“Amazing Deal”
Reviewed 18 June 2014

We spent a week here in May, 2014. This resort needs to evaluated through the lens of what it cost to stay here for a week. We paid 1/5 the cost of our previous week in a lovely spot in Sorrento. We saw no packs of dogs, or youths, or garbage. Yes, there were areas where the grass hadn't been cut and weeds were growing. These areas were being cut during the week we were there. Our apartment was clean. We e-mailed ahead and told them we were three single women, when we arrived we had a one bed room unit with three single beds in it as well as a day bed in the living room. We told them our arrival time and were picked up by the shuttle bus at the train station. We were told before we came to the area that it was primarily an area where Italians go to holiday, not a non-Italian tourist area. We thought it was a bonus to go to somewhere that was "off the beaten path". One of the three people we dealt with at the front desk spoke reasonably good English. The other two people had very limited English, but at all times were courteous and helpful. There is a young man named Ricardo in the rather good restaurant on site who speaks English quite well, perhaps he should be moved to the front desk. The worst part about the week was other English speaking guests who complained incessantly about everything. I was embarrassed by them and for them. By all means stay at I Giardini di Atena, and enjoy the beauty of the area, the wonderful people and above all the food!

This place has been the worst place I have ever stay at in Italy. Garbage everywhere, weeds all over the place. People who do the cleaning are very rude. They charge 60 euros for maintenance that is in addition to what has been paid to interval world. I hope interval takes this place out of the places to stay in. Is not worth the amount they charge I Am submitting a few pictures to interval.

Gentilissimi,
Cordiali saluti

We arrived early Saturday evening to find that there was no shop on site as promised in the literature, without a car it was impossible to get anything anywhere. The packs of dogs roaming around were quite offputting, but not as bad as the youths gathering all around the place. The apartment was to say the least sparse. There were no cleaning materials left for our use, nor were ther any means of lighting the hob, even if we had brought food. The living area is laughable, one easy chair in an area meant for 4. The Patio furniture was decrepit..The outlook poor, overlooking other butlins type chalets . In fact most of the chalets seemed to be in permanant occupation and we were informed that they are used by peopele who are "between" homes. The Bistor opened and closed as the whim took it. The restaurant was never open and the bar though usable was mainly empty. The swimminh pools were shut as was the thetare and the promised entertainment never once happenned.

On the positive side the staff were top notch even though they could not help, the free shuttle bus to Lecce was exactly what we carless people needed. Generally the area was clean and tidy.

Room Tip: If you do not have a car, forget it! If you want to relax on site, forget it!

Dear Sir,
in thanking you for the time you spent in writing about your experience, I must not anyway forget that your complains are based on a wrong reality of our Resort, for the reason as follows:

- First of all you perfectly kwew that in April our opened- swimming pools are still closed, for they open from juny to september; then the Bistrot delle Rose was opened almost every evening, not in the morning and the well. furnished Morvans Bar inside the Resort is opened the whole day;
- our Staff is always at disposal for every needs of our guest, above of regarding the furnishments of our flats and we did not receive any complains from you during your stay..

I'm really sorry of this disappointment of yours, but this thougt in not based on our reality in the Resort, that lot's of guests on the contrary use to appreciate very much..
Best Regards
the Management

I come from Canada and I went to "Bistrot delle rose", after buying a coupon on Groupon, with some friends of mine. It has been an amazing choice: very nice place, very small price comparing to the quantity of food we ate...and above all...pizza was so delicious!! I think I'll go back again as soon as I can!!

