“pure relaxation”
Reviewed 30 September 2013

We are a young couple, that were looking for a quiet vacation without the kids. and we got it!!
A beautiful resort, everything was very meticulous: the gardens, the facilities, the service. we almost felt we are in Europe, probably because it's German influence.
The guests were mostly from Germany and over their 60's. Since we came to relax we didn't bother, It was wonderful.
Amazing how polite and quite all guests and staff were. The resort was fully booked, over 1000 people, and we didn't feel it at all.
The staff, entertainment, sport guides, the first language is Deutsche and than English.
I was a bit disappointed that they had a night show, a musical in Deutsche. The next show was in English but after a few days, after our check out.
Anyways we went to Kos town instead, which was nice. I don't know how it is by day but at night was very romantic. a mixture of Europe and middle east. A lovely harbor and nice allies with little shops to walk around.

The food in the main restaurant in hotel was very varied, but not so tasty. Especially dinner. I have little experience with 5 star hotels. but the food didn't match the high standards of the other things in this hotel or any hotel.

The room was great! big, clean, fun bad, balcony with lovely view. super.
Unfortunately, there was a door in the wall, connecting someone's else room. and we could hear everything. and when I say everything, I mean everything! which was disgusting.
It bothered me, but was too lazy to complain, we came for 3 nights, and barely stayed in the room.

Room Tip: check if there is a door between your room to your neighbor guest. You can hear the other side tough...

We had visited the hotel many years ago and we returned to it looking for a place that would have fulfilled everyone's wishes. Or quite...
The adults appreciated the fact that the hotel was spotlessly clean and well-maintained, had wonderful gardens, generous spaces, "access" to a beautiful beach and a wonderful sunset view. The food was just great, mainly Greek! The service was friendly, efficient, and professional. Of course, all this has a price and the price was very expensive.
But the hotel was rather isolated. The closest village, Mastichari, was more than 5Km away and the city of Kos more than 20Km away. There was a public bus that you could eventually use if you were prepared to walk for +/-15 minutes to reach the bus stop after having crossed the main road! I never got to the first bus but I always had a seat on the second one. I would strongly recommend renting a car. The beautiful island of Kos is definitely worth the visit and starting from Neptune the car is the only conceivable means of transport (too lazy to go around biking).
There was a nautical club that offered courses every day (windsurfing, canoe, catamaran,…) against payment. If you could afford paying, you had, at least, found an activity for you or your children. Because there was not much going on in any time of the day (or night). There were some sports activities but after trying one or two I gave up. The evening entertainment was just enough for the kids but for us it was just endlessly boring.
Overall, the hotel is still nice even though it used to be better. They will have to invest more in their international clientele if they would like to keep everyone happy (admittedly the majority of the clients were Germans or German-speaking which justifies why most activities were in German, but there were, nevertheless, British, French, Italians, …, around that felt lost). Also, they need to be more inventive with their entertainment programme. Playback musicals is not for everybody's taste even if they change regularly!

Room Tip: Room with a view! Sunsets are so wonderful to be missed!

First the good points: its spotlessly clean; the vista is beautiful; the food is great and everything works like clockwork ...as you would expect for a resort that costs £650 a night for a family of 5 half board.

The problem is that this is no place for an English Family with young children (three boys 12 and under) to spend an enjoyable holiday. The main issues are these :

1. The extras: When you visit a 5 star resort that costs a small fortune, you don't expect to pay extra for absolutely everything. Lets take Water for an example. Greece in August is hot, water is essential. The cost of the hotel supplying bottled water to us for the week would have been negligible (compared to the price of the holiday and our goodwill). Instead we had to buy Water at every opportunity: at either a supermarket or from the bar. That included having to buy Water at dinner. I expect to pay extras for any soft or alcoholic drinks but to pay extra for Water was just a step too far in a resort costing £650 a day. Water was supplied at breakfast, but the glasses available to use were tiny, two gulps and you were done. Then there was staying in the room past 12pm on day of departure: that of course was possible.... at the cost of 50 euros for 6 hours and 80 euros for 8 hours. There was no justification for making those charges, just that it was hotel policy. The final insult was trying to charge us the price of the buffet dinner on the day of departure (32E for adults, 16E for children) , which is not included: never mind the fact that the buffet caters for more than 1000 people every night, with indolent levels of wastage. I could go on, but be prepared to pay every step of the way for everything.

