Firstly I must point out that this hotel is allocated to the wrong town. It is technically in Hippach-Schwendau, but in the Hippach township rather than the smaller Schwendau village and so should be included with the other Hippach hotels. The hotels next door and across the road are correctly reviewed in the Hippach section. I have pointed this out to TripAdvisor, but they have done nothing!
I wish the star system allowed one to give 4½ stars as this hotel almost deserved the fifth star. It is situated in the beautiful Zillertal valley just before the bustling tourist town of Mayrhofen. Views up the valley to the high peaks are stunning. The hotel has a two storey car park across the road underneath the pool and gardens which you also have to cross the (very quiet) road to get to. The main entrance is up a flight of steps which could be tricky with cases, but if you enter via the restaurant terrace it's level. We had been delayed by a motorway accident and had rung ahead so we had no problem checking in and getting down to the restaurant for our evening meal.
Our room was a good size with very smart furnishings and a good shower room attached. We had booked the hotel on the recommendation of friends who suggested we ask for a room with a mountain view. We booked a Rose room, but in an exchange of emails were promised a VIP room with a balcony overlooking the mountains. Our room had two windows and a balcony door. One window did have a view up the valley, but you had to stand at the window to see it. The other window and door opened onto the balcony which was on the side of the hotel and looked over the fairly close adjacent apartment block and some fields rising up to the side. There were chairs on the balcony, but without a good view these weren't very inviting. A small thing, but a disappointment after what we were promised. Otherwise we could not fault the accommodation which had a very comfortable bed, great wardrobe space, flat screen TV, free WiFi and a well stocked and spotless shower room.
The public spaces in the hotel were beautiful using a modern take on traditional materials with everything very tasteful. In the evenings an abundance of candles lit the stairs and landings. Our package included breakfast, a snack at lunchtime and a table d'hôte dinner. Breakfast was excellent and as the weather was nice we opted to eat on the terrace. The evening meal menus were well put together and although choices were not extensive, they were of a uniformly high quality. The suggested wines to accompany each course were also very good. Our only complaint is that the service from the lovely staff could be a little erratic. A couple of items were forgotten and one evening, when we were the last people on the terrace, we asked for a ten minute break between main course and dessert. It was nearly forty minutes before anyone came out to the terrace again and it was obvious they had forgotten we were there!
The Ziller valley is a stunning part of Austria with excellent scenery and walks in the summer and, I am assured, great winter sports. The Hotel Alpenblick is a lovely hotel from which to enjoy the area. Despite the couple of gripes I mentioned (which just stopped me giving it a fifth star) I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone visiting this area. Just don't look for it in Schwendau village!
