Where else can you sit having a pre-dinner drink when a herd of 15 elephants stroll by, warthogs graze on the lawns and the hippos come out of the river at dusk to nibble to grass on the side of the river bank? We thought the Zambezi River Lodge was an excellent venue for exploring the area. Our room and bathroom were clean and well decorated, the beds comfortable, and the breakfasts and evening buffet were excellent. The evening entertainment was traditional and enjoyable.

With hindsight we should have stayed another night, instead of moving on and would highly recommend the hotel.

The room we had, in a chalet along the river, was functional and slightly dull but comfortable enough- the mattress was excellent. You wouldn't know you were in Africa from the decor. The bathroom however was a little dirty on arrival- we think workmen pruning some nearby trees may have been using it! The best thing about the hotel was its bar- overlooking the Zambezi and possessed of a wonderful terrace where you can watch the sunset, glass in hand, and then later watch hippos munching on the grass just metres from the bar- a very special experience.

Dinner was pretty decent too- the chicken cordon bleu was tasty. Breakfast was also pretty decent.

I stayed both at the lodge (twice) and the campsite (once) on my way to Victoria Falls in Zambia. Just a perfect stop-over place for the night. Clean, neat and near nature, right on the banks of the Zambezi River. Believe it or not, there were signs posted by the side walk "Beware of crocodiles!" meaning: stay away at the safe distance. Yet these rarely come up the banks. Lodge is surrounded by beautiful trees and greenery and a sight of a peaceful river passing by compliments your glass of wine on a quiet evening under the skies. In the morning bird-watching at its best!

What a beautiful location and the standard of accommodation was first class. That said, there is something for every one, from low budget to reasonably priced plush rooms.

One thing I would like to know, is there a consession for South African, Rhodesians etc? Some companies quite rightly charge less for local people, which I think fair as quite a difference between Southern African remunerations compared to clients from the west.

I would highly recommend this great place!

we were there for dinner and got nothing else than a normal quality one. most of the meals were not available at this time. our choice was even difficult to modify. the staff was not able to argue comprehensible why something is not available or possible. apart from the dinner, the staff was not able to organize a taxi before 22h...
nothing to add.

We've recently stayed on the campsite here twice on our way in and out of Zambia, it's very convenient for the border crossing.
The ablutions were ok - nothing special, the campsite location is fabulous on the banks of the Zambezi with hippos, crocs and birdlife aplenty.
The swimming pool was a disappointment - it hadn't been maintained and the water had a scum on it (including a dead toad).
The restaurant was a joke - the buffet looked great (losts of hot stainless cauldrons), but on opening them up the choice turned out to be cottage pie, chicken stew, mash, rice, cabbage - and that was it. The quality was like school dinners, the service minimal - all for $N165 each! Not good value.
The registration and payment processes were extraordinarily slow with staff seemingly using steam-driven computers and having to enter too much data (?)

N$85 pppn camping with clean toilets and hot showers. Use of all hotel facilities including the pool. The spot is right on the river although the pitch is not particularly level there are level places to be found. All pitches have RSA sockets for power hookup and a light, table and Braai. Reception was a bit longwinded as they treat you like you're staying in the hotel but thats not a problem.

There was some noise (music) from the other side of the river and this continued almost all night. It did not really disturb me but it bit disrupt my wifes sleep slightly. The guard on duty introduced himself early on.

3G access on MTC was patchy but we did get GPRS Edge quite easily.
