Just returned home after a wonderful two night break at Low Graithwaite Hall. It is set in a peaceful location within lovely grounds - there were happy hens and ducks who provided the breakfast eggs. Caroline was very welcoming and friendly, couldnt have wished for more. The reception, dining room and lounge had been beautifully restored and were comfortable an welcoming. I had Room No2 which was beautiful and spacious - I was able to lie in a hot tub at the end of the day and look out through the window at a lovely view. Nice toiletries too. Not too keen on the coffee and tea provided in the room - would have preferred freetrade, but that is not a big deal just a personal preference.
Definitely a get away from it all location. No local pubs or restaurants which could be a problem, but friendly local taxi service if you do want to go into Hawkshead which is just 5 miles away (10 mins by car). I will definitely be visiting them again - I didnt want to leave.
Didnt realise was in Ulverston - shame isnt listed under Hawkshead - it was Hawkshead Tourist Info who had advised me about Low Graythwaite Hall.

We were looking forward to our stay at Low Graithwaite, the website promises a great deal and the reviews on Trip Advisor have been excellent. The owners are doing a great job of improving the hall, making it comfortable and giving it a modern twist. We stayed for 2 nights in Catbells. The weather had been very wet and the room smelt musty I would have liked to open the window but I was unable to. The bed was very comfortable, if unusually high but the bedside lights were at the absolute limit of my reach and it involved an unnecessarily amount of leaning and stretching each time I had to switch them on or off. I'm not tall (5ft 3in) which didn't help We were unable to get an acceptable signal on the television other than on ITV, we didn't complain at the time and it probably could have been fixed. The large fluffy bathsheets promised on the website had gone walkabout but the towels that we had were at least sparklingly clean and white. A problem for us was that my husband is over 6ft and found it very difficult to fit in the shower cubicle, it isn't very high and it is very cramped - very tricky trying to wash hair.  He just didn't bother showering on the second morning. The ceiling of the shower cubicle had both mildew and cobwebs adorning it. The window next to the lavatory which goes down to the floor and has a view of the road had a sheer curtains. The fittings in the bathroom are very average but very nice organic shampoo, body wash and Moulton Brown hand is soap provided. Breakfast times on the website are given as 8.30 to 9.30 am  but when we asked for breakfast at 9.30 we were told that 9am was the latest. My husband rises at 5.30am on each working day so we really appreciate a leisurely start to the day.I am making it sound horrible which it isn't but the experience that we had did not match the impression given by the website. I also suspect that the contributors to Trip Advisor had stayed in a different room - The bathrooms on the website look perfectly lovely which was a major factor in choosing Low Graythwaite - I mistakenly thought they would all be of a similar calibre. Perhaps the owners, if they have not already done so, should spend a night in the room.On the plus side Caroline is enthusiastic and charming, she is full of helpful information, the house itself is wonderful and had some delightful features. I would recommend the place but not the room yet - I'm sure some of the things that we found a problem are on their list of things to address. We ate locally at the Swan at Newby Bridge in the brasserie which was very good and the staff were charming and the following night at the Drunken Duck which is the other side of Hawkshead which was great. Caroline had rightly recommended both and also a local taxi driver to ferry us about who was lovely.

We had an amazing stay at Low Graythwaite Hall. The location is stunning, the drive into the grounds is breathtaking.

Caroline was an excellent hostess with a winning smile.

We stayed in room 4, which has a contemporary style with a traditional twist.

The breakfast was a real treat and set us up for the day.

Located a short walk from lake Windermere and a short drive from Griezedale forest, easy access to Hawkshead or follow the road to Windermere.

We would definitely recommend Low Graythwaite as a must stay.

My wife and I were recommended to stay at Low Graythwaite by a work colleague.

We like the lakes and have camped there many times and the opportunity to stay in some comfort and luxury was very tempting.

It is a beatiful place; quiet and tranquil and you can feel the stresses of the working week melt away as you make your approach. Giant topiary hedges, welcome you as you drive in, and add to the character of the place.

The rooms are all individual and delightfully decorated. There's none of that faceless - which hotel am I in - nonsense here. You could never confuse it with anywhere else. Its handy for both Newby Bridge and Hawkshead, where there are some good eateries, but the culinery highlight of the weekend is the breakfast. Clean and perfectly cooked full English, a plethora of cereals and juices.....heaven.
