My stay at the Solitudes B&B was wonderful. Carolyn and John, the hosts, are happy, friendly and above all very funny people. They took me to see all the wonderful sights the island has to offer for example water falls, hiking trails and the Native outposts. If one just plans to relax the lake is the best place to take a break. In the summer time you can go swimming or canoeing. The lake has a beautiful wildlife. I saw beavers, eagles and all kind of birds.
The house was built to host guests. And Rufus their dog is a very friendly and welcoming. The cooking is wonderful (I recommend the pancakes) and staying there is letting time fly by. I miss this place and I promise to come back!
Linus

Thank you so much, John and Carolyn and Rufus, for making our Manitoulin Island getaway such a treat. Your advice on things to do, places to go and where to eat made it easy for us to plan our days' activities. You have such a wonderful, peaceful place that you obviously love and we felt right at home immediately. The bonus was the Aurora Borealis in the "dark night sky" that you arranged one night. The breakfasts were delicious and gave us lots of energy for hiking and biking.

To stay with Carolyn and John is to experience hospitality at it's finest. It starts with the warm, friendly greeting at the front door and continues until the minute you are leaving with warm cookies in hand. Their beautiful home was built specifically to house b&b guests, right down to the warmed bathroom floor. Being right on the lake, at the end of a winding gravel road through beautiful farmland makes it a perfect place for a quiet retreat and definitely matches the name. A huge picture window with comfy seats to take advantage of the view of the lake becomes the perfect reading corner. Lots of outside seats with the same view if the weather is good. Delicious breakfasts, with the added bonus of early coffee. More food than you can possibly eat and plastic ziplocks that are offered to take the unfinished muffin/breakfast cookie on the road with you. I defy anyone not to be charmed by Rufus. Even if you're not a dog lover, this guy will definitely win you over. At the heart of John and Carolyn's success is their obvious love of what they're doing and those that they meet. They are truly open, genuine, caring and beautifully friendly people, Definitely the real deal. All of this in their first year of operation! Bravo!

We really enjoyed our stay at Solitudes! Carolyn and John were great hosts, and our room and the view of the lake were wonderful. Delicious breakfasts, too. Perfect location for Cup and Saucer Trail and falls at Kagawong.

We have been to Manitoulin several times and for the first time we decided to stay at a B & B while visiting friends. Our research led us to Solitudes and are we ever lucky that it did! It is an absolutely beautiful location, located on an inland lake and situate on 85 acres. The home is immaculate and John and Carolyn, the resident hosts, are lovely people, and the perfect hosts. The vista is magnificient as you eat and look out over Kagawong Lake thorough a gigantic picture window. We had an absolutely wonderful stay for 3 days and look forward to returning in the future.

We recently visited Manitoulin Island for our first time. When I plan a trip, I always do lots of research in hopes that everything will work out well but, in this case, our experience was far beyond anything we could have imagined!! Solitudes provided the perfect home base for exploring the island. From the warm welcome offered by John, Carolyn and Rufus when we first arrived to our departure 5 days later with a gift of freshly baked cookies, our every need was anticipated by our most thoughtful and gracious hosts. The house which is built on an amazing lakefront property was thoughtfully designed for a B&B with two delightful suites with private baths, and a spacious, inviting great room with every amenity imaginable (TV, movies, books, hot and cold beverages available, lots of information about local attractions, restaurants, etc.). To enjoy the fabulous view, there is a lovely sitting area and a deck, as well as a platform down at the lake. From our suite, we watched the deer that would come to graze every morning and evening (the other suite overlooks the lake). After a day of hiking and exploring, the luxurious bathroom with heated floors, and the comfortable beds were much appreciated. The breakfasts were unique, tantalizing and nutritious, providing us with a wonderful start to the day. Many thanks to John, Carolyn and Rufus for a most delightful introduction to Manitoulin Island. We're already planning a return trip!!

I think that you could find another beautiful place which is clean and comfortable but for us, the most special part were the owners and their hospitality. Carolyn and John are really amazing hosts, very sweet and carying. Carolyn's breakfasts are absolutely awesome. I like to try new places but I know for sure that when I go to the island next time, I will definitely book Solitudes; we had a great time there.