2. This is a German resort, run by Germans for Germans. I say that not to heap insults or stereotypes on the Germanic nation, but clearly before booking this hotel you should be aware that there are some significant cultural differences to many other Western European Resorts. The place is strangely quiet : my three noisy children were told off for horsing about in the pool; moving the sunbeds (from the rigorously enforced rule that there must be 2 beds per brolly or else !!). There were in fact comparatively very few pre teens/ toddlers anywhere. There were a lot of teenagers, but these were very quiet, well behaved and generally atypical to the teenagers I am used to hanging around. The only nightime activities for the kids or us were the musical shows (well done but essentially miming pre recorded music); a sedate piano bar (kids not allowed); and the main hotel bar (which has a large chess board if your kids are bored to tears by this stage). The best fun was to be had in one of the two tavernas just outside the resort at the top of the road. There was a hotel disco somewhere but it was only open on one of the 7 nights we were there.

My final experience of the hotel was the maître De at the restaurant telling me that he was only "acting under orders" when trying to make me pay for dinner on the last night. That was an unfortunate turn of phrase, but probably indicative of a resort that did not really understand me and my noisy kids and probably did not want us there in the first place.

Shame: its got a lovely beach !

We spent one week as a couple (this is important, see below) at the Neptune Hotels - Resort, Convention Centre & Spa.

Pros:
- The hotel area is quite big so you will not feel the lack of space most of the time (for exceptions, see below);
- The staff is very nice and friendly. Always smiling and wishing to help you. Same goes for cleaning ladies;
- Cleanliness of the various areas: rooms, dining rooms, pools, beach, etc.;
- Nice and quiet location (not directly along the road or next to some bars);
- You can rent cars/motorcycles via the hotel and the company is located just a few meters in front of the hotel. It is not expensive and they are professional;
- Activities are organized on a regular basis at sea (sailing, windsurf) but we did not try it thus I cannot tell if it’s free or not;
- There are two beaches: one “small” just along the water and another one, larger.

Cons:
- The amenities are not tailored for so big a resort. Expect some fights for sunbeds and/or sun umbrellas (and be brave, the Germans wake up when the sun rises to reserve some! [even if they are not allowed to do it]), running machines in the fitness center (if you stay more than thirty-one minutes, they will not hesitate to report you to the fitness guy) or table tennis!;
- It’s all about Germans! First of all, I would like to say that I have nothing against them. It is just that when I book some holidays, I expect a change of scene and trying new things, living new experiences… Well, forget about that. Simple example: milk for breakfast is from… Germany. Most of the activities are in German and everything written is translated into English and German. If you are staying with children who cannot speak English, this might not be the best place to stay;
- I think the rooms need a little refurbishing. We cannot say that it is old but still. Some changes to be made. We had a room with two bathrooms and, in “mine”, the doors of the douche were not fixed anymore and were holding only by a few screws. Moreover, we booked a suite and we a bit surprised to see that we had twin beds and not a queen or king bed. This was really unpleasant;
- You have to pay for some activities (yoga, pilates, etc.) or for enjoying the sauna area;
- The Spa is really beautiful and people are professional but don’t expect the price to be less expensive than in France or Germany. Exact same prices. I find it a bit exaggerated…;
- The food is not worth the price. That goes for the buffet or the other restaurants (Taverna, Osteria, Proteas). By the way, regarding the latest, don’t fall for their “get a 50% off the bill if you are in half-board” because they just raised all the prices.
Regarding the buffet, improvements could be easily done: less salt, less sugar, less gravy in all dishes. The food was not terrible but not great either;
- And last but not least: most of the clients are families with young children. Depending on your luck, you will find the pool area nice and quiet OR noisy and very unpleasant.

In general, I would say that the hotel is not bad but it is not for young couples. It is perfect for families, though.

We just came back from a week we spent at Neptune hotel. We travelled with our 3 years old son. We had a fantastic time, the hotel really deserves its top rating. It is a perfect resort for families, but not only. Plenty of activities that can be enjoyed, from sports (very good sailing possibilities and weather conditions) to evening animation with good quality. Food is really excellent, very good variation, plenty of traditional greek dishes available. Mostly good service, nevertheless some of the waiters are often very stressed due to the high workload and the high number of tables they need to serve. In fact, if there is one thing to be pointed out as improvement area, this is to receive a smile from the restaurant personnel (main restaurant). Very nice and clean sand beach. Very clean and spacy rooms. Overall extremely positive experience, we came back from holidays with more positive energy than when we left!
