“So relaxing”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 October 2012

We have been to the Gite Du Calme for the past 2 years and its so relaxing! You're surrounded by vineyards and fields which is just perfect for a mid afternoon walk or a short car ride into the local town of Saintes or a bit further into Cognac. Get to them on market day and the fresh local produce is wonderful!

Julia, Rob and their daughter Daisy are lovely and so welcoming. Julia makes gorgeous meals on request (15 euros for 3 courses! Bargain!)

You can use their cycles, golf clubs, sun loungers, table tennis, trampoline, pool.....the list is endless of the activities you can do (at no extra cost) or if you're lazy like me you can just read by the pool in the sunshine :)

Planning on coming back here again next year.

Room Tip: Make sure you hire a car to get around in - just over an hour from the airport and handy for markets...

Julie and Robert have got this one dead right.
Whether you are seeking B&B (Chambres d'Houtes) or a Gite (Self Contained accommodation) Gite du Calme near Cognac is for you.
Lovely, friendly hosts, superb presentation of the rooms/Gite; fabulous grounds; a swimming pool; wonderful breakfasts and great evening meals with plenty of wine!

Room Tip: All rooms are great.

We have just returned from a fantastic week away. As previous reviewers have mentioned the hosts Rob and Julia were truly welcoming and their 7 year old daughter kept our 4 year old son entertained for hours.
The gite is incredibly spacious and beautifully furnished. There were plenty of toys for the kids and aside from the pool they loved the giant trampoline, swings and large garden to run Around in.
We will definitely return.

What a wonderful week we had at the Gite du Calme . Not only was the location quiet and beautiful but the hosts Robert and Julia made us old ones feel young again with their
good company and excellent recommendations. They made us feel almost part of the family and nothing was too much trouble for them. You just had to ask. We loved the traditional.

What a brilliant holiday. The gite is in a beautiful location, with lovely gardens and pool. We opted for bed and breakfast, which worked really well, and the meals were excellent. Our hosts were very welcoming, and the evening meals spent together were very enjoyable. Our room was newly decorated, and very light and airy, and very tastefully decorated. Can't wait to go back again, would thoroughly recommend this, to anyone. Very convenient to Cognac, Saintes and the beaches. Surrounded by vineyards and amazing views. One of the best holidays we have had!

We wanted a few days away to chill and do not very much and found the gite on the web. We stayed as B&B guests as it was off season and had a real rest. We arrived late in the afternoon but had spoken to Julia who prpepared a fantastic meal for us on our arrival and we sat around and chatted to her and Rob for most of the evening.

The next day we used the pool, slightly chilly but envigorating and stayed around lazing in the sun. The local facilities are great - you must go to the boulangerie in Dompiere but also there are markets every day and the towns of Cognac and Saintes are only 10 minutes drive away..

We like to cook and we used mainly local ingredients and were offered fruit and vegetables from Julias extensive plot. Breakfasts were a delight and included their own home made preserves.

All in all a wonderful way to relax and recharge and we have booked to return next year.

We wanted to bring in the new year in a comfortable and cozy setting in the middle of a vine yard in France and we got that and a whole lot more.

The farmhouse was large enough to hold six adults and two kids very comfortably. Needless to say, most of the time was spent sitting around the table in the large kitchen, even though the living room was as generous with space as the bedrooms. That said, the overall feeling was one of warmth mixed with stylish comfort.

As we like to cook, we took full advantage of large kitchen and were pleasantly surprised to find it stocked with all the cooking equipment we could need, including an oyster knife which was well used with the amount of local and therefore incredibly cheap oysters.

While we were renting the house, we got full use of the grounds including the swimming pool, if you are brave enough to use in it in December! However the mason work on the grounds is incredible along with the natural pool and masses of natural foliage and woodland to explore.

The 'Gite' is literally in the middle of miles of vineyards, we were able to walk down the garden path and into the fields. Visiting the local Cognac producers, picking up fresh French bread from the local bakery and shopping for dinner at open markets was a short 10 minute drive and can be found in one of the most scenic towns I've ever visited.

Overall I would say that this is one of the best 'get away from it all' holidays and locations I have ever stayed at. For a blend of luxury surroundings close to a rustic town and excellent French food and wine, then Gite du Calme is a sure thing.

  • Liked — Each bedroom was fitted out with beautiful old french furniture
  • Disliked — nothing I can think of
