and the fishing club have the best prices for beverages.
