We have stayed at this hotel every year for 5-6 years, as it's in my wife's hometown. Certainly, it has a lot going for it - a wonderful location on the banks of Nanhu, next to an entry to the charming parks, a lovely spacious lobby, generous breakfasts, and nicely landscaped grounds roundabout.
The hotel still represents good value, at 320RMB a night, but the rate keeps going up (started from 180 a few years back), while the fabric of the hotel deteriorates. Like many such hotels in China, it is not built using the best materials, and has suffered from heavy use. The rooms already have the traditional musty smell of provincial Chinese hotels, and the ingrained scent of tobacco.
It is not, however, a 5 star hotel. The list of shortcomings from that ideal is long - no heating in winter (bring warm clothes), unheated swimming pool, some charming attempts at western food, and newspapers that are always 2 months out of date.
It is the only real option to stay in in town, and we are grateful that it's still there.
