“beautiful surroundings, beautiful but rustic villas, so so service”
Reviewed 2 April 2014

beautiful surroundings, rustic (not elegant) but very beautiful villas, yes- ecothinking on the island!!! :-) , only outdoor showers, incredilby arrogant manager and sometimes unfriendly and poor service, not like a 5 star hotel (like they say on their website), phone cannot be used from room after reception is closed, dresscode at this nature space seems rediciolous to me- it is not a 5 star hotel and it should not try to be one!

A beautiful setting and excellent service.
But very over-priced - we spent nearly £300 (13,600 rupees) on drinks and the a la carte fish platter, in 3 days without going mad. Don't touch the mini-bar - a half-bottle of ordinary white wine was £25. People stay here for 3 days on average - we can see why at these prices.
Coloured Earths site was not exciting in mid-afternoon - the colours were very muted after rain.
Nearby Morne public beach has no sunbeds - so sitting there for 3 hours is enough.
And the security guard failed to collect us at 4.20 am for the airport taxi - so we ended up walking from our suite through the rain in the dark with a suitcase. Not the best way to start a long day!

Room Tip: A garden view suite is perfect

We came here at the end of our honeymoon in August 2013 and it was the perfect end to our trip!! As you drive in through the gates your breath is taken away by the beauty of the gardens. As it was a quiet time of year for them we were very lucky to be upgraded to one of their garden pool suites!! This is not the sort of room we could ever normally afford to stay in, but it was just incredible!! Our room was huge looking out over the lake, and we loved having our own private swimming pool. The photos on their new website don't do it justice!! We also loved the outside shower! The staff are really lovely and nothing is too much trouble. As we were staying for over 3 nights we were also given a complimentary massage which was so good I booked in for another one on the last day. I also enjoyed a yoga session - just the most magical setting to do it. You could spend the whole time just relaxing by one of the swimming pools or enjoying the magnificent gardens and the incredible views over the ocean. But hire a car - you are not far from the beach or the national park and the Rhumerie at Chameral is definitely worth a visit (best food we ate on Mauritius). The only room for improvement was dinner which could be a bit hit or miss to be honest. Also be aware that none of the prices include tax.

Room Tip: All the rooms are unique and charming. If you can afford a pool suite they are incredible!!

On this our second visit to Lakaz Chamarel we were delighted to be offered an upgrade on arrival. Our sea view suite with private pool offered such luxury and comfort that it was hard to drag ourselves away to explore the island ( we had hired a car- which I recommend ). Intermittent rain brought welcome relief from the heat and added to the tropical birdsong a throaty chorus of frogs.
Breakfast is leisurely and delicious. Coffee is very good and there is a wonderful array of fresh fruit some of which is picked on site. Delicious 3 course dinners are accompanied most nights by live music ( we were fortunate to hear traditional Sega on one night and a very fine jazz pianist on another ). The menu changes nightly depending on availablity of fresh produce and the imagination of the talented chef. This is not buffet style eating.
Managers Renan, Warren, Peggy and the entire staff are fabulous. The enthusiasm, vision and love with which the owners have approached the development of this beautiful piece of land is apparent everywhere. Le Morne beach, a short drive away is in my opinion the most beautiful part of the island's coast. Snorkelling at sunset, an outdoor shower ,a fine al fresco supper, a rum and coffee at the bar, a brisk walk up the hill and a delicious night's sleep on fine linen. Sound good ? Lakaz IS very very good.

Room Tip: The suites are completely fabulous but require a steep walk. ( there is a silent electric buggie if...

After a week in a beach hotel in the north we were happy to see the southern part of Mauritius and the nice landscape it has to offer. The Lakaz Chamarel really can be described as paradise - everything is just great - service (the manager Warren and his team do a great job!), location and the special feel it gives you by just being there, surrounded by nature. And the food is to die for - breakfast and dinner - is of good quality and always freshly made with a selection of local dishes. There's also a lot to see and do around the Lakaz Chamarel, the next beach (Le Morne Public Beach) is only 15 minutes away. We recommend renting a car as the hotel is quite far from a center or beach and you don't want to spend so much money for taxis to drive you around. Unless you want to enjoy the Lodge and if you have a nice room. We had a standard room what we definitely don't recommend - spend a bit more and get at least a superior room. We were aware that standard rooms are not luxury but we found it to be too basic as we still paid enough for it. The only good thing was the outdoor shower. The difference between the room categories seems huge, so your money is better spend in a superior room or even better a garden or sea view suite with the own pool. Besides the room everything else was perfect - we definitely will be back the next time in Mauritius!

Room Tip: Don't take a standard room - this is really basic and it's worth spending a bit more for at...

Wonderful wonderful place to stay. The only thing I didn't like was the journey there. We arrived at night time and left very early in the morning, both times in the dark and the twisted roads leading to the Lodge made me feel very travel sick, probably because I had nothing to focus on.
The lodge is beautiful and full of character. We had a hut/suite with our own pool which was very nicely decorated and very secluded and quiet. I loved it.
The staff were brilliant, kind, caring and considerate. The food was good.
It's an amazing place to stay. I can't fault it.
I would highly recommend it.

Room Tip: Look out for special offers and get the best you can. All the rooms looked amazing though be they sm...

For the 2nd time we visited Lakaz Chamarel and were warmly welcomed by Warren and Peggy and other staffmembers.
All the personnel is so friendly and helpfull.
Our suite Dame Créole with a small private swimmingpool is overlooking the hotelgrounds. All rooms are separate houses all over the ground and they are all different and lovely.
Diner and breakfast are served on the terrace near the reception and luckily there is also a covered place, cause it might rain sometimes:)
All in all it's a very special and lovely hotel. We've never seen anything like this. And we surely will be back!
