Cefalicchio Bed & Breakfast
Reviewed 5 July 2014 via mobile

Ok, we were booked originally into a place just up the raid from this house but walked out because it was not what we expected.
So we cold called this place, we were shown around, from the minute we arrived we could tell it was perfect, professional and attentive staff, the rooms were amazing very antique but also comfortable, clean and prepared to the highest standards. I could bore you to death about the reasons to stay here but I won't. Good service, excellent restaurant, not to mention the home grown wine (which is the main business of this place). A great find a real gem of a place, we were a family of four two young kids, worked well for us but I could imagine it also being absolutely perfect for couples of all ages too.

We stopped in Puglia for dinner, beautiful town, and decided to stay the night. Luckily we stumbled upon Cefalicchio! What a great find the accommodation was wonderful and the property is out of this world. When we awoke early in the morning we enjoyed coffee on our sun drenched deck followed by a walk thru the vineyard and a wonderful breakfast. We then purchased some of the incredible wines grown and bottled on the property. I could of stayed there for days!

Cefalicchio Country House is located in a garden enclosed old masseria which was once the centre of a big almond farm, now converted to biodynamic olive groves, vineyards and productive gardens which supply the kitchen, cellars and house flowers. A villa, in the Umberto style and now over a century old, was constructed atop the masseria with a clever architectural integration that makes the house's evolution not quite immediately apparent and very intriguing if you love old buildings. Its draw-cards multiply when you enter, and the furnishings, combining the antique and quietly quirky, will light up your imagination as do the interesting objets d'art, prints and paintings, and the casually available books in Italian and English. More books and periodicals on wine and food reassure you of awaiting culinary and oenological surprises. Vintage Russian and Greek volumes, as well as old artisan pieces say "There is a story here - you work it out." Stefania, who helps to run this lovely place with her quiet enthusiasm, intelligence and dedication, will tell you all about it. The staff are equally as helpful and in 2012 an highly committed Israeli chef and sommelier, Michal Levy, will talk to you informatively and with inspiration about the estate's own wines and local produce she tries to use predominantly in the kitchen. She can chat confidently to you of good cooks whose food she knows in other Puglian locations nearby, or further afield if you are visiting other parts of this region which is as rich in food culture and specific traditions as any other in Italy. She is highly informed about restaurant scenes and renowned chefs from New York to Melbourne. This is a place to stay for those looking for rural seclusion with a special difference and quick access to places of interest. We stayed here to be able to visit Federigo II's intriguing Castel del Monte. Privacy, quiet hospitality, unique cuisine, and style with difference are the hallmarks of Cefalicchio Country House. As a guest you get the run of the house - feel like a quiet bottle of wine on the upper terrace as the sun goes down? Rooms vary from the ample suite where the style of the house continues, to the more modest in terms of appointment and cost. All rooms are equally comfortable. The staff are casually friendly, but 'correct,' highly informed on local attractions and culture, and dedicated to their work and the house itself. This house was a memorable aspect of our three week visit to Naples and Puglia.

Room Tip: Any, depending on your budget. Neither rooms nor suites are at all expensive. All are quiet, but t...

From the moment we arrived we were made to feel especially welcome, just like arriving at a country house! We had not found it easy to find our way in the dark & it was lovely to arrive and be greeted so warmly.
After settling into our room (the suite was delightful), we had a fantastic dinner with charming service. All the dishes were explained by Michal the lovely lady chef and the food exceeded our expectations. Everything was totally delicious, including the wines specially chosen to match the food. We were already looking forward to another night on our return (which was equally good). We were 2 couples on our way for a walking holiday on the Gargano Peninsular & stayed a night on our way & another on the way back. It's a beautiful spot with views over their own vineyards but the best thing was the quality of the service which we all found outstanding. We were also very grateful for the efforts made to arrange tea & breakfast for our early start. I would certainly recommend the hotel.

Room Tip: The master suite was fabulous. Worth upgrading to a superior double rather than a basic double as it...

This is a nice country house, inside vineyards and olive trees, in an old historic house. The place is very pleasant, quiet, elegant, far (3 km) from the city, in the region of north Puglia, where it is possible to visit (worths!) Trani and Castel del Monte. There is a nice restaurant, with a dedicated chef, and the breakfast is served in the garden. The negative point: the shower is too small, and there was a small amount of water for shower, alternating very cold and very hot water. It was really terrible, not compatible with a 4 star hotel. We complained after first night, they said it was solved, but is was not. A bad experience. They compensated with a discount in our rate, but this was not enough for the inconvenience. They should be worried about a basic structure like that.

This beautiful country house used to have a soul: welcoming and nice owners, family like atmosphere, fantastic cook and homemade pies and cakes every morning.
My second visit was disappointing; the place lost its soul. The condition of the rooms is such that it looks as if no control is made when a client leaves: missing bulbs, non functional A/C, missing plugs, shower falling on your head etc. The new reception manager does not seem to be concerned, blames the previous customers and talks a lot without having things under control.
The new chef runs the restaurant without any idea of the extraordinary resources of local food, one of the things that make Puglia a marvellous place to stay: the menu for dinner is imposed and does not contain specialties of the area, no choice for breakfast either; I had to ask for bread! On top of it, the restaurant is outrageously expensive, considering the average quality and price of the fantastic restaurants in this area of Puglia.
Marketing techniques seem to have taken over the place and what made Cefalicchio country house a place you did not want to leave is gone.

Dear guest, I am really sorry that your stay in Cefalicchio was not as expected. Altough we work hard to make our guest feel at home, it may happen sometimes that we fall short of the high standards we set ourselves. If this has been the case, we apologize. One thing, however, did not and won't change: Cefalicchio is, as you recall, a family house firmly rooted in one of the best Apulian spots.
You may have not appreciated it but our restaurant depends today on our own products much more than it happened once and it will increasingly do so. Not all chefs are able or willing to work woth seasonal, homegrown foods: fortunately our chef is. I would be really glad to see you back in Cefalicchio and invite you for dinner: you might even change you point of view. Nicola Rossi, owner.

A beautiful old home full of architectural history without "modern" renovations. To wake up each morning looking out over the country through enormous glass doors leading onto the verandah was such a highlight for me. The location of the house was perfectly suited for visiting the areas I wanted to see in the north of Puglia. During a sick spell I spent two days by the pool being pampered by the staff which was wonderful. A morning walk aroiund the property was special and a great start to the day. The staff were excellent and could not do enough for me. Another highlight of course was the wonderful restaurant and every meal I had there was memorable.
