“An honest review of a fabulous hotel (despite the bug)”
Reviewed 2 September 2014

I am going to start by telling you that I have never wrote a review, but I feel compelled to defend this hotel after arriving there during the peak of the, much wrote about, virus or bacterial bug.
We arrived on 14 August to a pretty quiet reception and fairly empty public spaces. We quickly discovered that hundreds of people were ill. Obviously we worried that we would catch it too.

I have to make it very clear that however this bug spread, I am certain it was not due to poor hygiene conditions or water issues.

I have never seen as much bottled water available (and we are very experienced travellers - 5 * hotels, 3 times per year). The hygiene was fantastic and I have extreme OCD, so trust me I was looking for anything I could pick holes in. There was nothing to fault.

The rooms were cleaned every morning to a very high standard, the public areas were disinfected a few times a day, the pools were very clean (I went for a walk at 8am to find lots of cleaning staff and gardeners everywhere). The restaurant was clean and food hygiene standards were followed correctly by staff.

Now I will tell you what the issue really was in that hotel (and probably others like it).
THE GUESTS!

Everywhere was spotless and there were staff everywhere working extremely hard to maintain the standards BUT as soon as the guests were around it became clear why there was a bug and why it had spread throughout.

I have never seen as many people claiming to be "ill" then appearing in the restaurant areas filling plates with bread and fruit, with BARE HANDS. There were grabbers provided for absolutely every piece of food you could require but for some reason people love to pick it up, finger it then put it back and choose another. All the while spreading whatever bacteria is on their hands to others.
I cannot count how many times I tapped on somebodies shoulder to request that they leave the food alone and use the grabbers, to be met with blank faces.
The pool areas were lovely until people arrived and left plates piled high with fruit and food (that they had no intention of eating) all over the floors. Drinks cups were everywhere, with even the lifeguard constantly putting rubbish in the bin. Is that his job ? NO!
I have never seen as many 'animals' in one place. The only hygiene issue was concerning the guests who stayed in the hotel in August.
I cannot say if it was one particular nationality or not, but I can say that the British are much cleaner, thoughtful and respectful to others than other europeans.
Europe lead the way in some areas BUT unfortunately not basic manners, hygiene or courtesy.

Please do not let the bad reviews affect your decision to book, as I think many people will have a tainted view now based on their illnesses (which I imagine would absolutely ruin the holiday), but if they were well enough and had seen everything that we did first hand, they may realise that the guests were to blame with their disgusting ways.

How can any hotel contain or control the actions of over a thousand guests? It is impossible.
The management were outside the restaurants taking temperatures and asking people to stay in their room if they were ill, but people were bypassing them and the hand gels to enter the restaurant anyway. How on earth can they be expected to stop this, short of locking people in rooms?

The staff were fantastic and work tirelessly for you. Semis and Aliona in the restaurant are fantastic, they are so kind and humble. They cannot do enough for you, always cleaning and checking everything was ok. They work great together - a good team (thanks guys, the small things mean a lot).
Maria - guest relations, was one of the nicest most helpful people I have ever met. She works really hard to please and was so thoughtful and welcoming. It stands out when they take time to say hello as the attitude of some of the restaurant managers was poor. They were quite aloof and did not appear to do much apart from bully the staff.

The lifeguards at the water slide pool were amazing, again really made time to get to know the kids and looked out for them. Like I say small things count and make the difference.

We had a fabulous time, we did not get ill and we did ensure hand hygiene as best we could, so maybe this helped a little (or maybe it was luck).

The AI is the best we've ever had, with cocktails and champagne etc included. The beer and spirits were great quality and they even do kids cocktails which were amazing.
The rooms were fine, yes there are ants and lizards and bugs but for gods sake you are going to Rhodes what else do you expect?? I can't stand ants and insects but I book Greece knowing full well that is what I will be getting. Honestly, people do need to be realistic when slating hotels for certain things.
The sea views are amazing and the mountain view to one side is also lovely, I know what I'd rather wake up to (Rhodes ....... St Helens ??? Hmmmmm tough one).

The beach is stony, but really, is this an issue? No, buy some beach shoes from Aldi for £3 and get on with it. The fish were huge and colourful - great snorkelling for kids.
The evening boat to Lindos and back is fabulous and cheap.

