“Adequate but nothing spectacular”
Reviewed 30 August 2013

This was the main hotel form my stay in Austria.

A fairly typical hotel for this area, friendly staff, clean rooms etc

What let it down was the uninspiring food, very bland, and as often the case on the continent lacking in vegetables (they obviously don't believe in 5 a day). Also beware you may be offered coffee at the end of your meal, the impression being it is included but it isn't, you have to pay for it.

The other let down was while there is a bar area, there is no lounge area to congregate and socialise in.

SO adequate for what was needed but could have been better

A pity that a potentially lovely position overlooking the lake is spoilt by a busy road passing in front of the hotel. Nevertheless our fourth floor room with a balcony had stunning views although sleeping with the window open is something of a problem with the morning traffic which seems to start early and is continuous.

Our room was OK, if a little austere but we were slightly puzzled to find that rooms with walk in showers, necessary for the disabled, were situated on the top floor necessitating any evacuation by those less able in the event of fire, meant leaving by the only staircase down four floors (as of course the lift would not be usable).

The hotel had no lounge and although the restaurant was pleasant enough, some meals were rather spoilt by the smell of the smokers in the adjacent bar wafting across. A pity because the food was good and the service from the attentive staff of a high order. In fact nothing was too much trouble for them.

Altmunster itself was slightly disappointing with not a lot to do. particularly on wet days. Short walks along the lake side are possible and round the village itself with the church particularly worth seeing. There were about four cafes, one of which seemed to be permanently closed, another rather strangely which closed for lunch (!), but a third opposite the church was well worth a visit and we had a nice lunch there. A boat trip on the lake, particularly the one which takes you on a circular trip, was very enjoyable.

Probably a tow or three days would be enough to take in the village and the surrounding area.

We really enjoyed being in the Alpen hotel in Altmunster. It is close to the lake. The staff were very friendly. The food was very good & well presented. The view from our room on the third floor was excellent even in the rain !!!! My only criticism was there was no lounge to relax in.The only place to sit was in the smoking area of the restaurant or outside where there were plenty tables & comfy chairs but not much use in the rain.!!!!!.We had good trips to Salzburg & Vienna although the Vienna trip made for a very long day.Gmunden was lovely as was our sail on the lake.A trip to Haalstaat was very much appreciated & the visit to St Wolfgang was great as we had been there on holiday 4 years ago.Back to the hotel & I must say our room was immaculate. So well done the hard working cleaners.

Room Tip: A room overlooking the lake has wonderful views. We had a super balcony too. It was a little bit no...

The hotel is situated right in the centre of Altmuenster which is a picturesque little village. Our hotel room overlooked the Traunsee Lake and the mountains. It was truly stunning! The hotel staff were really friendly and helpful. Hotel room was adequately spacious, clean and even offered free wifi. If I was to be pickey then there was no tea/ coffee making facility in the room. But I wasn't too worried about it.
My husband and I paid for half board. The breakfast was excellent with good choice of food and drinks. Again, staff were really friendly. The evening meal was a 4-5 course event and the food was
very good. Food came out quickly but we were not rushed between courses. On Sunday we got presented with a gala meal which was a 6 course dinner. We couldn't fault any of the meals throughout our 5 day stay. One slight criticism, we didn't get offered drinks after our first round which we got almost immediately after arriving at the table.
Hotel also hires road bicycles which we made full use of during our stay. There is many bike routes around and plenty beautiful places to see.
Overall we really enjoyed our stay in the Alpen Hotel and would definitely recommend it to anyone.

We stayed for one night just after Christmas and enjoyed the hotel and Altmuenster.

The room was well appointed and very very clean. We were only on the 2nd floor so the view wasn't great but it was overcast so we wouldn't have seen much anyway. Beds were very comfortable and had great duvets. The bathroom was spotless and had tub with shower.

The one real negative thing for me was the young woman at the front desk. She was seemed annoyed every time I spoke with her. I dealt with her during checkout the next day and again I really felt she didn't want to deal with us. It is rare that I comment on someone like this but her attitude really had an impact on the experience.

Room Tip: Try getting a room on one of the higher floors.

Lovely hotel, stunning views of lake traunsee and the mountain. We were on the third floor and had breathtaking views of the lake - the room was spacious and comfortable. The staff were friendly and meals were excellent - definitely recommend.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the mountain and lake

A warm welcome from this beautifully located Hotel, with superb views of the lakes and mountains convenient for many sights and tourist destinations. The room was large and comfortable with superb lake views. The meals were exellent with a range of options of both international and regional cuisine well cooked and presented.
The staff were exemplorary and were very helpful (eg rapid response to need for extra pillow and a special rate postage stamp)..
The inhouse Sauna fascilities were a welcome back up but were not used by us as the local activities and walks were so good that we didn't have time for them. The Hotel was in excellent condition and very neat and tidy. The nearby Church was very attractive and well worth a visit, the local shops and supermarket are certainly adequate for general tourist needs The railway station is a little over one Kilometre away and has a regular service to Linz from where excellent services by clean fast regular services are available.
