We stayed for 5 nights while visiting the area and mostly enjoyed ourselves -- we should have attended karaoke night rather than trying to sleep through it. We needed to be in Atenas, and there are not a lot of options actually close to town. We were on a hurried trip and arrived stressed out and on a treadmill agenda, so we were not exactly tuned into laid back on our arrival. However, we had the good sense to put our bags in the room and go into the bar that is part of the outdoor dining area for a drink as soon as we arrived where we enjoyed a cold beer and took the stress down a notch. The restaurant and bar are on top of the hill with a bit of a breeze and only a couple of other patrons were there. We had dinner on the plane, but I was hungry and ordered a shrimp cocktail, which was probably 8 large fresh boiled shrimp that were very tasty. It was a good start.

The rooms are two to a building spread around the grounds. I guess we had one of the larger "cabins," which faced out into the pool area. The grounds are very lush and their is a sense of privacy about the place. The room was large with a "king bed" that was actually two twins side by side, which was fine. There was a large sliding door and glass wall that served as the entry and looked out to the pool, but with a large window to the side of the room and a window in the kitchenette area and in the bathroom. The major windows had dark maroon curtains that did a good job of filtering the morning light. There is no AC, but there is a ceiling fan over the bed that was helpful for our stay during the rainy season, where the humidity can be high. Walk in shower worked well. We did not use the kitchenette, which included a small refrigerator and a two-burner electric hot plate, but there were pans and dishes if we had wanted to make something in the room.

Our first day in Atenas was an "off day" for us, so we strolled in for breakfast around 9 and had the place to ourselves. We were in Costa Rica in the off season, and there were only two other couples staying at the hotel. Breakfast was made to order with a nice large plate of fresh fruit and orange juice, a plate of scrambled eggs with rice and beans, and warm bread that was not quite toast. This was breakfast every day, so it would have been nice to have a bit of variety, but it was good and everything was freshly prepared, so the lack of variety is a quibble. My wife was off to the pool after breakfast, which she had to herself, so she skimmed it to remove the bugs while getting some sun. The pool is a nice size for swimming, about 4 feet over most of the area. I was wrapping up some things at work and took advantage of the wireless internet, which worked quite well while we were there (internet that works can be rare in rural areas, and we were told only rooms 1-4 have internet). We swam again a couple of days later, and I found the water just about a perfect temperature for cooling off and getting a bit of exercise, too.

We had lunch at the restaurant our first day there, and it was very good. My wife had the salad with ahi tuna, which included a beautiful piece of tuna on top of her salad. She liked it very much. I had the special, which was meatloaf that was done in a very unusual way with a vegetable sauce. It was good. The restaurant has a very diverse menu with many choices that include salads, sandwiches, pastas, and full meals. We only had the one meal at the restaurant other than our breakfasts -- our fault, but we were surprised they were closed on Monday -- and it was good and moderately priced.

We came back to the hotel Monday midday to swim and were expecting to have dinner, only to discover the restaurant was closed. And the taxis were on strike. This turned out to be a lucky break, because we were forced to walk into Atenas, which seemed like a long way until we did it. About 20 minutes, and it was nice to see the town at foot speed instead of speeding by in a taxi. We found a very nice outdoor restaurant along the highway just the other side of town -- Atenas is all of 6 square blocks -- and had a great evening as their only customers. The owner knew of a gypsy cab who came and picked us up and took us back to the hotel at the end of the evening.

I think Saturday night was karaoke night. The hotel staff had let us know this in advance and encouraged us to attend. We were tired when we got back and feeling less than social, so we decided to turn in early. We really should have embraced the opportunity to mix with the locals and have a bit of fun, as I am sure alcohol would have made the music much better along with the sleeping afterwards. It was definitely loud, and with the open and screened windows at ceiling level, there was no way to turn down the volume inside the room. I am sure it was the only night that week where the bar was packed, and we should have gone with the opportunity rather than tried to avoid it. It was certainly the only exciting thing that happened all week.

This is a very good, basic resort. It is not really a B&B, but it is also not a hotel. It is a pretty good place to do nothing for a couple of days, and with an internet connection you can get a newspaper to read while sitting in the shade and enjoying your morning coffee. We have to go to Atenas 3-4 times a year, and we will definitely stay again.

Room Tip: Rooms 1-4 have wireless internet. You can get internet in the restaurant where you can sit all day a...

