I have just returned from a week at Doxford House where five adults and two children were on holiday, the house was lovely but we naively thought a proper baby cot would be available not a travel cot. The baby did not sleep in it at all and spent the nights in her parent's bed which is not conducive to a relaxing holiday. We got the distinct impression that using the grassed area in front of houses was frowned on. We did this because the baby wanted to be crawling and paving slabs and pebbles are not ideal.
The holiday was lovely and the weather beautiful and showed Northumberland at its best, but I feel there was a little black cloud over a beautiful place.

I am sorry you were not happy with our cots, but we do state in the Information section that we can supply, free of charge, Babydan Travel cots. I am sorry that you had not noticed that and were inconvenienced.
Doxford Cottages sit in the centre of a 3500 acre private estate; we do ask that guests do not make a noise on the few square yards to the lakeside of the cottages. One can make as much noise as one likes on the rest of the estate!

We stayed for a week in July in Doxford House - a group of seven, two adults, our three teenage / almost teenage children and two of their friends. Firstly, the quality of accommodation was outstanding. We regularly stay in self catered cottages/villas on holiday, and Doxford House was amongst the best. The quality and range of fittings was excellent, and the layout of the house (with three different sitting areas) worked really well for our group. Secondly, the facilities of the whole Doxford Cottages setup were really good. We pre-ordered some food which was very welcome. Sue and John were very helpful. The two youngest boys (12 year olds) spent happy hours in the games room and on the games pitch. The whole group took a range of the recommended walks. An excellent place for a holiday in its own right. But third and finally, a great location for a broader holiday. Days spent on Hadrian's Wall, at Alnwick, on Bamburgh and Embleton beaches, and at Cragside, meant we had an excellent all round break. The only disappointment was that our neighbours saw red squirrels.... and we didn't, despite much effort. Next time perhaps...

We stayed as a family (5 adults, 1 small child and a toddler) in Doxford Cottage and were happy with the cleanliness and facilities. We arrived on a Friday. Just outside our cottage is a communal area in which we used on the Saturday when our neighbours were leaving. We used this area as it was a safe area for a 9 month to explore (as opposed to the concrete slabs in the patio area) and crawl. As the weather was superb we were all located there early afternoon (new people due to arrive from 4 pm onwards).

The male owner/caretaker made his presence known quite clearly in quite an ominous style, clearly not happy with us located in this communal area. At the point in which one of our party started to play boules with a 5 yr old (emphasis on age) he rudely interrupted this lovely family time, to state that ball games were not allowed and to use the area at the front away from where we all were. This caused great upset, particularly as we had paid a lot of money to stay and put a 'dampener' on out first day. The time was 2 pm approximately and no one had arrived next to us who would have been affected.
We would have considered people's privacy etc., and moved accordingly.

There was another incident where the couple next to us who left on our first day, kindly gave us their parasol (to protect the little one) as they no longer had use of it and we couldn't locate the owners/caretakers to ask for one. Our neighbour informed us that as they were leaving that the 'gentleman' expressed his unhappiness at this and that they shouldn't have done this.

I find this attitude extraordinary with regard to the luxury status of the facility and the cost to stay. This only added to the upset.

When we started to ignore the 'ogre like' presence we began to relax.

This was a special time for us as a family and although the facilities were good, the attitude and reception from the male owner/caretaker caused initial upset, then annoyance and anger. Feelings you should not have when on holiday.

We are very sorry that we didn’t meet your expectations for your family holiday. As you can see from our other Trip Advisor reviews your experience is not the norm.
We do have an excellent games field where adults and children can play football, use the trampoline or climbing frame. This is an ideal and safe place for children of any age to play and make as much noise as they like. There is also 3500 acres of fields and woodlands where guest may wander at will.
We do ask that the lake side of the cottages is to be kept quiet for the comfort of the other guests. I am sorry that this arrangement did not suit you, but it is for the benefit of all the guests staying.
Thank you for your kind remarks about the cleanliness about the cottage; we have many families and house parties who return year after year and who enjoy the peace and quiet that is Doxford."

Stayed in Fox Cover which was perfect for our needs. It was a spacious detached cottage with a conservatory and enclosed sitting out area near to the lake in this large country estate. All on one level with a walk-in shower and a bath, and it can be booked to be a twin bedded or a king-size double. Staying here was extremely comfortable and relaxing, and it also had a log burner which thankfully was not required, and a very large selection of books. Situated as the end cottage of eight it was also very quiet and yet other facilities such use of a computer, games room, access to over 100 DVDs as well as home-style frozen meals could be assessed or purchased from reception further into the complex if required..

Sue and John were very welcoming and kindly provided a bottle of wine, milk, honey and flowers to greet us on arrival. Fox Cover certainly well deserved its five star gold grading, and was the most spacious and comfortable holiday cottage for two we have every stayed in, Have already booked our next stay.

This beautiful part of Northumberland provides a large variety of things to see and do, and walks directly from the cottage was another bonus as was seeing the red squirrels.

Thank you so much for a superb holiday.

Room Tip: Choose the cottage most suited for your party needs and notify in advance any special requirements such as twin or double beds, non feather pillows etc

Swinney Cottage offers a perfect peaceful getaway. We visited with my elderly parents for a week's holiday and the Cottage was ideal for our needs and well worthy of its 5 star rating. The location is very quiet and central for visiting Northumberland attractions.

Both bedrooms has its own bathroom as well as the handy downstairs cloakroom. Each bedroom is at opposite end of the landing, ensuring privacy for guests. The Cottage is very spacious and extremely well equipped in all areas with a plentiful supply of tea bags, coffee, sugar, dishwasher tablets, washing up liquid, cleaning products etc.

It was a pleasure to cook in the kitchen, complete with everything one could require and more besides; all top quality.

We all enjoyed the log fire in the lounge one rainy evening, making the room lovely and cosy. The vast array of books were very welcome.

The cottage included easy to follow directions for several walks in the local area.

Room Tip: Swinney Cottage is not attached to any other property, making it a perfect choice for a tranquil holiday.