PLEASE do not let the other reviews prevent you from booking. It really is lovely and on the positive side - if the hotel was lacking is certain areas they will certainly rectify that now given the bad press they've had. (We saw inspectors everywhere on one day).

To summarise, lovely location, great facilities, something for everyone, great views, amazing staff (managers not so good), great food / drink choice, clean, welcoming and high standard.

Room Tip: Rooms 3000 onwards have better views, quieter at night with kids, near to waterpark and the private...

We had a 1 week family with 2 kids all inclusive stay. Al together a nice hotel but really far from the five star level. Only flowers and gardens and sport facilities are close to 5 star. For the rest is less than four.Especially for services, restaurants and drinks.
Beach - not bad but filed with stones (think about proper shoes) Note that the privately owned water sport facility is with really nice people. No real scuba makes sense as the sea is pretty empty.
Pools - during our stay pools were nice and clean. Aqua park was nice and also one of the lifeguards. As we had rooms close to the beach and the hotel is really big the aqua park was far.
Restaurants - as was mid august and hotel full was sometime hard to pick a table. Food OK, nothing special tough.
Bars - the bar close to reception was nice. The bar close to the sea was very nice just one of the girls serving there had yoghurt almost every day and was sometime ruining our evenings.
Animation - all of them really nice team and the on - Only problem in the evenings at the amphitheater was hard to stay with small kids. Also stairs are pretty dangerous for kids.

That's all. No major problems but also no special fun.

This was our first time all inclusive and we were very pleased with our stay at this hotel. The staff were always friendly and helpful, the animation team worked extremely hard despite the blistering heat, the rooms were very spacious and comfortable and always spotless! It was my sons birthday during our stay and the maids must have noticed his birthday cards as when we returned to our room later that day they had put a birthday cake in our fridge for him!! All in all we had a fabulous stay, really enjoyed our time there and would not hesitate to recommend it.

Our travel dates : started Monday 11th August 2014; departed (thankfully !) : Monday 25th August 2014

(due to flight delays and coach transfer delays we actually arrived at the hotel on Tuesday 12th august at around 2am).

Travel Company : JET2HOLIDAYS

Well where do i start ? WE (myself, my wife, and our 11 year old daughter) arrived for what we were hoping would be a fantastic 14 night all inclusive luxury holiday in Rhodes. Our trip from airport to Lindos Imperial (JET2Holidays stated this would take around 1hr 20 mins max) took nearly 3 hours !

Upon arrival the manager on the check in desk told us 'due to a water problem we didn't have a room to check in to , this was now around 2.30am and it had already been a very long day, especially for our 11 year old. We were told it was a 5 minute journey by hotel taxi to another very nice hotel.

We later discovered that this 'water problem' was a lie and the real reason we didn't have a room was due to a complicated mess involving both overbooking and other holiday makers travel company's going bankrupt leaving people
stranded at the hotel.

The hotel driver, a pleasant enough fellow, first went like a bat out of hell down the road
and we ended up in the wrong place...after some checking we set off again and this time ended up in the Olive Garden (looks like a 2 or 3 star backpackers haven !). After arguing with the manager on the desk about not having our passports (Lindos Imperial kept them back) we had a mighty trek around fields, tennis courts, swimming pools, and up several flights of stairs carrying our heavy suitcases. We were given three disgusting sweaty cheese and some unknown meat sandwiches and 3 bottles of water. The disgusting sarnies
went in the bin, even though we were by now ravenous !

Next morning after several delays we were whisked back to the Lindos Imperial ...only to be told we had to wait until after 2pm for our room to be vacated and cleaned (it was actually after 3pm when we finally got in our room). The room was not clean, dirty pillows, dirty bed linens, and it had an ant infestation to make matters worse !!

We marched straight back to reception where we demanded to see a manager ....none were around so more waiting. Reception was in total chaos by now with lots of holidaymakers shouting at various holiday reps and hotel staff in many different languages.
Eventually we got hold of a different manager who explained it wasn't a water issue at all but that some Russian travel company had gone bankrupt and the people would not vacate there rooms. It later transpired that quite a lot of overbooking had also taken place.