I stayed at Colinas del Sol for a month while volunteering in the area. The hotel is under new management since 1 May 2011 and Brigitte and her team provide a very friendly and personal service while working to catch up on maintenance and improve many elements of the hotel that had been left by the previous management eg the towels and linens though perfectly adequate and clean, are older than you would necessarily expect and perhaps should have been renewed a little while ago.
You are not going to get 5 star facilities for th price you pay here. I booked a room with kitchenette and this had a small cooking are with 2 electric rings, a coffee maker, and a large fridge freezer (great for someone on an extended stay) . The room was not too far from reception, and there are less expensive rooms without these facilities up the hill. The room is spacious and I had a double and a single bed in the room and there still was plenty of room. Cabin 9 where I was has a smaller bathroom than the other cabins near reception which was manageable for 1 person but not that comfortable.
The grounds are lovely and the hotel has a great swimming pool.
The restaurant has a good menu and the prices are not "soda" prices but are fair for the quality of food that you get. Again it seems that Brigitte and Glen (the chef) are looking to make this a good restaurant that can attract local cliental and not o ly be a hotel restaurant.
I really enjoyed staying here. Brigitte, her husband Juan and her team care about the hotel and are all working to make this a go to hotel and restaurant in Atenas. All are welcome, families, solo travellers couples, business people and the free wifi that is available in the restaurant/bar area as well as rooms around the pool (I understand to be extended further in the grounds) means that you can stay in touch with people overseas.
I would happily return to this location where you checking as a guest and leave as part of the family.

We stayed for 3 weeks in Jan as part of an excellent tour. Hotel is basic, but clean, staff very friendly and helpful. The grounds are nice and it is nice and cool at night. Restaurant is fairly good with good prices. Taxi to Atenas is only $2 US

My partner and I stayed in Colinas del Sol on a trip to see the beautiful area surrounding Atenas, Costa Rica. The hotel is beautifully situated amongst lush gardens with a large swimming pool. The larger rooms near the pool are nice looking even though we didn`t see them from the interior. We stayed in one of the smaller rooms on a hill overlooking the property. They were just a small step above bare bulb with a bedside table light that was broken and could not be turned off without unscrewing the bulb and a washroom mirror light which could not be turned on without plugging it in. When we asked the room attendants for a couple of extra pillows they flat out said no. It was only a sweet staff person, Nancy that intervened and took pillows from the room that was being cleaned. There was also a soap dispenser that was next to the sink and not close to the shower but that was the only soap that was in the room. When we asked the manager for a bar of soap she said that they had no other soap. We told her that it was quite inconvenient to get out of the shower to get the soap she said she couldn`t help us.
Another very upsetting aspect of our stay was the attitude and behaviour of the manager. We ate at their restaurant and were the only two people who were not part of a large group that filled the entire restaurant. We were offered the buffet that the group was eating. When dessert was served to the group we asked the manager if desert was included in the buffet and she barked at us: "DESSERT IS NOT INCLUDED FOR YOU." Not only was it rude but it was embarassing. A few of the groups members obviously overheard her which was totally unacceptable. She treated us with indifference and was not the least bit accommodating.
The next day we were told that there would be a 13% surcharge for using our credit card. We are seasoned travellers who live in Latin America and are not used to this sort of unprofessional behaviour. I would say though that normally Costa Rica is a country that prides itself on good service but not in this instance.

My husband and I first stayed at this hotel a few years ago. At that time we stayed in a regular type hotel room that had a mini-fridge, toaster and coffee maker. This time we are staying in a 2 bedroom housed located on the same property. We will be here for November and December and would have liked to stay longer, however it is already booked from Jan. to Mar. 2011.

One of the things we like best about this place is that it is walking distance to the town of Atenas. We also love the views.

This hotel also has efficiency apartments that include a small kitchenette. Basically, there are all types of accommodations. The owner, Jurgen is very nice and speaks English. His staff are also very friendly and also speak English.

I suggest you bring ear plugs since there are nights when dogs in the area never seem to stop barking. This is very common in Costa Rica also so don't let this stop you from staying here.

We are very impressed with how quickly things are fixed considering things usually move very slowly in Costa Rica. When we told the staff that our washing machine wasn't working, they had someone come the same day to take a look at it and it was fixed within 24 hours. We asked for a hammock and they put up two of them. We asked for a few items for our kitchen and got them within a couple of days, including a muffin tin so I could bake muffins. The service is amazing!
