“Great hotel but very noisy uncontrolled guests”
Reviewed 16 June 2012

Friendly and extremely helpful staff. Stunning views. Beautiful and very clean room. Amazing breakfast. Garage available. A great place to stay.
Incredibly steep and narrow road to get there. If you are not an experienced driver or your car is not powerful enough it can be difficult to get out....as it was for us. Unfortunately we had a bad night experience, as there is a small living room on the same floor we were and a group of loud people was staying there, drinking and laughing, over the permitted time (22.30). Even after asking them to be quiet, they went downstairs but didn't stop until 12.30 to be very noisy.....although it is not the hotel responsibility, a night receptionist would probably help in these situations.

We spend 9 days in february in colina faja, first of all print a map otherwise it is difficult to find and at the end of a very steep street. The hotel itself is in good shape, modern glass elements mixed with traditional architecture, guests share a living area with a pool table, comfortable chairs and a wood fire, they also share the breakfast table and are able to cook their meals in the quite well stocked kitchen. As there are only 9 rooms it is quite intimate. There is a small pool and a sun terrace facing south but in february it was mostly too chilly to use them. The rooms were nice with good beds, the bath linen needs some renewing though. Breakfast was carb oriented, cold and did not differ much, it did include fresh fruit and joghurt and on 3 days cooked eggs were offered.
It is a good base for tramps and hikes but you do definitely need a rental car to get around.
Overall we enjoyed the stay very much but would prefer to go back later in the year when it is warmer. And girls take a hair dryer :)

My friend and I spent one night at Colina da Faja during our holidays at Madeira.

The owner is very nice and it was a warm und uncomplicated welcome.
The little hotel is situated on top of a hill with a gorgeous view over the sea.
It has also a heated swimmingpool and you feel nearly taking a bath in the sea because it seems to fusion with the sea.
We had a very nice and modern room with a great size. Also the bathroom was very nice and you could see everywhere the personal charme of the owner familiy.
Unfortunately we could only stay for 1 night and had to leave very early in the morning even before breakfast time. But an individual breakfast was prepared for us. What a service!!!!
We can absolutely recommend Colina da Faja and the next time we will be on this great island, we will book for quite a few days!!!!
Thank you so much Carlos and until soon!

We stayed at the Colina da Faja for 4 nights. The room was very spacious, with a modern bathroom which was lovely. It had stunning views from the terrace. The hotel is away from the busier parts of Madeira and right on one of the main levados. A really quiet spot - the only disturbance was a cockerel from the house further below and even that seemed to rise late! As other reviewers have said, the track down to the hotel is steep - but we found it easily driveable with care. This is really a B and B as it does not do evening meals. You do need a car to get to the nearest restaurants (although you are welcome to use the kitchen to prepare meals if you would prefer). We liked Chicos - a really typical local restaurant serving good home cookling, in Prazeres. Overall, we found it extemely relaxing and welcoming and would definitely return

We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights and loved every minute.

It is located in a quiet Madeiran village with beautiful walks, coastal and mountain drives on the doorstep. There is a levada running through the hotel grounds. We are not big walkers, but we had a stroll along the levada about 0.5h each way - it was delightful.

The position of the hotel is truly amazing - about 500m above the sea level overlooking a beautiful valley and the ocean. All bedrooms have beautiful sea views.

Everything looks exactly like the photos on the web.

The building is beautifully designed with terraces on several levels all with great views. The rooms are great - very cosy with wooden floors, comfortable beds and good bathrooms. Our bedroom had french doors which opened onto the terrace; it was so lovely to open them every morning to a see the beautiful ocean. There are shutters on the windows, that kept the room very dark at night. It was great for a good night sleep.

The towels are changed every day and the beds are made.

Breakfast was very good with all the guests sitting around one big table. The guest can also use the hotel's kitchen / fridge and dining room to prepare / have drinks and meals, which was very useful. There were several nice eating places within an easy drive. We enjoyed 'O Pricipicio' in Faja da Ovelha and 'Chico' and 'Jardim' in Prazeres.

The swimming pool is beautiful - a little cool in November, but we still had a dip twice.

There are cosy common areas for reading, playing games or having a quiet drink.

The staff was very kind and friendly, always happy to help and answer questions. On my husband's Birthday we found a bottle of sparkling wine in our room, which was such a kind gesture!

You might see reviews on other Internet sites about the steep road leading to the hotel . The road was a little tricky - but only for about 100m. It was manageable and definitely worth it.

We can't wait to stay in Colina da Faja again one day.
