We had read the reviews of the inn before going and thought it couldn't be that bad. Well, now we know to always believe the reviews that we read and go with our instincts. We were very pleased with the location of the inn. It is very close to the beach and lighthouse, just a very short walk. It is also across the street from a closely-mowed field, good for croquet or badmitton. Our room was quite lovely and how we expected it, but the ceilings were very low. In part of the room, my husband's head (6'1) brushed the ceiling. The best part of our stay was the ocean view from our room, which is why we chose the inn and because of the size of our room. While we did have an ocean view and enjoyed having a deck to view it from, the deck was not private as promised. The "privacy" of the deck was that it was seperated from the area belonging to the next room by a bench placed in between the two areas. We were pleased that there was an internet connection available and a large video and cd library available for use in our rooms.

The downside to our stay was certainly our hostess. We fully agree with the previous reviews that it feels like they did not choose innkeeping as a lifestyle but as a way to earn income. The hostess was very chilly and uninterested in interacting with any of her guests. Recommendations for anything were like pulling hen's teeth. The common areas of the inn were not very common. We were unwelcome in most of the first floor and the lights were kept turned off. There was no definition between private and public space either. On the first floor, the owners belongings were everywhere (mail, laundry, tons of shoes, clutter). You entered and exited through the kitchen, which was overflowing with personal items and especially shoes.

Even more disappointing than the attitude of the hostess was the breakfast. We stayed at the inn for five days and only one morning did we receive the advertised gourmet breakfast (dutch pancake with fruit). The other mornings we had eggs and bread (not even toast, just bread, and we had to ask for jam, and our only option was cheap grape jelly). We were so completely disappointed in the breakfast. We will not stay here again and would never recommend it to anyone looking to stay on PEI, unless they like to spend their time alone and don't like breakfast.

My husband & I spent 6 nights at the Beach House Inn for our honeymoon in August. The Inn has its pros and cons, but overall we were very satisfied and had a great time.

Pros:
The location! This must be one of the best locations to stay on the island. It is close to Cavendish but far enough to feel private. It is about 1/4 mile from a secluded beach and historic lighthouse. There were lots of peaceful places to go walking right from the inn.

Our room, the Dunes Room, was beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean. It had a lovely vew of the ocean. You could lie in the big red tub and look out the window at the water, very relaxing!

Cons:
We agree with the previous posters that the innkeepers were not friendly. Barry was friendlier than Benda, and recommended sites to see on our way to North Cape one day. But we did not get a warm or welcoming feeling from them. The woman that came to help out with breakfast (I forget her name) was the opposite - she was very friendly and easy to talk to.

Like a previous poster said, the Dunes Room is over the kitchen, and it got noisy starting at 6 am!! However, we bought a small electric fan after the first morning, and that blocked out the noise for the rest of the trip. I don't think this would be a problem with the other rooms.

The breakfasts were good quality, homemade food. However, it was not the gourmet food described on the website. In fact, 4 out of 6 days were eggs with sausage/bacon! Everything was fresh and well prepared, just not enough variety.

Overall:
Overall, we enjoyed our stay here and would return again. We felt the price was reasonable for the rooms. The hosts were not that friendly - but we were there on our honeymoon, not to socialize! - so this didn't bother us much. We LOVED the location and our morning walks around the inn.

Sept . 2006, our 1st trip to PEI and some friends had recommended the Beach House Inn. They had stayed there several years ago and thought it was good. We were extemely disappointed!!! The premisies were nice - we had one of the cabins, and the location is beautiful. Barry and Brenda were very unfriendly- Barry was better than Brenda but not by much. Breakfast was soso but not filling. Our cabin was without heat one night -- it was very cold that night - so we froze. When we mentioned it to Brenda in the morning -- she wasn't the least concerned. Barry did tell us he would have a look at it. It was fixed that evening -it was out of propane-- you'd think they would be checking the tanks with winter coming and all!! We weren't impressed with the 9 o'clock check in -- we had a late flight and hopped in the car and drove directly there to make it in time-so had had nothing to eat since noon. When we inquiried of Barry and Brenda were we could get a bite to eat -- there was nothing opened but a bar 1/2 hour away, so off we went back the way we had come.... I wouldn't stay here again or recommend it to anyone esle. I also spoke with the people who had recommend them in the 1st place and they said they found that Brenda was unfriendly then too -- but that Barry was very outgoing.

I think the other reviewers are being a bit harsh. We found Barry to be very outgoing, personable, and helpful. He put us onto a couple of great restaurants, particularly the Dayboat.
Brenda was indeed quiet, but I'd personally rather have hosts who are quiet than in your face.
Our room, the Dunes was quite comfortable, even charming, with a fabulous virew of the Northumberland Strait. Our only complaint about the room is that it is right over the kitchen, and you can pretty much hear every word, and every pot and pan being taken out.
For this reason we would probably pick one of the cottages next time.
The breakfasts were fine. No better or worse than other small inns.
As we toured PEI, we were hard pessed to find any other lodging that we would have picked over the Beach House Inn, especially from a location perspective. It really is tucked away at the end of a road, providing a quiet getaway from the overdevelopment of Cavendish. A short walk takes you to marvelous cliffside scenery and secluded beaches.

My wife and I recently stayed the first 5 nights of our honeymoon at the Beach House Inn. Unfortunately we were misled by their website. Although it is in a very beautiful location it was quickly apparent to us that the hosts, Barry and Brenda, are in it for the money.

They are not your typical BnB hosts who enjoy meeting new people. They charge exorbitant amounts for a variety of "features" (laundry,a "gourmet" packed lunch featuring "Five Alive"(!!), the "privilege" of eating dinner with them) - none of which we opted for. It seemed as though the people who did have the dinner got friendlier treatment, as if they had somehow "bought" the hosts' friendship.

There was no guest book in the bedroom - which says a thing or two. This is the only BnB that we have ever stayed at without a guest book in each bedroom. We can only guess that they removed their guest book after seeing so many negative comments in it.

The one time Barry talked to us, he suggested that we go to the Cavendish Boardwalk, and to avoid the North Cape drive (and all points Up West) . He bombarded us with all sorts of info about Cavendish, without once asking what we were interested in. To put that into perspective, we loved going up to North Cape - it was the best experience on all of PEI for us. We were on vacation, not looking to rub elbows with the tourists on the Cavendish Boardwalk.

At least Barry spoke to us, once - granted Brenda would tell us what was for breakfast each day before scurrying away . Mind you, she told us so quickly we didn't have a chance to object or ask for something else(which we wished we had). The breakfasts were a feast for the eyes - but not our tongues or bellies. I was shocked as Brenda wordlessly checked us out, and then paced back and forth watching us, as we packed our car to leave. It was as if she could not wait for us to leave.

For us personally, these hosts seemed very cold and unfriendly, ultimately overpowering the actually nicely put-together BnB. Never again! We feel that if the place was run by nicer folks, it would have been a blast! (ps- the 2nd part of our honeymoon on beautiful, welcoming Cape Breton helped heal us from this experience!!)