We stayed here in May / June 2013. The resort is outside of Merine, a smallish town on the outskirts of Lecce. There really is nothing to Merine, except a couple of bars in the town / village center.
The resort looks like a 1970's collection of Butlins apartments. This sounds worse than it actually is. There are lots of apartments in rows with a small mini market, a church, a hairdressers, a spa, a medical center, a fitness center (we didn't visit so can't comment), a bar (really a large room with tables outside. The good thing is that if you order a drink they give you a standard bowl with olives, peanuts and cracked corn. After several drinks you don't want to go out for a meal!!
Be aware that the resort does not open properly until 1st June. The pools were being cleaned / maintained so were out of use. The entertainment team were going through auditions etc so provided no entertainment. However this meant the place was really peaceful!
The reception staff are really helpful but not all speak good English. There is one computer in the reception area where you can access the internet for free - a nice touch.
The apartments are either studios (I think) which appeared to be on the ground floor and 1 bedroomed on the upper floor. The one we stayed in was basic to say the least. However it did have air con in both the sitting room and bedroom. They don't expect people to cook (we did) and therefore there are no knives for cutting vegetables, meat, bread etc. There is a four ring gas hob. Also the kitchen has a good sized fridge freezer. The unit we were in had sky tv but none of the channels were in English- we didn't go to watch tv though so it wasn't a problem. The 1 bedroom upstairs apartments have a double width balcony which is really nice. These overlook the road between rows of apartments (not that nice) or the green space between the rows of apartments (better view but nothing special).
The apartment we were in had two armchairs and two single beds in the sitting room. Thus 4 people were easily contained in the apartment. The bathroom was well equipped and spacious.
It seems that we were in an area where people / couples lived full time. This made for noise early on when they went to work.
Would I stay here again - definitely. The positioning is ideal for the town of Lecce (beautiful and historic) as well as easy and quick access to a most beautiful coastline. Having been to the Caribbean on many occasions, I'd rather be on this coast than there. The views are incredible and the sea so clear. The beach bars / restaurants are excellent value for money. Look for 'Punteras' just north of San Foca and you'll enjoy a small select beach restaurant and beach with reasonably priced loungers. It is the preferred beach for the Double Tree by Hilton Acaya Golf Resort, a mile or so away where the guests are bussed to the beach daily. OK it is not as warm but in summer I doubt there would be much difference,. it was 23 - 28 degrees C most days at the end of May!
There is a wildlife reserve maintained by WWF nearby and little towns dotted around, each having their own incredible charms.
If you can go to this area do so. Not everyone speaks English but everyone is a delight.
I wish I'd had longer to stay here.

Room Tip: Ask for a 1 bedroomed apartment rather than a studio.

We arrived in the evening, were surprised at the residence feel to it as it did not feel like a resort. Guest services was interesting as she did not really speak much English, but we were able to get checked in and to our room. Please note that they require 100 euros in cash as a deposit. The grounds are very nicely laid out, easy to get around. The room was reminiscent of a dorm room, small kitchen area, one room with twin beds, a desk and cupboard, one room with a "european king," a chair, a desk and cupboard. There was a verandah off both bedrooms. There was only one small TV in the place and only one comfortable chair. There was no coffeemaker and very little in the way of kitchenware. There is no wifi of any sort, even though they say there is. The only internet is on their computer in the lobby. We were scheduled to be there a week, but only stayed for 3 days.

L Giardini d Atena was eccelente!

All the staff were very polite, though very few people spoke any English. That is to be expected. The resort was also a residence for locals to live in, which made the resort very family orientated. There is a lot of security which makes you feel safe.

The cafe makes great cappuccinas, and the staff always friendly. The food at both the restaurant and the cafe is very good, but the restaurant does not have that good of a selection. The rooms are suprisingly very spacious and have a patio. The beds in the rooms are not like the ones in North America, and are very hard.

The pool was stunning and the perfect temperature in the hot, hot heat. I would not recommend coming in July or August becuase even June is extremely hot and humid.

You do not need to rent a car because there is constant shuttling frm the resort to wherever you want in Lecce, along with pick ups from the city. This shuttle costs 20 euros per person per week though is definitely worth it.

Take the tour to Acaia which 5 euros and Acaia is a beutiful, historical town (and the tour guide we had spoke perfect English.) Included is a wonderful and delicious dinner that is in a charming, small restaurant.

This resort is definitley recommended for everyone. THere is evening entertainment (which can get quite loud). Definitely bring a portable DVD player if you only speak English and plan on watching some TV, as all the American shows that play are in Italian.

You can take the shuttle to the train station and you must go to Otranto and Gallipoli, s they are stunning seaside cities. Otranto is a safe place to shop, wonderful to swim at, and has a beautiful ancient castella.

All is provided in this resort! There is a medical centre, a beauty salon (very good), a hair salon, tennis courts, fitness centre and even aquasize in the pool at times alng with a mini club. The reception wil help you book a cab back to the airport. Christina speaks fluent English at the front desk.

L Giardini di Atena is a great place to stay!
