Set in a cluster of renovated farm buildings half way up a mountain, this is a place for people who like complete peace. Dinner, served in a chalet a short walk in the snow from the rooms (all part of the fun of staying here) is good local mountain cooking, the wine list is good as you would expect. Our room was a suite with a beautiful mountain vIew (no extra charge), the kind of place you could stay in for weeks and write a novel. The spa is adequate but not exceptional. Our only criticism is the breakfast which was served in a strange room which doubled as an indoor golf range and was of mediocre quality.

The location of Mascognaz is remarkable, up a long track accessible only by tracked land rover or skidoo. The renovations to the old farm buildings have been carried out sympathetically but the designers have tried to cram in too many guests, resulting in our (deluxe) room being very small with non existent sound proofing. Given the exclusive description and price tag to match, this was a major disappointment. Increasing the number of rooms and guests has also severely affected the logistical side - i.e. how to get upwards of 20 skiers down the mountain to the ski lift at the desired time and back again at the end of the day, with a limited number of suitable vehicles and available drivers. When the hotel filled up, the spa also felt very over crowded. The food was variable - some nights excellent, others mediocre. Staff were generally amiable and amenable if a little under polished. Managers were in the main unresponsive and disinterested. Mascognaz could so easily be idyllic but sadly missed its mark on this trip - a case where early success has led to excessive expansion, which in turn has destroyed the magic that people originally came to experience?

Room Tip: Deluxe Room 9 (in Chalet Rascard) in one of the original buildings was very small with no sound proo...

I was slightly concerned when I booked this hotel for our family of 2 adults and 2 children; I thought its isolation would have made things difficult and since we could not ski this time due to my not perfect physical condition, I thought the week-end could have turned out boring.
It was on the contrary PERFECT!
The location is just fantastic. It's like living in fairyland; you really think that an elf will jump out from behind a tree when you take a stroll in one of the many paths around the hotel.
The hotel is not a hotel: it's an original alpine village from the XVII century, perfectly kept and converted into a luxurious, but very homely and not pretentious resort.
There is a central body, where reception, reading area, restaurants (2) and some rooms are. Facing the central body of the hotel, beyond a small valley, one reaches two more big chalets, 5 minutes away by foot. In this part, there are:
- more accommodation (we stayed in two gorgeous communicating rooms);
- the fantastic SPA (great jacuzzi and perfectly sized swimming pool, sauna, Turkish bath and water therapy, all possible treatments are available too - my husband can confirm that the masseur is excellent - he fixed his stiff neck and leg in 3 massages);
- the restaurant for breakfast only (so one does not have to walk outside early in the morning);
- the virtual golf room.
Transfers have been always perfectly on time, available whenever we needed it and, being there lots of snow, that was so much fun for my kids, but for us too! In 15 minutes, one can reach Champoluc which is a pretty small village with lifts to the Monterosa ski area at the end of it. We did not use it, but I know that the hotel accompanies skiing guests by mini van till the lifts. We took the lifts too and the ski area seemed very large and offering all levels of runs.
We chose to discover the area with the snow rackets. It was our first time and, thanks to super kind Luisella at the reception, we enjoyed a full afternoon with Gabriele, their alpine ski guide, who took us and his gorgeous San Bernardo dog Lucy, to one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen: just below the Rosa glaciers, 2k meters above the sea, after a very long and tiring climb in the fresh snow. It was all worth it!
When we got back for dinner, we were really surprised by the quality and quantity of the food in half board. Everything was delicious.
The day after we just stayed around the area. It was snowing and the landscape was magic. Kids played with the complementary sleighs after breakfast and enjoyed a nice swim after lunch.
So, time flew by because the place is memorable, service great, food excellent and the location offers much more than what one would expect.
My only suggestion to the already good staff would be to offer guests more warm options at breakfast and a wider choice of home-made cakes or croissants. Also, add some lighting options in the rooms beside the wardrobes. The atmosphere is really cosy, but where it's needed most, light should be there.

Room Tip: If you want to stay close to the restaurants and reception, ask for rooms in the central part of the...

The mix of a James Bond movie and a wintertale. An exclusive historica's location only reachable by snowscooter. Good skiing in The Monte Rosa area. Wellness facilities to get you completely warm again, ready for a nice diner. A perfect place for a romantic weekend off for sportive people who like authenticity and good food. I hope we go back again next year!

Spent a couple of days there just before New year's eve. The setting is incredible: a historic alpine village in the majestic side-valleys that surround the ski resort of Champoluc. You are in a fairy-tailish middle of nowhere - although 15-20 minutes of snowmobile through the forest will take you to the main ski area. The buildings have been nicely refurbished and the underground pool and sauna are a great treat for apres-ski (although a more 'old fashioned' alpine restoration of the hotel lobby and interiors, perhaps with some fireplaces instead of centralized heating everywhere, might have helped). Service is the only sour note: as written by others on this forum, staff try hard but they are not well trained and/or very competent. This lack will be mostly evident at breakfast, dinner (included in the 'mezza pensione' rate) and when you are in need of help (such as luggage transfer inside the village - ours trolleys were misplaced for several hours). Still an acceptable price to pay for the viewing pleasures that come while opening your room shutters in the morning...

I don't know if I should share the best kept secret in the world.... In winter you need a ski jet to get over there but once you are up int the mountains you can feel like traveled in the different time - no cars, no noise just the mountains and small remote village itself. Pure beauty!
Food, interiors are luxurious but without loosing authenticity and local tradition.
Great helpful staff, especially skidoo drivers with the love of speeding up - great fun!
Highly recommended place as long as you are not party animal as there is nothing around in next 6 miles!

My wife and I spent a romantic weekend at the Hotellerie de Mascognaz at the end of August. We came from London and chos HdM based on the recommendation of an Italian friend of ours.

We had a great stay, the service was both friendly and professional, and every member of staff was very helpful.

The location itself is amazing and very peaceful. We stayed in two different chalets, and both were great, very spacious, with a separate living room, and clean. We loved the SPA/pool with views of the Alps and Monte Rosa through the glass wall. We also enjoyed the food: my wife is vegetarian, and the restaurant was able to cater for her.

We would definitely recommend Hotellerie de Mascognaz, and we hope to go back soon.

Room Tip: Chalets near the SPA area are a bit quieter