We demanded a new room and to be fair after a night living with ants we got one, a nice room with a private pool. Aha bliss at last we thought !! But no...on going down to reception we spotted several children and adults projectile vomiting on stairs and in corridors. At which
point a manager told us 'sorry sir, but its airborne !!'. This was the start of the dreaded virus. During our stay on day 4 - day 8 we all got ill with horrendous vomiting and diarrhoea and had to have two hotel doctors round to administer antibiotics, electrolytes etc.

All we could keep down for the next few days was water and some plain biscuits. When we started to feel better we went to the main hotel shop to buy our own bottled water. In the main shop somebody had defecated on the floor and run off....
another victim of the dreaded 'virus'.

On our first week the hotel refused to supply any bottled water, they issued water from taps into small plastic cups, saying that it was filtered ! I have never seen this before at a 5 star all inclusive hotel ! On our second week the hotel did start to issue bottled water, even though it was usually at 30 odd degrees C as for some inexplicable reason this 5 star hotel didn't
have any fridges for it !

The maids must have looked scary to new arrivals as they were dressed in face masks, gloves and boots by about day 5 of our stay !

The hotel food was of terrible quality with little variety and dubious hygiene (no temperature sensors, metal lids left open outside for flies and birds to get easy access to food, no hand sanitisers available at all in our first week). We dare not experiment to much as the virus or bug had a bad habit of re-appearing and rendering us back to project vomit and diarrhoea state. So for our second week as soon as we were able at our own expense we took a taxi
to Pefkos (about a 30 euro round trip fare) and ate at some very nice restaurants, although still very cautiously always carrying our
own bottle of hand sanitising gel bottles.

The only saving grace were the water slides in the activity pool, which we could not use for week 1. The 'entertainment', which we missed altogether
on week 1, was total rubbish, with nothing at all for adults. We never got to see the kids club either.

So to sum up we spent probably in total £4,500 on a 14 night Rhodes to Hell Holiday, we hardly used any of the all inclusive food or drink we had paid for, the hotel bar was like a British Rail waiting room or cafe...not even a TV on !! No atmosphere at all and Very SAD !!

The JET2 Holiday reps were not very helpful...one resigned after day 2 and her replacement came in for an hour or two on day 3 and then she claimed to be ill and we never saw here again ! The only offer made to us was to move across the island to a business hotel
which wasn't all inclusive and had no facilities for children, we declined this offer as by now we were starting to feel like the worst had to be over ! Little did we realise the worst was yet to come ! All other 4 and 5 star all inclusive hotels were fully booked according to our rep
anyway for our entire stay.

I am still not feeling better after a week off work, and neither is
my wife ..its goingt o take a while to fully recover from this horrible holiday and its after effects !

Room Tip: "Newer rooms with private pools are ok"

We spent 2 weeks at the Lindos Imperial in June with our two girls aged 6 & 8. Our experience was 100% positive. We had upgraded our room to a private pool room and found this ideal for our needs. Two large areas for sleeping separated by a very well appointed bathroom and plenty of wardrobe space. Air con fab.

We found the staff to be almost without exception extremely helpful and very courteous. Our girls spent almoat every afternoon in the hotel run kids club despite them being the only English children. Kids find friends no matter what. The animation team were amazing! So hardworking and friendly, we felt our kids were very well looked after. Maria, the main restaurant hostess was also extremely friendly and deserves a special mention.

We ate at the main buffet, the Italien and the Greek restaurant and found the food of good quality and always hot. We felt the variety was fine and always found something we wanted to eat. Our kids ate well too although the kids buffet was limited. Beer , wine and cocktails were great and perfectly drinkable.

The hotel is a little isolated but there is a local supermarket within walking distance on the way to Glystra Beach. There are more shops in the other direction a little further away. Take the land train to get your bearings. A torch needed though is you plan to walk in the evening. Lindos is easily accessible either by bus or by boat direct from the beach.

All in all we had a wonderful holiday and would return as it ticked all the boxes for a relaxing family holiday in the sun.

We went on holiday here during August and must say we were very impressed with all the facilities here which cater for all ages and food choices, We were hit by the virus like most others at this time but carried on making the most of our holiday, The staff were very helpful through this time. You need to visit the pool bar where Marios and Vitalia really look after you and Marios will sort you out the best cocktail in the complex. The cleanliness was very good throughout our stay with daily room cleaning.
